Dog-friendly glamping in Holkham National Nature Reserve

·

England’s largest NNR is still vaster than you think because, while stretching only 13 miles between Burnham Overy Staithe (west) and Blakeney (east) along the Norfolk Coast AONB, the amount of land between the closest coastal road and the sea is more expansive than meets the eye. This is all a tantalising tract of beach and dunes backed by enchanting pine forest and interspersed with mudflats. Discover secretive shoreside trails and sleepy lanes for cycling; wildlife-watch for seals around Blakeney Point or for the region’s many overwintering wildfowl. There are many places to peg up a tent on the flat fertile ground behind the coast – not least within the grand grounds of an 18th-century landscaped estate!

🌲 North Norfolk Camping & Glamping Holt Hollow - Lakeside Forest Retreat North Norfolk Camping & Glamping, known as Holt Hollow, provides a rare, tranquil, and back-to-nature escape in the heart of the Norfolk countryside. Nestled in a wooded area on the outskirts of the AONB, the site's most distinctive feature is its beautiful natural lake and surrounding peaceful woodlands, ideal for walks and wildlife spotting. 🔥 Back-to-Basics & Off-Grid Ethos The site strongly emphasizes its back-to-basics philosophy: Off-Grid Living: Holt Hollow operates off-grid with limited to no phone coverage, promoting full disconnection from technology. Glamping units (Shepherd's Huts/Bell Tents) utilize gas-powered showers and solar lighting, with log burners for heat. Campfires: Campfires and BBQs are encouraged and allowed. Glamping units include private fire pits/braziers for evening gatherings under the clear, dark Norfolk skies, which are excellent for stargazing. Core Facilities: Essential amenities are kept clean and functional, including shared shower/toilet blocks and fresh drinking water stations. 🐾 Dog-Friendly Woodland & Accommodation The campsite is proudly dog-friendly, welcoming companions on all pitches (tents, campervans, caravans) and in most glamping units. The open meadows and surrounding woodlands provide ample space for walks, and the lake allows for safe paddling. Some pitches even allow dogs to be off-lead. 🗺️ Local Area: Holt Village and the Coast The site’s rural location is conveniently close to key North Norfolk highlights: Holt Village: The charming Georgian market town of Holt is just a short 5-minute drive away (or a longer walk). It is perfect for exploring independent shops, cafes, and art galleries, and for accessing local gems like Holt Country Park. The Coast: The stunning North Norfolk Coast (part of the AONB) is only a short drive (approx. 20 minutes) away, providing access to: Blakeney Point (famous for seal watching boat trips). Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham Bay (vast sandy beaches). Coastal walks along the Norfolk Coast Path. North Norfolk Camping & Glamping offers an authentic outdoor adventure, blending rustic living with the comfort of having the best of the Norfolk coast and countryside within easy reach.

North Walsham, England · 1 unit
Located on a rural farm near Aylsham in the heart of Norfolk, our handcrafted Shepherd's Hut sits on a secluded water-meadow overlooking a small stream. Available, between April and October, the meadow setting offers a genuine sense of seclusion, with fields, wildlife and open skies all around. Sleeping two, the hut has a traditional feel, made from wood, insulated with lambswool and mounted on cast-iron wheels from a local foundry. Inside, a comfortable double bed, a wood-burning stove and table and chairs create a wonderfully cosy retreat for two. The stove-top kettle means you can brew up without stepping outside, and a welcome box of tea, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper and cooking oil, plus your first basket of logs, ensures a warm and welcoming arrival. There is no mains electricity in the hut or on the meadow, making it a natural choice for those looking for a proper digital detox. Step outside to your own private fire-pit, which doubles as a barbecue with tools provided — ideal for alfresco meals and long, lazy evenings under the stars. With no streetlights anywhere on the farm, the night sky here is truly spectacular. A covered outdoor shelter nearby means you can sit out and enjoy the wildlife and countryside views whatever the weather. For cooking and washing up, guests have exclusive use of an indoor kitchen in a nearby converted outbuilding, complete with a fridge, microwave, single hob, electric kettle, and a set of crockery and cutlery provided free of charge. The private bathroom features a WC, sink and an excellent shower — just the thing after a long walk or a dip in the river. Devices can be charged in the kitchen. The hut sits in a secluded spot overlooking a stream — a tributary of the River Bure — where you can fish, paddle or simply sit and watch the wildlife go by. Pets are welcome and guests are encouraged to explore the wider farm, which is also home to resident artists including a stone-carver and potter. Pets are welcome and one or two tents can be pitched alongside the hut (at additional cost). North Farm is located in Burgh next Aylsham, with Norwich around 15 miles to the south, Blickling Estate just a short drive away, as the Norfolk Broads and coast. Please note we only accept children over 8 due to the log-stove and stream.

Holkham National Nature Reserve camping guide

Where to go

Holkham Hall & Around

Within the NNR and south of Holkham village, this majestic early-18th-century, Neo-Palladian house and grounds were created out of formerly wind-blasted land transformed by the planting of thousands of trees. There is a pop-up campsite open between mid-July and mid-September near the lake on this majestic estate. Also on the Holkham Hall grounds is Ambers Bell Tents Glamping at Branthill Farm. Holkham Bay’s pine-backed sands are an easy walk north, where you can connect to the Norfolk Coast Path.

Scolt Head Island NNR

West of Holkham NNR, more of the same sort of coastline continues and here you find the sandy, shingly barrier island of Scolt Head Island NNR. The four-mile-long island is particularly important for its birdwatching and is accessed from either Burnham Overy Staithe or Brancaster Staithe. Deepdale Camping & Rooms at Burnham Deepdale is linked by footpath to the trail out to Scolt Head Island from Brancaster Staithe: pitch up yourself or camp out in already-erected safari tents.

Blakeney & Blakeney Point

At the eastern end of Holkham NNR, charming Blakeney is the village from where you can walk (or get a boat trip) to Blakeney NNR and Point, England’s biggest grey seal colony. Much of this reserve is off-limits to protect the seals, but trails run through the wetlands adjacent. Camping at the tranquil, informal Scaldbeck Cottage Campsite, near the departure point for seal-watching boat trips, is tough to trump.

Hunstanton & Around

Eleven miles west of Burnham Overy Staithe, 19th-century beach resort Hunstanton knows how to give its holiday-makers a good time: fairground, promenade, amusement arcades and aquarium are all here, alongside an array of camping and caravan parks. There is camping fairly centrally at Searle’s Leisure Park (camping tradition here dates back to 1934) but the best pitching is northeast of nearby Old Huntanton at the several sites along the edge of Holme Dunes NNR (more empty beaches, more ethereal dunes).
