Mono Loco Flats sits on a Mesa nestled in the Sangre de Cristo mountains near Sangre De Cristo creek and La Veta Pass. Growing up in Southern Colorado I was fortunate to explore this zone as a kid and I feel fortunate that I can share Mono Loco Flats with others. Set up camp and enjoy sweeping views of Mount Blanca and the surrounding Sangre De Cristo mountain range. This 15 acre camp is situated just off highway 160 for easy access, approximately 25 minutes from The Great Sand Dunes Natianal park and Zapata Falls. Mono Loco Flats is an excellent home base for exploring the San Luis Valley. Sangre de Cristo Creek is a short hike or drive to the south. Fort Garland is a 10-minute drive. All three sites provide 360 panoramic views with epic sunrise and sunset views of Mount Blanca. Wild horses and prong horned antelope may wander the Mesa as you enjoy your camp. The natural beauty of these three campsites is worth protecting so please if you pack it in, pack it out. This is a dry camp with no toilet or garbage facilities. Please treat this land with respect so that future campers may enjoy the land free of rubbish. All three campsites are accessible with any type of vehicle, and the long driveway and turnaround can accommodate any trailer or RV up to 20'. This is a lovely spot that we had all to our selves. We parked our trailer near the river and could listen to it all night long. This was a convenient location to both Curchara (2 miles) and La Veta (9 miles), plus all of the hiking trails and lakes in the surrounding national forest. I'm sure we will be coming back.

Beautiful and spacious site. It is close to the highway making access easy, especially if you have a large rig (we camped with a 28’ fifth wheel and 16’ trailer and had PLENTY of space). River runs next to site. Trees and brush surrounding, making it private with great views. Close to La Veta and Cuchara. Cows might greet you from the neighboring pasture!

The Lone Spruce was hands-down one of the easiest Hipcamp sites we’ve ever found—great layout, spotless, and super welcoming. The host was amazing (I’m still not convinced she didn’t secretly train the wildlife to show up on cue just for our review). Night one: my wife and I are sitting down to dinner when I glance out the camper window and—casual as can be—a bear strolls by on the other side of the river. Later that evening, while enjoying a gorgeous sunset, two giant bucks wandered through the site like they were auditioning for a nature documentary. Not to be outdone, the second night a parade of turkeys marched across the river as if they were in on the whole thing. We left with full bellies, full camera rolls, and full hearts. The Lone Spruce isn’t just a campsite—it’s a front-row ticket to the wildlife channel, minus the commercials. We’ll definitely be back, and if you’re lucky, maybe the host will “release the animals” on schedule for you too. Highly recommended!

Perfect desert style camping! Bring your own shade! ☀️ Thank you for providing water with large tank for the unbeatable camping bathroom experience! A flush toilet and a HOT shower under the incredible starry skies are unmatched! The lake is a 3 min drive or a small hike away. You cannot swim in this lake but there's plenty of beach and you can still fish and be on-water! The small town aboit 12 mins away is perfect for any last minute or forgotten quick grabs. A perfect get away without getting too far away!

Casa de Santa Maria is a beautiful and unique campsite. With outstanding views of Blanca Peak, Ute Mountain, and Culebra Peak you can stay in camp and be rewarded with eyefuls of beauty. As a base camp it is easy to get away to Great Sand Dunes National Park, or the hot springs in Hooper (Sand Dunes Recreation Hot Springs Pool). There’s great fishing and hiking opportunities along the way to Chama, New Mexico, and just 65 miles away in Taos you can enjoy history, art, and great food. Susan is a fantastic host! You won’t find a better place for a spiritual reset than Casa de Santa Maria!

Great spot! We had site #2 and loved the location. It was a little windy (mostly in the afternoon), but the stars at night and the privacy made up for that. There were no other campers at the other site when we were there, but they seemed far enough away that it would not have mattered. It was a really nice touch that there was firewood in the firepit for us to use. We didn't use it though because it was windy and I was nervous about anything spreading. I have 4 small kids so we would have been doing a fire earlier in the evening before bedtime. After the kids were in bed, it was calm enough to have had a fire if I wanted. Also, I was able to get my remote Wifi to pick up a little signal there. Thanks for a great stay. We'd definitely stay again.

It’s 100% as advertised! Beautiful views, quiet but close to the highway! Loved the opportunity to see the Milky Way and do some star gazing. The sky was amazing.
