In summer, visitors flock to the Dillon Reservoir to paddleboard, kayak, or simply hike around the lake. In winter, the Dillon Reservoir becomes a huge snow-kiting destination with rentals and lessons available at the lake. Dillon is one of the few towns in Summit County that offers camping close to town so it’s a great option if you’re also hoping to explore nearby mountain towns like Breckenridge and Copper Mountain.

Thousand Peaks Ranch Campground in Hartsel has Scenic Mountains, is a getaway and a home away from home for many users. The campsites are best suited for tents and RV stops. Some of the campsites are close to stunning views and you can sleep every night to the sounds of coyotes and other animals. We are very close to many places where you can find a river to fish, take a walk in nature or take a quick dip in the cold waters. Thousand Peaks Ranch Primitive Campground is a 40-acre site each with a table, fire pit and grill. There is a fee for its use and the stay limit is three weeks. We have well water to supply your shower and are located close to the center of the camp. Thousand Peaks Ranch offers a group campsite with 8 separate group campsites. These sites vary in size: Group sites 1, 2, and 7 ($40/ night) can accommodate between 10 and 25 people per site. Group sites 3-6 ($80/night) can accommodate between 25 and 50 people per site. Group Site 8 ($120/night) accommodates up to 75 people. Each site is equipped with 1 or 2 picnic tables and a Fire Pit. There is a large field area in the center of these sites that can be used for group activities. Please keep in mind that we are a primitive campground. Ample space to pitch a large tent. The large lean to with chairs and table was great for dinner on a cool evening. We had to pack up and get moving but this would be a fun place to stay for a couple days in the area. Gerry was kind and helpful.

This was my first time car camping and it should be called “GLAMPING” because of all of the extra amenities! We loved the gas fire pit and string lights at our site. Having electricity and water at the site helped us stay warm in the car, as we plugged in 2 heated throws. Both Belinda and Todd greeted us separately and provided us with helpful information. We loved interacting with the farm animals, especially the Jacob Sheep and turkeys! The bathhouse was very clean. The shower was especially modern and nice to have during our stay. We enjoyed our stay very much!

Great spot especially for a group. Definitely will come back if in the area. They were very accommodating with the fire pit and table. Fire pit was super nice, we were able to put a grill that we brought right on top and cook our dinner over the fire. The sunset and stars were amazing. Seeing the Milky Way with bare eyes is always a treat.

I had a solid stay. Great mountain views. Fire pit kept me warm and dry after a brief rain while setting up camp. Great midway point to split a longer drive into two legs for a holiday weekend adventure. Enjoy seeing farm animals on the way in an out, although the dirt road causes some serous rumble factor in certain areas.

We had such a wonderful stay at Frenchman Ranch in Buena Vista! Belinda and Todd’s property is absolutely beautiful, everywhere you look feels like a postcard. We found ourselves constantly stopping to take photos of the ranch, the vintage equipment, and of course the cows we got to watch every day. The animals added so much charm to our experience, handsome George (the pig) kept us company, and the sassy sheep strutted around like they owned the place (and honestly, we loved it). It felt like a true slice of Colorado ranch life. The location is also perfect, peaceful and scenic, yet just a short drive to downtown Buena Vista, where you can enjoy shops, dining, and the charm of town. We couldn’t have asked for a better stay, and we’re so grateful to Belinda and Todd for sharing their special property with us. Highly recommend!!!

This was our second year coming to Belinda and Todd’s amazing property! What a gift it was to explore again and settle in such a perfect camp spot with our pup and 20’ travel trailer. Highly recommend. Close to town. Such great hospitality and touches (and super clean shower house!!) loved the propane fire pits - no need for firewood. Our river time was priceless (a beautiful 3/4 mile walk) for some of the best views of the Arkansas! Goats cows and rooster an added touch. Thank you, we will be back!

Weekend Trip to Wonderlust Off-Grid Camper
Sooo quiet and be peaceful. Super dark at night. Great alternative to tent camping… the bed was very comfortable. It’s decorated really well. I would only recommend a solar shower and better toilet. But, hey, it’s camping. Great place.

Where to go

Dillon Reservoir Recreation Area

Also known as Lake Dillon, this spot sits between the towns of Dillon and Frisco as one of the area’s most popular destinations. With several campgrounds, boat and kayak rentals, and nearly 27 miles of shoreline to explore, the Dillon Reservoir Recreation Area is a top choice for camping close to town. Hikers will find several great trails in the area that offer stellar views of the Ten Mile Range and cyclists will enjoy the paved trail that runs over the Dillon Dam.  

White River National Forest

The 2.3 million-acre White River National Forest offers unrivaled outdoor recreation opportunities in the Rocky Mountains between Dillon and Aspen. It’s the most visited national forest in the country and offers incredibly scenic terrain from crystal clear mountain lakes and trout streams to wildflower-filled meadows and jagged fourteen thousand foot peaks. Numerous campgrounds are scattered throughout the national forest and there’s no shortage of places to pitch a tent in the backcountry.

Green Mountain Reservoir

Heading north from Dillon on Highway 9 takes you quickly to another large reservoir. Green Mountain Reservoir is only a 30-minute drive from Dillon and boating, fishing, and hiking are popular activities on the water. Campers will find seven campgrounds along the shore of the lake, nearly all with beautiful views of the lake.   

When to go

The best time for camping, hiking, and water sports in Dillon, Colorado is when the weather warms, typically June through early September. Summer is definitely the busiest time; the Dillon Amphitheatre hosts dozens of free shows in summer and the Dillon Saturday Farmer’s Market draws in quite the crowds. Dillon sits at 9,111 feet so come prepared for chilly nights even in the middle of summer. Fall is also a lovely time to visit Dillon. Thanks to its high elevation, the mountains around Dillon are one of the first places in Colorado to see fall colors. 

Know before you go

  1. Camping at the Dillon Reservoir is extremely popular so book sites as soon as you know your travel dates. Reservations can be made at the Heaton Bay Campground and Peak One Campground up to six months in advance. 
  2. Campsites at the Dillon Reservoir’s Pine Cove Campground are available first-come, first-served only.  
  3. Early morning, before the afternoon winds pick up, is the best time to kayak or paddleboard on Lake Dillon. 
  4. Swimming is prohibited in Lake Dillon due to safety reasons but is allowed at the Green Mountain Reservoir. There’s even a designated swimming area at Green Mountain
