Boating, biking and bell tent glamping on a farm near the Blackwater Estuary, where good food and walkable pubs are also on the menu.

A few hundred metres from the sailing-boat-dotted salt waters of the Blackwater Estuary in Essex there’s a farm that can do no wrong. It’s home to some of the best fly-fishing in England, has a Michelin-recommended restaurant and an award-winning fine salmon smokehouse – plus a tea room and deli in an old barn space that will charm your socks off. The latest addition to this prime waterside spot? A camping and glamping site, of course.

Set among Chigborough Farm’s 130 acres, the campsite is actually divided into a collection of different areas. There’s a small tent and caravan meadow, a trio of beautiful pre-pitched bell tents and an individual safari tent in a clearing, reached (with a wheelbarrow full of your belongings) on foot. Separately, there’s also a floating cabin, out on one of the farm’s many sparkling lakes (accessed by row boat) and, for all guests, the likes of a games room, a playground and a dining and kitchen space to use.

Nudging the camping meadow, the pre-pitched bell tents have access to all the same facilities – including modern, wet-room-style showers – and are furnished inside with a proper double bed, soft furnishing and all the bedding and towels you need. In summer you can roll straight from your mattress, peel back the creamy canvas of the tent and step out onto the farm, sheltered by hedges on three sites, with views of open farmland and The Essex Wildlife Trust Reserve to the north.

It’s an easy wander to the seaside – part river, part coast really, but very much with a nautical feel – where maritime images adorn the local pub, 400 metres down the road. Walk along the sea wall to find other watering holes or drive the five minutes to the likes of Heybridge and the old market town of Maldon just beyond. Not that you need travel far for fun. By day, pedalos and boats can be hired for tom-foolery on the farm’s lakes and bikes are also available for off-site exploring. Then there’s the deli, the gift shop and that award-winning fishing to try. Why leave to visit anywhere else?

Oyster Catcher Bell Tent

Extra guests need to bring their own tents** Oyster Catcher is situated on the edge of Willow Camp site - a small rural campsite and our dragon fly maize maze, and enjoys the use of all of the campsite communal facilities. These include shower wet rooms, loos, games room with pool, table tennis and darts. There is also an outdoor communal dining area with pizza oven, electric kettle and toaster and a log cabin fishing lodge with microwave, fridge, freezer etc. In summer months boats and pedalos  can be hired on Home Water Lake.  On the Willow Camp field, there are two porta loos for night time convenience, two outdoor showers and a rustic outdoor washing up area. The price of the Bell Tent includes bedding for the double bed. A bedding pack including a fitted sheet, single duvet and duvet cover and pillow case and pillow can be ordered in the extras for additional children (max 2) sleeping in the Bell Tents. In addition to this the Bell Tent has enough space for up to two extra families to pitch their own tents alongside which need to be paid for in the extras section at the end of the booking. A communal gazebo is also permitted.

Carpers Cabin

Chigborough Carpers Cabin, the latest of our accommodation units, is a one room cabin for Coarse and Carp Anglers who want a little more comfort than pitching a bivvy. Aimed at Anglers who would like to be joined by their familes,  It can sleep up to four in a double bed and a bunk bed. It has a gas hob and tea and coffee making facilites, out door furniture and a fire pit and logs and allows discounted fishing on Chigborough’s established and popular Carp and Coarse lakes. We have Carp to over 40lb, Catfish to 140lb and good bream, tench, roach, rudd and pike. Bedding can also be provided as optional extra. Our aim is to provide a comfortable, relaxing place to rest and stay whilst being close enough to the lake to maximise your fishing trip. Whilst the cabin is just a stones throw from the lake, it isn’t close enough to adequately supervise your rods from inside so all lines must be removed from the water unless you are sitting by them. The cabin is off grid, there is a portaloo in the car park nearby and it is a 5 minute walk from the main campsite facilities which include wet rooms, games rooms, outdoor kitchen, pizza oven, loos and showers. In the main courtyard a short walk away there is a shop, cafe and restaurant. Also on site we have a pottery painting studio and yoga and massage. The cabin is a few hundred metres from the beautiful BlackWater Estuary which is a great place to walk, cycle and visit pubs and tea rooms. The Carpers Cabin accommodation is situated next to our on-site tackle shop.

