WHAT TO DO:
River's Edge Cabin is located in a residential area 1 mile from town and just down the street from local hiking/running/bike trails. A drive into town is only a few minutes and there's so much to explore in the valley and surrounding mountains - all a short distance from the house.
Kern River runs all year as it is part of the Mt. Whitney drainage (the highest peak in the contiguous US).
The river flow peaks in spring with the snow melt from higher peaks. This is the best time for whitewater rafting and kayaking.
Late summer is good for tubing and floating when the river is lower.
Fishing is best fall through early spring before the spring runoff.
Winter brings snow to the higher elevations (rarely does snow stay long in Kernville). There's a natural snow ski resort 20 mins away and sledding is always fun.
Hiking is good all year. In the hottest time of summer, it's best to hike early in the morning.
GETTING AROUND:
Roads in and around town are paved, well-maintained, wide and mostly calm. There are no traffic lights in Kernville! A car is a must to see most of the hiking spots and sightseeing, but you can walk to the nearby Whiskey Flat Trail (about a mile away).
Bicycles are great for around town and some closer hiking trails. We love the walk into town through our rustic neighborhood (especially with our dog). Bring your bikes for road and trail riding.
Guided river rafting tours are an amazing way to see the river! Tubing too. We'll share all our tips in a digital guidebook that we provide after booking.
