Camping at the foot of the Mendips – next door to an activity centre and dry ski slope

This dog-friendly campsite at the foot of Somerset’s Mendip Hills offers holidays with the potential for adventure. Mendip Ski Camp is so-named for its proximity to an activity centre which offers ski-ing, snowboarding, and tobogganing on its dry ski slope, plus a whole host of other activities to get the adrenaline pumping. Then there’s the Mendips themselves; an area famed for Cheddar Gorge, for caves, for climbing and hiking. And let’s not forget the fun of camping. Mendip Ski Camp is somewhere to toast marshmallows on the campfire, watch the stars come out at night, and listen to birdsong as you wake up, ready for the next adventure.

It’s a simple site but all the basics are well covered and kept clean. There are flushing loos, hot water showers, a drinking-water tap and somewhere to wash up. There’s grey-water and chemical disposal as well – handy for the campervans, caravans, and motorhomes, which are welcome alongside tents. Everyone shares two tree-lined fields and you can choose where you pitch or park up. Campfires are allowed in off-ground fire pits and, if you don’t have your own, you can hire one. Logs are also for sale.

This campsite is easy to get to and easy to explore from, thanks to a location not far from an A-road which runs across the top of the Mendips towards the Somerset coast. It’s far enough that no road noise will reach your pitch but close enough to be handy. It provides a quick route to the beaches of Weston-Super-Mare and to the road that leads to Cheddar, its gorge and its caves, just five miles away. Closer than that, there’s another classic Somerset attraction: Thatchers Cider Farm, just a mile or so down the road. But nothing is closer than the activity centre that’s just a walk up the hill.

Mendip Ski Camp is located at the foot of the Mendip Hills in an AONB Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our spacious and friendly site is easily accessible with large, tree-lined meadows offering a secluded and peaceful base for campers to enjoy. We welcome tents, camper vans and motorhomes with easy access and plenty of space to manoeuvre. There is an abundance of activities to enjoy as we are located adjacent to an outdoor activity centre and dry ski slope. A short drive will take you to nearby places of interest such as Cheddar Gorge and Caves, Weston super Mare beach, Bath and Bristol, Glastonbury Tor and Wells Cathedral. The Mendip hills offer a great place to explore and an ideal location for walking and cycling with plenty of pubs along the way.

Nearby attractions

The Mendip Activity Centre is next door to Mendip Ski Camp. It offers a range of activities on and off site including ski-ing, tobogganing, climbing, abseiling and frisbee golf. For a self-guided adventure, how about heading to the nearest village, Sandford (one mile) to join the Strawberry Line? It’s a traffic-free route along a former railway line for walkers and cyclists. You can use it to take on the eight-mile round trip to Cheddar and back. By road, Cheddar is about five miles. There you can drive through the gorge or walk along the top of it on the West Mendip Way. Gough’s Cave and Cox’s Cave are a popular attraction at the town-end of the gorge. On the other side of the Mendip Hills National Landscape is the city of Wells (14 miles) with its impressive cathedral and Bishop’s Palace. Glastonbury is 18 miles from site, Bristol 15 miles, and Bath is 24 miles. For a day at the seaside, the long sandy beaches of Weston-super-Mare are seven miles from the campsite.

Food and drink

Mendip Ski Camp is situated almost equidistant between the villages of Sandford and Churchill; each has a pub which serves food. In Sandford it’s The Railway Inn which has the added bonus of being part of Thatchers Cider Farm where you can go for a tour as well. In the other direction, The Crown is a traditional pub serving food. If you don’t mind heading out in the car, you might like to try the good food at The Stag and Hounds (just over a mile) or The Swan at Rowberrow (two miles). If you’re tackling the Strawberry Line on bikes or on foot, the Strawberry Line Tea Room at Winscombe makes for a good stopping-off point at the halfway mark. For campsite supplies, there’s a small shop within walking distance.
