The views of the La Platas and Sleeping Ute are ever changing, awe inspiring, and constant from the deck of The Art Shack. On the property are cats, two dogs, two equines (you will hear our burro braying). Our neighbors have yaks, cattle, goats, sheep, dogs, horses, poultry, and other farm animals. You will also see the wild critters that inhabit our corner of La Plata County. You are welcome to wander our property beyond the Big Stick Ditch but do not go into the pasture with our burro or enter any of the out buildings. Park within steps of the Art Shack, cross the foot bridge over the bubbling irrigation ditch, and you have arrived! Please remove your shoes before entering! There is electricity, a queen bed, rustic chairs inside, an outdoor table and chairs, a composting toilet, a coffee machine, and purified drinking water for your use. An electric heater is supplied during winter months. There is no air conditioning. Or head just 40 minutes into Durango for a ride on the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a run on the rapids of the Animas River, or a powder day at Purgatory (resort an hour from the site). If you want to venture further afield, Telluride, Moab, Monument Valley, and Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are all within 2.5 hours. Or take a drive along the San Juan Skyway scenic byway to see the best of Colorado's Western Slope including Silverton and Ouray. Your hosts are avid outdoor enthusiasts who can give you the details (and loan you some maps and guidebooks) on all of the great things that await you at our little slice of southwest Colorado!

Weekend Trip to Linda M.’s Santa Rita Ranch

This was my second time staying here, and it will always be one of my favorite places to stop. Linda is a great communicator & even makes sure to provide curated directions, depending on which way you are coming from. Highly recommend stopping for a night (or two!) The donkeys are also a plus :)

Loved it! A high open plain ringed with mountains: Mesa Verde and Ute close, Telluride, San Juans and Bears Ears on the horizon. Immaculately clean and generous kitchen and dining/hanging out areas. The tent/RV sites are very basic but the rest makes up. Great hosts, dark sky. Didn’t see inside the cabins but the hogan was lovely.

I car camped here and had a super sweet one-night stay where all my needs were met. The land is beautiful, gorgeous sunset and sunrise, and it was sweet to have communal space like the kitchen, showers, bathrooms, and more. The camp hosts were very sweet and welcoming! I would definitely camp here again and would recommend it.

This place is very beautiful! The hosts were very kind and helpful. It is a very peaceful place and not too far from Telluride. I drained my car battery on accident and they gave me a jump in the morning! Next time I am in the area I will definitely go back!

The art shack is a great spot. The view is gorgeous and even though the temperature got up to 87 it was nice a cool as the shack is in a small group of pine and popular trees. Even if it had been too hot Gretchen provided a cooler with a fan. There's a swing out front that was lovely to sway on while I watched the sunset. It was beautiful and peaceful. In distance you can hear some cows mooing and an occasional donkey song. Everything you want in a weekend away.

The site was gorgeous, with plenty to do nearby, but what really stood out to me was the camp hosts. I was struggling with my equipment and the hosts helped me get everything set up for a comfortable stay. It brought good stay to a great stay and I was so grateful! Surrounded by views more gorgeous than I ever could have imagined, it was nice to have people equally fantastic!

Linda’s Santa Rita land is a beautiful, quiet, rural setting. Friendly horses and donkeys graze nearby and a small, historic irrigation canal lined with cottonwoods and chimesa runs by the sites. Linda was great to work with during my 7-day stay.
