Between the Blackdown and Quantock Hills Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, amid the endless farmland of the Somerset Levels, lies Taunton. It’s Somerset’s well-stocked county town with all the shops and amenities to prove it – a great place for a day of shopping and fetching supplies but hardly the place to pitch a tent. Step away from the urban centre though and Taunton’s appeal is clear. Rural Taunton is well-connected, picturesque and perfect for camping or glamping. Whether you want to explore Somerset’s hills, moors, levels, coast – or get a taste of all of them, camping and glamping in Taunton can help you do just that. It’s no surprise that in this landscape of farms and apple orchards, there are campsites in fallow fields and barnyards. Among them there’s something to suit every type of camper from simple grass pitches for stripped-back camping to luxury glamping in yurts, tipis, treehouses and more.

The town of Taunton has high street chains, independent retailers and eateries galore so it’s a good place to stock up on supplies or to head out for food if the rain has put a stop to your campfire. It’s also got all the amenities of a modern town from a cinema to a swimming pool and public parks that are just right for a picnic. Visitors might also be interested in the Museum of Somerset, housed in the 12th-century Taunton castle. Just outside town you can find out about one of Somerset’s most-famous exports, cider, at Sheppy’s Cider Farm where a taste and touring will explain all about this local tipple. Gardeners and historians might like a trip to the 50-acre Hestercombe Gardens and it’s hard to find anyone who wouldn’t enjoy a trip on the West Somerset Railway from Bishop’s Lydeard, just five miles away. This heritage railway can whisk you in to Exmoor National Park and all the way to the seaside at Minehead if you stay on board for the whole 20-mile route.

Walking, running and cycling are great ways to explore Exmoor and the Somerset countryside with the Quantock and Blackdown Hills both popular places to head for. There’s also great hiking at Cheddar Gorge, which is a drive of around 45 minutes from Taunton, and one of Somerset’s most-popular sights. From Fossil hunting in Lyme Regis to the East, the quaint fishing village of Beer to massive golden sandy beaches in Exmouth to the west. With lots of woodland walks on the 'doorstep' the East Devon Way is a 5 minute walk away, 15 minutes walk to the Fire Beacon Nature Reserve and for keen hikers, we're close to the South West Coast Path. For mountain bikers, there are some great routes in the local woodlands and bike routes are also close by with the challenging River Exe Loop and family bike routes along the Otter river less than 15 minutes’ drive away.

Off the beaten track on top of the Mendips in an area of outstanding natural beauty. A mixture of four acres of wild woodland, orchard and field set on a hillside. Our Yurt is set up in the trees giving you peaceful seclusion and a clear view across the sea to Wales and the mountains of the Brecon Beacons. The Yurt is big and sleeps up to four very comfortably. It has its own stove and outside is a washroom just for you with hot shower , toilet and sinks. Your own meadow allows you to just relax and be. Up on the campfield you can bring your own tent or hire a Belle tent from us with all the fittings to camp contentedly. Our new Wash House has hot showers, flushing toilets and basins. You can light a fire and cook up a BBQ or maybe just watch the world go by. A huge range of activities are possible or you can lie in the hammock with a good book. We have very friendly dogs and rescue chickens who may come and visit. Wild deer wander past in the early morning mist and the odd buzzard picks an argument with a bunch of crows but nothing much else should disturb you. We moved here after an 18 month search 8 years ago. It was close to everything we wanted and we've spent some time getting a bit closer.

Weekend Trip to Sweet Hill Farm
I have always loved Sweet Hill Farm. It’s a lovely relaxed campsite with sea views and amazing walks nearby. Also, being able to have a camp fire is fantastic. The showers are brilliant too. The only disappointment for me this year is that the compost loos have been replaced with horrible portaloos! Please bring back compost loos, they are so much nicer!

