Description

Amidst open woodlands interspersed with blue oaks, foothill pines and lupine or Indian paintbrush in the fertile spring wildflower season, you can sleep off the delicious exhaustion of days spent in the saddle, on a pair of jet skies or dipped in a warm summer lake! No matter where you pitch your tent at Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, you’ll never be too far from the refreshing song of water. Campsites here tend to be especially kid friendly, with easy access to boat ramps and picnic tables that border the lake’s splendor. In this well-loved recreation area you have more than one camping option to choose from. Peninsula Campground, a more secluded spot between the north and south forks of the American River, provides 100 family campsites and can accommodate trailers up to 18 feet and motor homes up to 24 feet. There are no site hookups, but there are flush toilets, hot showers and piped drinking water. You also have your pick of two launch ramps and a day use area.

We just got back yesterday and wanted to write when info is still fresh in our minds. We were 4 families and a total of 15 people at sites 58-96.
* The park says it can accommodate up to 8 people per site, but only a very few sites allow for a 8 person tent and much fewer that allows multiple tents per site. Luckily we booked 4 sites so we were able to accommodate our group.
* Make sure you do not go when it is hot. The trees and site layouts are not good. Our sites were constantly under the sun. You will need plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.
* Bathrooms were not maintained at all. We did not see any cleaning happen during the 3 days we were there. Not sure if the park or the visitors has to be blamed.

Gorgeous campground but be aware, many sites 78-81 facing the lake are quite literally on top of one another. If you are more solitary, pick sites away from the lake edge. Sound carries here and it's very noisy!
