The best great views campsites near Lyme Regis

·

Set on the Jurassic Coast along the English Channel, Lyme Regis borders East Devon AONB which is just many of the reasons it’s a well-loved place for campers, historians, and Jane Austen aficionados. Known to be one of her favourite places, Jane Austen visited Lyme Regis on more than one occasion and it’s clear why: Sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and rolling hills paint the landscape. Visit the iconic landmark, The Cobb—a historic stone harbour wall and promenade stretching out into the sea. Then, roam the cliffs and find ammonites, belemnites, and other ancient relics embedded in the rocks like Mary Anning did. Despite no shortage of beauty within town, campers can also venture deeper into England’s nature and visit Exmoor, Dartmoor, and New Forest National Parks—all less than two hours away. Tent pitches, caravan parks, glamping accommodations, and lodging rentals guarantee an unforgettable camping trip of any kind near Lyme Regis.

**Now closed except for walkers and 4x4s due to access. Contact directly with Qs and before making a booking - thanks!** Nestled on the hilltops near Bucks Mills and Clovelly, 10-15min walk by footpath from the SW coast path, our 13 acre smallholding-in-progress offers rustic nearly-wild camping in our wildflower meadows. Share your space with hares, deer, foxes, owls, songbirds, field voles, bees and butterflies. The views from the fields are a well kept local secret - from your tent or van look out over Hartland, Lundy island, Saunton, Croyde, Exmoor and Dartmoor, even Pembrokeshire on a clear day! FACILITIES: In keeping with our low impact approach, the fields are just fields, but with the addition of some picnic benches! A flushing toilet, drinking water, hot shower, charging and WiFi are found by the farmhouse. BBQs and fires permitted off the ground and we have fire pits for loan and logs for sale. Please pack out all rubbish and leave NO trace. Dogs welcome under close control - please avoid meadow centres in summer to protect the nesting skylarks and ensure they do NOT chase the wildlife. ACCESS: Easily accessible by 4WD, and 2WD in summer/when dry. Be aware it's a grassy uphill track, if your vehicle is not great off-road... (but everyone so far has been fine!) The views are worth the walk though! Campervans have backup options lower down near the house. THE SITE: Nature spot, relax and stargaze across our 4 fields. We recently planted 800 trees for a new woodland, created a wildlife pond, and are establishing a traditional cider orchard. Rose looks after our vegetable garden and usually has some native breed piglets. Our apiary is managed by Jon who will happily explain about bees... and sell you a jar of honey for breakfast. Note - the area is agricultural with very occasional farm noise and odour. We are pleased to be a South West Coast Path Waymaker, and welcome walkers. We also welcome anyone enjoying the Atlantic Highway or South West 660. We like classics and have spanners! Flexible arrival/departure. If we are not around just choose a spot and we'll find you later. We are both keen adventurers and happy to provide tips on things to do and places to visit! If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see at least one of the amazing sunsets at Red Sky at Night Campsite near Monmouth – but if you don’t, there’s mighty compensation in the shape of the spectacular views from just about everywhere on the site. And of course, on clear nights, the night skies are diamond-bright with stars - we are under one of Wales' Dark Sky Reserves! This family-run camping field on a livestock farm is managed on very laidback lines. Pitch up wherever you like and feel free to park by your tent (weather permitting). Raised campfires are allowed and you can hire firepits and grills (the owners sell local eggs & sausages) and buy bags of wood & kindling. You can bring your dogs too (take them for walks in the adjoining woods) but just be sure to keep them on a lead. Kids are certainly carefully looked after here. Get a fact sheet on arrival and join mini-campers in wildlife hunts through the trees, looking out all the while for buzzards and red kites. Round and about the site, your offspring can entertain themselves on rope swings, making dens and following a mini-tractor course across the camping field. There’s also a football pitch. Wild camping this may be (there’s no electricity on site, please note) but there are two nicely designed compost loos and a covered sink areas with fresh water tap. So bring your guitar, light that fire, break out the barbecue and enjoy the chilled vibe.

The best great views campsites near Lyme Regis guide

Where to go

Exmoor National Park

North of Lyme Regis, Exmoor National Park features ancient woodlands, rugged coastline, and unique wildlife. Private local farm stays, holiday parks, yurts, and designated riverside caravan sites are all available; however, landowner permission is required before wild camping on-site anywhere in the park. After finding a campground, explore Tar Stepps—an ancient clapper bridge, or roam rocky tors in the Valley of Rocks while searching for feral goats and Exmoor ponies. As an International Dark Sky Reserve, Exmoor campers can also catch star-filled skies on clear nights with a chance to see more of the Milky Way.

Dartmoor National Park

Take a scenic southwest drive to Dartmoor National Park for prehistoric landscapes, giant tors, and more wild ponies. Covering nearly 954 square kilometres, Dartmoor is one of the largest national parks in the UK. Private farm campsites, rustic barn rentals, bunk houses, camping pods, and caravan sites are available as well as options for backpack camping in designated private areas that don’t need landowner permission. Then, explore a range of prehistoric sites and structures dating back 3,000 years ago to the Bronze Age, or traverse the Tarka Trail for views of the countryside.

New Forest National Park

Cruise the eastern coastline to New Forest National Park for lush landscapes, majestic trees, and wildlife sanctuaries. Explore Rhinefield Ornamental Drive and Tall Trees Trail lined with redwoods and Douglas firs, or visit any of the wildlife sanctuary habitats protecting rare species like the Adder—Britain's only poisonous snake, the Dartford warbler, New Forest ponies, and the southern damselfly. Camping options throughout the park feature on-site tent pitches and caravan sites run by Camping in the Forest. Private holiday parks and cottage rentals are also available in the park. Unlike other nearby parks, wild camping is not permitted here.

When to go

While Lyme Regis can be enjoyed year-round, campers should consider seasonal weather patterns and personal preferences. Late fall to early spring is damp, chilly, and overcast. December, January, and February are the coldest months with average low temperatures around 3°C. Alternatively, late spring to early fall bring warmth, sunshine, and long summer days. Summer temperatures are often around 21°C.
