Sparrow Lake Camp is situated on the southernmost tip of the majestic Canadian Shield. The site is known to have been a campground for bands of the Huron people prior to the European intrusion. It is considered probable that Samuel de Champlain, the first European to explore Huronia, spent a night on this site in the 17th Century.In 1892, what would become the west side of the current property was sold by pioneer Captain Thomas Stanton to Toronto's renowned Massey family to act as their summer resort. The resort sported the main lodge, dining room, and cottages and was only accessible by train and steamer. From the onset, the Masseys used the site as a summer retreat for the Young Men's Bible League of the Central Methodist Church. Today, the property is a thriving summer camp that also offers overnight tent stays with stunning lake views.

Lovely spot right by the River on Paul's land. My friend and I pitched our tents on site #2 and had plenty of space to enjoy while also being completely seperated from the other sites.
This space offers the ease of car camping with the feel of backcountry - aside from the noise of cars near by (which didnt not bother us in the slightest, especially when sleeping at night)
I would love to stay here again and am so thankful that Paul has created this space to share with others.

I had a lovely stay! Renee was kind (even though I mistook her for another camper!) and understanding, and the place was exactly what I was looking for for this visit: quiet and all to myself! The washrooms were clean and spacious, the crickets and birdsong and crackling fire were the only company I needed. I would absolutely return for another visit.

Lisa's property was amazing! Lots of room, beautiful view of everything. Saw deer every day! Loved the outhouse, we are used to privies at Algonquin but the outhouse was way better - especially with the rain we had. She was great with communication and even checked to make sure we were ok after a big gusty windy rainy period of time. We will definitely be back! Thanks so much Lisa.

This was one of our favourite Hipcamps. The lake was busier than we are used to but it was a long weekend so totally expected. We appreciated the private feel of the campsite being nestled in our little corner and we customized the site with tarp shelters and a hammock to lay about in the afternoons. The night sky was gorgeous with the moon and the sound of waves to keep us company. One should keep in mind that there are elevation changes at the site that could prove challenging for some. I was able to portage our canoe down to the water and back up to our vehicle but the pitch through the trees and down to the beach could prove tricky. Overall, we liked the secluded, civilized-rustic feel of the space: not Crown Land but sounds of the forest gave it a wild feel.

Sheila’s place is a little slice of heaven. I wanted to camp alone but as a single female, I needed to feel safe and this was the place! You are right on the water with an abundance of paddling opportunities if you want. Beautiful dock to have morning coffee and a dip all to yourself. Quite private and peaceful. There are other cottages around but not right next to you like a campground and the nights were quiet. You are only awoken by the sounds of owls and loons not loud campers next to you. There is a cute clean outhouse and a fire pit. There is a walk up to where your car is parked but it didn’t bother me as the only time I had to go up and down was set up and tear down. Sheila is lovely and I highly recommend if you are looking for a beautiful spot to yourself on the water. Thank you Sheila!

Walking through the forest heading to the campsite, a beautiful view by the lake, loons calling, peaceful and quiet at night. The lake is weedy still went swimming, hubby enjoyed fishing.
The lady who met us was so nice she showed me the way to our campsite and brought firewood, we missed the complimentary canoe hopefully next year we will have one, aside from that no complain.
Definitely we be back.

My friend and I had a great holiday tent camping at Sheila's property for 4 nights! Everything was as described in the listing. Be prepared for a bit of a walk down the hill to the river from where you park. We didn't have any issues with anything :) Sheila is very friendly and kind.

Where to go
Mara Provincial Park
Just 10 minutes’ drive outside Orillia, Mara Point features a beautiful, spacious beach that’s uncrowded during the week. More than 100 campsites offer both RV and tent camping, and all RV sites are set on one side of the campground away from tent campers. The designated beach swimming area is open from mid-June through Labour Day (the first Monday in September).
Highway 11
Campers traveling north from Barrie along Highway 11 will find welcoming family campgrounds right off the highway, some with swimming pools, hot tubs, or playgrounds. Most campgrounds have both RV and tent camping sites, plus outdoor facilities.
Black River
East of Lake Couchiching on Simcoe County Road 169, Black River Wilderness Park is off the beaten path and away from the bustle of Lake Simcoe. There are lots of choices for campers here, ranging from a no-frills tent site to an RV site, a rustic cabin, a tipi, or a yurt.
When to go
Most campgrounds are open from May through October, and bookings outside that range may be hard to come by. Many private campgrounds rent campsites by the season to RV owners—commuter campers who live in Toronto and generally drive up on weekends. It might be hard to book short-term summer camping for this reason. But tent campers should be able to find midweek availability most of the time, while weekends will need to be booked in advance.
Know before you go
- Several parks and playgrounds around Orillia offer a variety of places for kids to play, and there’s a large, sandy beach on the shores of Lake Couchiching.
- You can drive across “the Narrows,” which connects Lake Simcoe to Lake Couchiching, which makes the eastern shores of both lakes easily accessible.
- Continue north on Highway 11 past Orillia for another 30 minutes and you’ll arrive at Lake Muskoka and Ontario’s premiere cottage region.
- Orillia is in Ontario’s snow belt and there are ski resorts nearby, the closest being Mt. St. Louis Moonstone. Unfortunately, most campgrounds are closed in winter.
