If you want to experience the vast Alaskan wilderness but prefer a few modern conveniences, RV camping is an excellent option. You don't necessarily need to own your own RV to go cruising around in Alaska, as plenty of companies offer camper vans and RVs for rent so that you can simply fly in and pick up your temporary home on wheels. Much of Alaska is public land, and boondocking is popular, so you're unlikely to find yourself in a situation where you have nowhere to park. Alaska state parks, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the US Forest Service, and the US Army Corps of Engineer all manage RV-friendly campgrounds, and there are plenty more private options, both in and around cities and in more remote locations. Just be aware that most campgrounds and RV parks in Alaska are only open in the warmer, brighter months of May through September.

The beautiful Blueberry Lake campground on Thompson Pass has spectacular 360-degree mountain views. 21 sites are available (1-17 on a paved loop road) near the lake. Vault toilets and a water pump are available for use. Several sites work well as group camping sites. There are no RV hookups or pull-throughs. Pets and generators are allowed. Bring your own firewood. The McAllister cabin, at the mouth of Shoup Bay Marine State Park, is best accessed by kayak or boat. There is a narrow, tide dependent channel that leads to the inner lagoon where Moraine and Kittiwake cabins are located. Kayaks recommended for access.

Pinochle Trail is part of the historic Knik - Nelchina Trail, used by natives, trappers, miners, and hunters for centuries. It follows the natural route from the Matanuska Valley over the mountain range into Copper River country. Hicks was one of the early guides who had a cabin at Hicks Creek. Along with U.S. Army Lieutenant Joseph Castner, he helped blaze a trail northwest for Captain Glenn in 1898. Described in his journal as a "Tale of Hardship and Suffering," they ended up eating their mules and shoes before reaching their distant goal to the north. Today, we use these trails with relative ease compared to the early explorers, but the scenery and mud holes still remind us of what they endured.

Seaside Farm is a 30 acre, magical, park like farm on the shores of Kachemak Bay, just outside of Homer, a few miles down from the Kilcher Homestead where I grew up in the 1940's! . Now a song bird sanctuary, with trails, lawns, gardens, trees, hay fields, and a private beach, cabins, a clover camping meadow, Seaside was once part of an original Alaska pioneer homestead. It is also the home of hundreds of songbirds, moose, coyotes, wild hares, flocks of sandhill cranes, two sweet Morgan Horses, an assortment of chickens and visitors seeking peace, nature, wildlife, pristine beaches, in a real Alaska, non touristy setting. This property has three different types accommodations: Rustic, cozy cabins, a big field for tent campers, and a few spaces reserved for 4 wheel drive vans, and small vehicle camping, including rooftop tents If you prefer camping away from the tourist crowds, you will find our soft clover meadows and well kept lawns, a deluxe and memorable experience. The beach is a short walk down the trail, where its peaceful and private, with only the sound of the seagulls and waves. Van campers have a few special areas to park their vehicles, with views of the glaciers and mountains. There is limited parking and turnaround space, and we like our farm not too crowded, to provide a special rural experience to all who visit. Two are off grid, close to the beach, private and magical, with wood stoves. You can walk on the beach from the main lodge parking area, there is a covered camping pavilion available to all guests, a communal campfire spot and bbq grill, lovely maintained walking trails and meadows, and even wifi! All dogs must be well behaved, social, on leashes and at owner's side at all times to protect our trusting wildlife from accidental harm, like our baby pheasants, moose, bunnies, and songbird nests!

Learn more about this land: This Clam Gulch 5.5 acre property offers Bluff tent camping in two locations:  Campsite 1 The Meadows, a very large meadow overlooking Cook Inlet and Campsite 3 The Sweet Spot, a secluded  meadow with an unbelieveable view of Cook Inlet and Mount Redoubt .   Wake up and watch the surf roll in from 200' up.  The only thing you will hear is birds and surf.  The Site 1 The Meadows, is a very large meadow which is kept mowed.  It is accessed by foot on a loop trail from the parking area (the Moose Trail) or from parking near the Pink Shed.  It is close to the outdoor table and gazebo allowed for guest use. This site can accomodate three tents. Site 3 The Sweet Spot  is the newest campsite.  It is also accessed by the Moose Trail, and has an unbelievable view of Cook Inlet and Mount Redoubt.  Have coffee and watch the sun rise. It is about 100 yards from the parking area Trails to the meadows are maintained and marked. Campers may  use the gazebo, picnic table, swing, charcoal barbecue, and the granite table located on the Bluff near the Owner's cabin, next to the gazebo. Vehicles must park in  designated campsite parking areas, and campers take the short walk to Site 1 or Site 3 camping meadows.   There is a Porta-Potty Near the Bluff Cabin.  There is also a first aid kit.   Campers please bring your own water.   We recommend 8 gallons for two days.  Closest potable free water for refills is Rocky's in Kasilof.  Volcano and ocean views to die for! This is approximately 3.5 hours from Anchorage. Clam Gulch Beach is 4 miles, Deep Creek Beach and Ninilchik Beach is 14 miles.  Anchor Point and Homer are less than an hour's drive.

Jessica is super kind and has amazing attention to detail with the decor, beauty, and great flow of the property she designed for guests! We were able to take our dog there with lots of space to enjoy walks in a gorgeous woods setting right on the lake! The amenities are off the charts, the sites are spacious and private and we really enjoyed our short stay! We checked in late and left early and it was easy to use the app. She even has a la carte options like a propane fireplace, sauna, hot tub and kayaks available to all guests....absolutely incredible, highly recommend and we will stay again!

We had such a fantastic time here! The hot tub and sauna, along with the outdoor showers, were so nice after traveling. The campground is well laid out and felt safe, and the spots were relatively private. We really wish we had had time to take advantage of the kayaks at the lake! It was very picturesque though. I also really appreciated the well stocked common area with some items for sale. Jessica and her family were also super nice and helpful! They had great recommendations.

We camped during the late summer in our sprinter van. They don’t have electric yet but they will very soon. It’s a lovely place tucked away but close enough to town. They have truly put love, blood sweat and tears into making this a lovely place to stay. Jessica is a charming host! They have some beautiful and even hilly hiking trails right around the place that could keep you busy for a while. The kayaks are fun paddle to around the lake. The hot tub was such a lovely bonus addition. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

We had such a great time camping. The hot tub, ax throwing, lake views were well worth the drive. We can’t wait to plan a longer trip next year so we can get use of the kayaks!

1 night at Talkeetna Lake Retreat

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at this campground with our RV. We felt safe and enjoyed plenty of privacy. Although it’s a newer campground and not all amenities (power/water) were yet available, we still had a fantastic time kayaking on the lake and truly appreciated the warm hospitality of our host.

Weekend Trip to Talkeetna Lake Retreat

talkeetna lake retrait is fantastic. the retreat is beautifully designed with lots of warm and useful details. jessica welcomes us personally and explaines everything. the sites are very nicely laid out, with plenty of space and picnic tables with parasols. we also get a gas fire pit. there is a club house with bath and shower, as well as sauna and hot tube. you can also use boats if you want. we enjoyed our two nights there. thanks to jessica.
