Our family lives on a 100-acre farm, you'll drive past our residence on your way in, park and have a short 150' walk across the lawn and past our veggie garden to your stay. Looking out from our bunkie you'll be treated with a view of acres and acres of farmland, the next closest neighbours are some cows about a kilometre away. Step into our bunkie and enjoy a night in one of the cozy pillow-top queen beds.Beside The Bluebird Bunkie, you will find a detached bathhouse, which hosts a composting toilet, vanity and private outdoor shower under the trees (vanity and outdoor shower are only in warmer months (roughly end of May to mid-October weather permitting).In the cooler months, water can be accessed by a water hydrant, beside the bunkie. PLEASE NOTE AS OF NOV 29, 2021 WATER WILL BE COMPLETELY SHUT OFF FOR THE WINTER, water will be available in spring 2022. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN WATER. There is a fire pit available for your use and all the necessary items to begin a fire in the pit. Inside there is a small mini-fridge, kettle and french press. Plates, cups and cutlery will be provided which can be washed prior to leaving.While visiting the area take in the sights and sounds of historic Elora (5 minutes away), Fergus (10 minutes) and St. Jacob's (25 minutes), all are unique and wonderful towns to enjoy and explore.We have young children and ask that you call or text with any questions or concerns prior to coming to the house, we in turn will do the same before approaching the bunkie.We ask that you please refrain from inviting friends, etc. to our property while you are here. We also ask that you be mindful and respectful of your surroundings and treat our bunkie and property as you would your own (if not better!).This is a pet-free/smoke-free location.As this is a working farm you may (very occasionally), during your stay enjoy seeing tractors and other farm equipment coming and going, please be sure to give a wave! We are always open to questions about what we are growing on our farm- please don’t hesitate to ask!As the weather gets cooler the outdoor vanity/shower will be closed, water is still available at a water hydrant right beside the bunkie for washing etc. While the water is safe to drink, we still recommend bringing your own drinking water.

There is a great swimming quarry in St. Marys which is just 17 km away. There are two grocery stores in St. Marys. Lakeside Resort is 7 km away and is a good place to take small children swimming. There is additional hiking at Wildwood Lake Conservation Area and Harrington Mill Pond Conservation Area. Both just North of us. Canoes can be rented at Wildwood. We are a 5 minute drive away from Happy Hills Resort where you can buy ice. The closest general store, Embro Food Market where you can buy ice and food 7 days a week is in Embro which is 14 km away. Lake Huron which has great beaches is about a 55 minute drive away.

The Pinecone

Come to the Pinecone to completely relax and disconnect (seriously you will because there is no cell service!). During Summer and much of Spring and Fall, you should be able to drive up to the cabin. Unless your vehicle has especially low clearance. The road/path out to the bunkie started as a well-made tractor path that has held up well over the years but has some rocks and bumps. Once through the gate it’s only a 1-minute drive to where you will park. This road may be a bit muddy! If you are looking for a Winter Bunkie getaway, we would be happy to host you; please note the following: - If there has been a lot of snow the private road from the street to the Bunkie is not plowed. Depending on the type of vehicle you are driving, you may have to park at the gate entrance and walk in (4-5min walk) to get to the Bunkie. - There is a mini wood fireplace in the Bunkie for sleeping but depending on the temperature outside and/or the wind it still may be a little chilly. - There is lots of free wood available for an outside fire but we are sometimes low on small pieces to start fire or use for the mini fireplace. You can bring in your own extra kindling or bring own saw/axe to chop. - Bring your own extra blankets. DETAILS: Sleeping loft accessible by ladder comfortably sleeps 2. You'll have an outdoor fire pit, picnic table and 2 grills (we have lots of wood but you can bring your own charcoal for cooking). Enjoy watching the starts at night by the fire and visits from the abundant wildlife. There is 1 queen size bed in the loft for sleeping which is accessible by ladder. You will melt into the pillow-top mattress, luscious linens and don’t want to wake up heavenly pillows. There is porta potty outhouse that is cleaned, bright and easy to access. There are hanging solar lights that can be turned on as needed. There isn't running water in the bunkie but we are happy to provide you with as much well water that you would like, for cooking/cleaning. Do not drink from well unless you bring your own filtration system. No shower space but sponge/cloth bathing possible. There is a small table for 2 inside the bunkie or you can prep food and eat outside on the picnic table. A small fridge cooler is available to store any perishable food you may have. Bring your own ice. The bunkie has solar lighting for the evenings. If you don’t want to find your own firewood in the forest you can pick it up from locals on your way in for $5/bundle (see stands at the end of driveways). It is a big chunk of land but you can't really get 'lost' on it for any significant period of time. We are bounded by roads so eventually you will find your way. But, if you aren't experienced in the woods you may want to keep your wandering short, to start, as you get familiar with the land. Dog friendly!! Overview

When Wayne Gretzky was born here in 1961, nobody knew he would make his whole city famous. Now, both area buildings and streets bear his name. But there’s more to Brantford than #99. Home to the Bell Homestead—where Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone—here you can dial in all sorts of urban outdoor adventures. Buy or rent a tube and take a float down the Grand River, a lazy, all-ages ride that will fill a whole afternoon. Pedal down the local network of trails (70 kilometres) and bikeways (18 kilometres), or hit the dedicated bike park with its jumps, obstacles, and rated routes. Then settle in for a beer—Brantford is home to a number of good microbreweries.

Where to go

Selkirk Provincial Park

Selkirk’s start of the show is Wheeler’s Walk Trail, an easy, 40-minute boardwalk stroll that winds through wetlands and a white pine plantation. You can also paddle along Spring Creek, or take a dip at one of two beaches (a small, sandy one, and a larger, pebbly beach on Lake Erie).

Brant Conservation Area

Set on a big bend of the Grand River just west of town, this park offers riverbank hiking trails and two canoe launches on either side of rushing waters running over Wilkes Dam. It’s a great place for a swim, too, thanks to a huge, 1.25-acre swimming pool.

Elora Gorge

A place where the Grand River narrows and rushes over rapids below 22-metre cliffs, this major attraction offers amazing views just a little more than an hour north of Brantford. Hike along the top to take photos from several overlooks, or splash through the falls below on a kayak or tube.

Turkey Point Provincial Park

One of the closest provincial parks to Brantford, the biggest attraction here is the beach, which stretches for two kilometres along Lake Erie’s Long Point Bay. You can also hike three separate trails (the longest, Fin and Feather, runs along an old hatchery pond) or hit the nearby eco-park for ziplining and axe-throwing.

When to go

One of the warmest parts of Southern Ontario, summers in Brantford tend to be hot and humid—perfect for anyone who wants to paddle or swim. It’s also the busiest season, especially on long weekends (Victoria Day in May, Canada Day on July 1, Civic Holiday in August, and Labour Day in September) when beaches and bike paths fill up. April can be rainy, but the weather warms significantly through May and June. September and October are far quieter and feature beautiful fall colours, as the seasons change. You can expect cold weather between December and March, the primary months for those who love snow.

Know before you go

The city is connected by the 403 freeway to the Queen Elizabeth Way (the QEW), with the latter connecting Toronto with the Niagara region along the Golden Horseshoe. The route gets very busy on Fridays and Sundays, especially in summer.
Brantford is serviced by VIA Rail, a train ride that comes with comfy seats and free wifi.
The neon lights and frozen treats at Dairee Delight have drawn crowds since 1953—people still drive from out of town to grab a cone at this local landmark.
You’ll always have Paris—Ontario. This charming village is just a five-minute drive away.