A natural rustic Hobbit Cottage furnished in country style with wooden double bed, scatter cushions, carpets, blanket box and wooden benches. It is just a short walk from the sea wall and the local coastal village of Heybridge Basin where there are pubs and a Wilkins and Sons tearoom. On site we have toilets, showers, games room, communal dining area with brick pizza oven, log cabin style fishing lodge over looking the lake, The Farm Cafe, Lambton and Jackson Smokehouse, Paul Bloss Purveyor of fine fish and seafood, yoga and complimentary therapies, Maldon Bootcamp. natural rustic Hobbit Cottage furnished in country style with wooden double bed, scatter cushions, carpets, blanket box and wooden benches. We also provide outdoor folding chairs and blankets, a firebowl to cook on and a trug of logs (Extra logs can be ordered in the 'Extras section'). Tawny can sleep up to four and there is plenty of surrounding space for extra guests to pitch their own tents. The double bed is made up as standard, if you'd like to travel light we can also supply bedding for the fold out single mattresses. Please book this in the extras section. A unique pod floating on the edge of a 15 acre trout lake for over 16's only. The Grebes nest has a king sized bed with bedding and towels provided. There is a kitchen area with fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster, BBQ. Crockery, cutlery and utensils are provided. Facilities are nearby on the Campsite or in the Fishing lodge and include toilets and showers, games room with pool and table tennis, pizza oven, freezer and washing machine. We really enjoyed our stay here. Facilities were great apart from the toaster in the outdoor kitchen which tripped the electric but Samantha sorted it straight away following a message to her. Was lovely walking around the lake and we enjoyed some delicious cakes at the farm cafe. My son had fun at the kids playground. Everyone was polite and friendly.

BEWARE: This camp site does not allow camp fires without a firepit, which they hire for £10 a night. This was certainly not clear on the site when I booked - I've camped for 50 years and understand some owners don't want campfires, but they need to tell us that, not turn up and be angry and ruin the evening. I'm afraid our hostess was incredibly rude, making us seem unwelcome throughout, which really spoiled our little holiday. She didn't deliver wood we had paid for twice, the last was a Sunday and we were not reimbursed. Another couple that evening had also not received their wood. That's quite a profit at another £10 each. On the Saturday night it was packed and very rowdy, although our hostess was not responsible for that. The area was nice, we had some lovely walks.

This is a lovely campsite with something for everyone including a lovely lake to enjoy😊 If you are used to 5 star facilities you will be disappointed but there is everything you need. I am used to camping , caravan if and motorhoming and would rate this as good site.. this was my grand children’s first clamping experience and they loved it…

Lovely site with lakes and scenery however the ground was way too rocky and hard to easily put a tent up - the people next to us actually went home as it was too hard. Once the tent was up it was great

The campsite was in a great location, not too far from the sea and nearby villages and had a wonderful lake that you could use. However some of the other facilities were not so great - the showers in the club house were cold, one out of the two washing up sinks was blocked and the portoloos were not cleaned whilst we were there (two nights) and towards the second day they started to smell. The ground was also unbelievably hard and we struggled to get tent pegs in and out of the plot we were on. The outdoor showers were pleasant enough but you needed to take a torch with you if you wanted to shower at night. The plot we were given was a good size - enough space for a tent and car. Probably would not visit again but it was okay for two nights.

We made the most of our short break, location is great and Chigborough Farm is a beautiful place to visit. However, the Carpers cabin is definitely not a great choice for families (please make it clear in description) and it needs to improve largely on cleanliness and provide little bit more privacy.

A gorgeous campsite with lots to do, good facilities and walks nearby. The cafe is a real bonus. Absolutely delicious food. We stayed in Woodpecker which had everything we needed for a long weekend.

Overall a good experience. It took me a while to find the campsite at 8:30pm at night, difficult to see signs in the dark. Lovely campsite, Beautiful lake. There was a party going on and the music stayed on loud till midnight. I would visit again in the hope that there isn’t part on next time!

Lovely campsite close to lakes filled with birdlife. Just one point to raise. The entrance gate into Willow field has an extremely heavy metal arm which needs to be lifted to open the gate. For those who are not tall or strong (!) it would be easy to lose control of it when lifting and does present quite a hazard if it were to fall suddenly. I nearly lost control the first time of opening! A warning on the gate to be careful would be useful.

Very easy to book. Lovely location . Me and my daughter enjoyed it very much. Had toilets, washing up stations, games room, play park, a maze and drinking water available. The only thing that let us down was that the cafe was shut during the time we was there. So we had to cross the very dangerous road to find somewhere to eat. Overall would definitely come again.

We had a great time at this lovely campsite. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get away to peace and nature. The campsite with lakes was beautiful. We kayaked on the lake, the Maze gave our children a lot of fun and they enjoyed a pottery session. Thank you Sam for ensuring that our Pottery was ready to take away with us the next day! Well run, lovely campsite and friendly host.