The yurt in the orchard is a lovely, peaceful place to stay. Chris was welcoming and the cream teas were an absolute treat. We had a great time as a family of 4 and our boys loved the hot tub! We would love to return one day. 😀

1 night at Sweet Hill Farm
This was my first time camping here and I will definitely return again. Whilst SatNav got me most of the way, the directions on Hipcamp made the last little bit of the journey much easier. I was welcomed warmly at the well-stocked little cafe, and given a map to show my how to get to the field I pitched in. The tracks on-site are full of large potholes - so definitely something to be mindful of, especially if you have extremely low-suspension on your car! However, take it slow and easy and all is well here. I had the most amazing view, from where I pitched up, over to Portland Bill lighthouse. Both sunset and sunrise were stunning. Facilities here are extremely basic - but it’s enough for those that simply need to get away from life for a while and sleep under the stars without all the creature comforts of home. Of course, there is a place for being able to have all the mod-cons available, but this is camping the way it should be done! I wasn’t here long enough to speak to any of the other campers, but everyone seemed relaxed and there was no loud music or anything played into the night, meaning I could drift to sleep easily enough at the end of the day. Very private, lovely place so quiet, facilities were great, Chris was amazing and went ab9ve and beyond for us. Even put gazebo up over the seating area as on arrival it was raining hard. Yurt was amazing bed was really comfortable. Hot tub was an added bonus and the Bluetooth speaker was a nice touch. our dogs absolutely love the grounds. Would highly recommend. And I think we will be back again one day.

This was my first time ever camping and I had a great time at this site, it's the perfect mix of rural, real camping with local amenities near enough especially for someone doing camping for the first time. Located right near the coast, it's a beautiful view, excellent facilities including showers and cafe. The only downside is that when I did arrive in the evening there was no one to greet us, even though the cafe should've been open at that time but other than that no complaints, wonderful hosts and would definitely go again.

Fabulous 3-field site, fantastically located and very quiet after the August Bank Holiday. Cleanest showers, toilets and guest hut with very friendly and helpful hosts. I'd say more, but it's supposed to be a secret.

Amazing quiet spot (except for some noisy sheep!), plenty of space per pitch & lovely sea views. excellent shower and toilet facilities a very short walk away. Picnic bench and fire pit and wood provided. The tent itself was amazing - looked brand new, on a raised deck which kept it dry and clean & chairs to sit and watch the sun rise with a cuppa, comfy warm beds, rugs, blankets, hot water bottles all provided. Cute little “kitchen” hut with a gas hob and kettle and pans and crockery and cool box - everything we needed for a short break was thought of and provided. Great communication with the hosts beforehand as well. Would highly recommend and love to return if we’re in the area again.

We loved the open, spacious and quiet camping spots at Goren Farm. The showers were hot and the toilets, communal fridge and sink were clean. We went to the farm shop and cafe on our last day and had scrumptious food. Cheese scone with extra cheese and brie panini. Yum! We are going to come back to camp again and definitely for the Goren Children's festival next year! We went to Tukers Arms on the recommendation of another review and loved it. Also the Beer Light Railway is worth a visit. :D

What a wonderful find. Relatively close for a camping site to lots of local amenities and all of the wonderful opportunities that Croyde, Saunton and Wollacombe offer for jut getting out there and calling. The campsite is well maintained and good value. Steve is so knowledgeable and informative and will guide you through what to do and see.

Simple, low impact camping in quiet woods. Spacious enough for our 4 person tent, plenty of shelter, safe for open fire during this really dry weather. We were left alone by the site team. Beautiful area with good access to beaches, interesting settlements and good river for swimming.

The pod is located in a private farm and felt like a little escape from the rest of the world. The view of Woolacombe bay from the pod is stunning and if you're lucky with the weather, the sunset view is incredible too. The pod is well equipped and spacious enough for 2 adults and an infant (we were able to fit a travel cot inside too!). Would highly recommend this to anyone travelling to the area!

This is a really lovely spot for back to basics camping. The eco friendly toilets were well maintained and the water station too. The views were beautiful and the field quiet. We really enjoyed our stay and will likely visit again.
