Luxury bell-tent glamping for couples and families in the serene Wye Valley.
The words 'boutique' and 'luxury' get bandied about a lot in glamping circles, but for the site at Stargazer Glamping in Herefordshire border country, they are probably understatements. Let's start with the location; a Georgian country pile in the outstandingly beautiful Wye Valley, which straddles the England-Wales border. It's a land of misty mornings, shaded forests, valley meadows, and mountain views, not to mention glorious sunsets and star-filled skies — if glamping magic is going to happen anywhere, it's here. Behind the house, in the extensive, mature woods and gardens, are three separate glamping areas, each centred on a spacious Lotus Belle tent with its accompanying facilities. The 'Mahal' is the showstopper, a simply enormous specimen — the sort of thing a desert potentate might entertain in — which sleeps at least eight in four separate rooms, with a whopping 65 square metres of floor space. The other two are six-metre 'Stargarzer' tents — one with an added 'Airbud' pup — so depending on your family grouping, these each sleep anything from two to six people. Furnishings and decor throughout are stylishly top-notch — think country-house hotel with a splash of Scandi-rustic charm — so it's not just proper beds and rugs, but also soft robes, cut flowers, sofas, armchairs and coordinated colours. Outside, you get your own fully equipped cabana-style kitchen — "You won't have to bring a thing" is the promise — and attached to this are pristine hot-water shower facilities, loo, and washing-up area. The knives are sharp, the pots and pans un-battered, while dining is at solid tables and chairs on matching crockery with proper glassware. At this point, things start to get, well, even more boutique and luxury, for want of better words. Finnish wood-fired hot tub? That's a yes. Hammocks in wooded glades, comfy sun-loungers, and an impressive fire bowl that's almost three-foot across? Yes again. A communal, outdoor honesty bar with its own drink-stocked fridge, firepit, and free-to-use pizza oven is a place to chill, while a potter around the well-tended grounds turns up rose-scented grassy paths, vegetable and herb gardens, orchards, and scratching chickens. It's all extremely well thought out and playful, too, as the invitation to curl up for the night on an outdoor iron bed attests. Ask for a telescope and one will be provided. You can see the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains on a clear day, while starry nights show you the Milky Way in all its glory. Stargazer is everything that's promised and more. It might even be unique — to use another word that's bandied about — but it's certainly a gloriously upmarket and relaxing base for hanging out with the family in one of Britain's most cherished landscapes.

Lotus Belle 6 M Stargazer
Everything was so organized and couldn't fault the well stocked kitchens. We went as a whole family, so hired all the tents and had the site to ourselves, and couldn't have been a better holiday. Thanks Dominic 😃

Lotus Bell Mahal
A wonderful set up with everything to make a relaxing and luxurious stay. Everywhere are comfy lounging spaces to enjoy the scenery. Kitchen was fully equipped although perhaps a small fridge would be handy as the cool box wasn't really big enough for 8 people. Thanks to Dom and wife for providing a lovely setup 🤗

Lotus Belle 6 M Stargazer
A lovely getaway
Fab location, easy access to the River Wye and the Forest of Dean. Great hosts, lovely site with stunning views of the hills and areas to watch the sun setting. Attention to detail in individual areas as well as around the site. Needed a longer stay to fully relax around the site as we were off doing local activities (plenty to do) each day.

Lotus Belle 6 M Stargazer
Our family loved our stay at Stargazer, the outdoor space was just what we needed to break from city life. The hot tub was used every day, our 3 year old especially enjoyed that. Our 1 year old loved chasing the chickens, and both of them spent all their time outdoors with us. The play tent, fairy garden & fairy lights at night time are perfect for the children; we have some great memories from our stay. The glamping areas are nicely spread out so you have privacy The kitchen was very well equipped, the shower had all the hot water we needed and the honesty shop is stocked full with useful and delicious things. Dom & Helly are very welcoming and lovely people. They can’t do enough for you and are always on hand if you want for anything. We’ll be back!
From the host
Stargazer Glamping is a unique boutique glampsite set in the most gorgeous mature garden enviroment in the grounds of a Georgian country house. The site consists of 3 glamping areas that are well seperated from each other. Each area having its own 6 person woodfired hot tub, extensively equipped kitchen, hot shower with limitless hot water and seperate toilet. Each has its own firepit and BBQ, sun bed seating and hammocks. You have your own dining table and chairs under a pretty awning. The main site consists of over 250 mature and rare trees, rose walks, orchards, vegetable and herb gardens, free ranging chickens providing your fresh eggs and we also have mini-lop rabbits. There are various private seating areas dotted around the site. The beautiful communal bar area has an Ooni pizza oven and there is a hammock garden and a beautiful fairy garden. The views are spectacular from the property consiting of the Welsh mountains, open fields and forest. Sunsets and starry night skies are easily viewable from the site (Telescopes provided free of charge). We are in a dark skies area so viewing the Milky Way with our powerful telescopes is especially fun. Heating is available in the tents during the cooler months.
Nearby attractions
The Stargazer Glamping grounds are pretty enticing themselves, with all sorts of strolls and quiet corners, while 100 yards down the road is the South Herefordshire Golf Club (01989 780 535), as well as a beautiful fishing lake just beyond one of the fields. For something a bit more active, you're right on the doorstep of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty — it starts at the bottom of the hill — which is well set up for canoeing, wild swimming, fishing, walking, and cycling. There's plenty of information on the official website, including downloadable trails, but for just a taster of the area on foot you can pick up the spectacular Wye Valley Walk at nearby Ross-on-Wye (three miles west of the site) for valley climbs and riverside walks towards the historic border towns of either Monmouth or Hereford. A quick, 1-mile drive southwest to the Forest of Dean offers plenty more walking, plus rock climbing, horse riding, mountain biking, and a Go Ape treetop adventure course. If you were going to hit just one destination here, make it Symonds Yat Rock (0300 0674800), where there are walking and cycling trails and stunning river views from the site of an ancient hill fort. This is also a great place to try and spot soaring birds of prey including peregrine falcons, sparrowhawks, goshawks, and buzzards. For more urban delights, you can't move for historic border towns in these parts, full of indie shops, ancient remains, medieval churches, and charming old pubs. Hereford remains delightfully under the radar – just half an hour's drive away – and boasts the world's oldest surviving medieval map, the Mappa Mundi, housed in Hereford Cathedral (01432 374200).
Food and drink
The closest village shop — Lea Stores (01989 750458) — is in Lea, two miles south, which has groceries and a deli counter. There's a great local pub too, the award-winning Alma Inn at Linton (01989 720355), which is a handsome country tavern serving a good range of beers and ciders and excellent pub food. It's less than a mile from the site, but be warned — it's a stiff walk down one side of the valley and up the other. Also about a mile away, to the north, the Moody Cow at Upton Bishop (01989 780470) is a terrifically accomplished, Michelin-rated restaurant, with inventive menus strong on local and seasonal produce. Don't just turn up expecting to eat — book before you come.  A bit further afield, there's also destination dining at the Lough Pool (01989 730888), a rustic charmer about eight miles west, or drive down to Symonds Yat to Ye Olde Ferrie Inn (01600 890232) for a slice of history – there's been a riverside inn here since the 15th century and it's a lovely place for a riverside walk and a ploughman's lunch. The nearest town, if you want to stroll the streets and pick a pub or a restaurant, is Ross-on-Wye, just three miles from the site.