A beautiful spot. The lakes are lovely. The Maze is fun. The amenities were clean - great hot open air showers by the Maze and more (with plumbed toilets in the barn. The atmosphere was relaxed with a friendly mixed crowd - lots of families.

Great cottage, great campsite. Bit disappointed we couldn’t eat at the restaurant in the evenings but it was great for breakfast. I’d love to see this campsite get more amenities in the willow camp, as well as a shop.

Lovely surroundings and great not having to travel far from London Essex for a quick getaway. I had hoped to paddle board but discovered in the pre arrival info that it’s only possible during summer months (when no fishing). Not an issue for this trip and will likely be back! Plenty of potential to keep the kids happy.

Overall we had a good time, but unfortunately there was noisy music every night we were there (over the weekend) up to midnight which spoiled the atmosphere. Also, only 3 toilets in the nearest block with frequent queues and only 1 washing up sink. More resources would improve the experience. On the plus side, showers were hot and powerful and toilet/showers were clean.

The place is amazing, by a lake, perfect camping for families, easy to find, very quiet. However the facilities should be significantly improved. Too few toilettes, WC and shower together make no sense, level of clearness quite low. Moreover only 1 sink to wash dishes is not enough given the number of guests that the camping can accommodate. Therefore I would strongly suggest this amazing place for a 2night holiday but not any longer

The campsite is a great location and ideal for this part of Essex. The campsite is situated in quite landscape, a great outdoor space. The pitches where nicely spaced out with a play area for the younger children. The only down side is the toilets/ showers though clean, are basic.

This is a lovely site with big flat pitches and a beautiful setting in the lakes. It's a nice cycle route along the sea wall to Malden and Promenade park and there are also some really nice extras on site to keep our slightly older kids entertained. They absolutely loved the pool table and ping pong in the games room!!

We greatly enjoyed our stay at Chigborough Farm, camping in Willow Camp which was tranquil and open. The farm has a great cafe, and Fish stall which we visited - excellent sea-food platters and all sorts of amazing fish. The facilities were generally good, although more toilets would have been useful. Overall it was a lovely experience and I would highly recommend

Great location near to Heybridge basin lovely walks along the river. Lake at campsite was great for paddle boards very picturesque and peaceful. Couple of minor details would score as 5 star. Not quite enough w/c facilities on site for number of pitches and by Sunday no Loo Roll available. We stayed when site was not particularly busy but bins area was over spilling which was a shame. Apart from that overall campsite was lovely and would return

Just under an hour from London, but feeling like a million miles away, Chigborough Farm is a tranquil and picturesque rural oasis on the North of the River Blackwater estuary near Maldon in Essex. The camping and glamping area is nestled in amongst 130 acres of arable land and fishing lakes, there are permissive footpaths throughout. It is just a short walk from the sea wall and the local coastal village of Heybridge Basin where there are pubs and a Wilkins and Sons tearoom. On site we have toilets, showers, games room, communal dining area with brick pizza oven, log cabin style fishing lodge over looking the lake, The Black Pig Farm Cafe, Lambton and Jackson Smokehouse, a fresh fish shop, yoga and complimentary therapies. We offer accommodation in The Raft (floating log cabin), Birdsong Safari tent, Grebes Nest and Woodpecker Pods, Carpers Cabin, Bell Tents and Hobbit Cottages and we also have a seasonal Camping and Caravanning Club Members site and a non members camping area.
Nearby attractions
The farm itself is a treasure trove. Along with the food and drink options, there's fly fishing for trout, carp fishing in the main coarse lakes (please use the red ‘book now’ Button) and a Pottery and Painting Studio  There's also a converted space called ‘Yogiswari’ where you can try pilates, yoga and complimentary therapies. There's easy access on foot or bike to the sea wall by the beautiful Blackwater Estuary. Elsewhere, it's a 10-minute drive to the supermarkets and pubs at Maldon, where Maldon Promenade Park has a 'splash park' (watery fun for kids in summer) and crazy golf, rollerskating, bowling and soft play. Colchester Zoo is 25 minutes away. Tiptree Jam Factory (01621 815407) and Museum is about 15 minutes away. Pedallo’s, rowing boats and kayaks can be used on site on Home Water Lake from 1st July to 14th September. Either hire from us or bring your own.

Michelin-recommended Rubino's Restaurant (01621 855579) is located on the farm and also The Black Pig Farm Cafe. A short walk down the lane and along the sea wall to Heybridge Basin, there’s a choice of two pubs The Jolly Sailor and Old Ship,  and The Lock Tearooms.
