A knobbly backbone of ridge crested by distinctive quartzite rock formations spread-eagled across Shropshire, England, yet close to the Welsh border, the Stiperstones and the rolling green countryside surrounding them make up Stiperstones NNR. This flank of the Shropshire Hills AONB is glorious hill country, especially being framed by two further uplands, England’s Long Mynd and Wales’ Cambrian Mountains. Long-distance footpaths like the Cross-Britain Way pass through, and there are the compelling legacies of prehistoric settlements and 19th-century mining to uncover. Good camping can be found on the western edge of the NNR.

I loved the Boy John. There was so much attention to detail in everything on board. Very comfortable bed and plenty of lighting. Also clear instructions around the site, regarding water, showers, toilets etc. All facilities very clean. Nothing compares to having your own little bit of coastline !!

Great camp site , everything is well organised and well tought . Suzi has put an enormous amount of work and dedication to make this camp site so unique and welcoming. Suzi has gone above and beyond with meticulous arrangements for Geodomes, nice clean and spacious , full off blankets , linens , lamps and gadgets like fans . Her welcom book / guide it is an essence of valuable information where to go and what are best local places to visit . Suzi itself is an very open and friendly person , always ready to help and support. Perfect spot for star gazing.Very dark nights. Cooking/ dining shack is absolutely amazing( brilliant idea itself), everything is there, you can even cook or make bbq during rainy day. Camping stove in situ. Honesty shop - needed essential in situ , wood logs , charcoal , local products like jams ,tea , eggs and coffe . Dog friendly site. Recycling zone present . Would return next year . Can not complaint about anything, everything is well maintained - general site conditions including utilities, essentials and building conditions. Very nice place , come and rejoice with nature.

The site is in a fantastic location, the boat had everything we needed, the site facilities were very good, the woodburner was wonderful, we loved seeing occasional trains go past, our reactive rescue dog loved having the beach areaa to himself. A problem was sorted out within half an hour.

Weekend Trip to School Farm Holidays

We stayed in Stag Lodge. Delighted with our accommodation. It was comfortable, stylish, and had every facility. A wonderful hot tub. Helen was a great host, e mailing a really useful handbook, about the Lodge, & area. I appreciated the fact that all the essential items like soap, dishwasher tablets, salt, pepper, teabags etc etc were supplied…! A great base to enjoy visiting an interesting area.

4 nights at Smugglers Cove Boatyard

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on The Hannah! The location is absolutely stunning and the boat stay was a brilliant change from our usual tent camping. After a few bumped heads from the lower cabin inside, we quickly got used to life aboard. The boat is well equipped with plenty of your basics and some thoughtful additions (including a cool looking radio/CD player). Sophie was a brilliant host and very quickly sorted out a query for us (thank you!!!). Pretty much all of our time, though, was spent outside soaking up the stunning views, watching the birdlife (including one the local Ospreys!) and cooking on the firepit. In the evenings we regularly heard a Nightjar and Tawny Owls, it really was wonderful. The information pack emailed to us recommended a train trip from nearby Penhelig station to Barmouth on the Cambrian Coast Line. We did this and would recommend this too! Beautiful journey with gorgeous views on either side. If you’re looking for a break away from the usual, it’s definitely well worth a stay at Smuggler’s Cove.

Weekend Trip to Bechan Retreats

Amazing lodges, our family had Kites Nest and Barn Owl Lodge and they were perfect for our group size, including a toddler and elderly woman! They were comfortable and gorgeous. Interiors and views were stunning, I couldn't believe the sunsets at night, the hot tubs were such a treat and both lodges had fantastic seating areas on the deck, we went on the steam railway and enjoyed a BBQ at the lodge. Would love to come back next year.

Fabulous site. Small, but pitches well spaced so even if there were people on all pitches it wouldn't feel busy or loud. Geodome was very comfortable with heater and proper bed. Would definitely recommend and if we were to visit the area again (possibly still lots of things in the area we didn't see/do) then we would stay here again.

We had such a gorgeous and relaxing stay at Dan's cabin. By choosing to visit at the end of January, we were a little nervous that we would be cold, but the fire kept us nice and toasty all weekend. Dan was friendly, relaxed and super helpful and he has provided everything you could need for your stay. The spot felt totally private, but equally knew that if we were stuck with anything we'd be able to get help quickly. Lovely to explore the beautiful surroundings and it's a decent but nice walk down to the local pub and back! We'll definitely be returning again.

Weekend Trip to Cae Nant Glamping

Fantastic stay with lovely personalised attention and details. Great quiet tucked away spot and perfect for getting out and about... we had outside hot tub baths on both nights, made pizza on the terrace one evening, and enjoyed movie nights in front of the wood burner (with our nephew with special needs). We were out for pony trekking on the Sunday morning (30 mins away) and then Sunday lunch overlooking Lake Vyrnwy (10 mins away). Lovely cooked breakfast supplies and generally fabulous hosting. Highly recommended.

Riverside glamping in Stiperstones National Nature Reserve guide

Where to go

River East Onny & Darnford Brook

These two waterways link to form a natural divide between Stiperstones NNR and The Long Mynd to the southeast. With some of the only level, grassy ground between these two popular hilly areas, this is a region attracting lots of outdoor lovers. One of the best pitching places can be found in the wildflower meadows near Ratlinghope, where the Shropshire Way and Cross-Britain Way long-distance paths pass close.

The Long Mynd

The dramatic seven-mile-long wedge of plateau southeast of Stiperstones NNR is The Long Mynd: also part of the Shropshire Hills AONB. Scored by steep valleys and covered in stark moorland, it’s a magnet for hikers as several long-distance paths, such as the Shropshire Way and Cross-Britain Way trundle through, alongside mediaeval trading route The Portway. Prehistoric sites litter the hillsides too.

Kerry Ridgeway

Running along a ravishing ridgetop with Wales on one side and England on the other, this ancient route follows the way cattle drovers would have journeyed with their livestock. It spans 15 miles between Kerry in Wales and Bishop’s Castle in England, a few miles south of Stiperstones NNR. Expect comely sites and glamping pods set in rolling fields with fire pits and picnic tables.

Montgomery Canal & Northern River Severn Loop

Partially navigable Montgomery Canal threads between Frankton Junction in England, where it intersects with the Llangollen Canal, and Newtown in Wales. It runs about ten miles west of Stiperstones NNR. Sleepy, scenic countryside makes the whole waterway a very pleasant place to walk, cycle or try narrowboating. For much of its Welsh course (Arddleen-Newtown), the canal runs close to the northernmost winds of the River Severn. This level, lush, river-laced terrain has excellent camping possibilities.
