The Vales

2 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents58 acres · Pleasantville, NSWe own 58 acres of forest centered on a very old shale pit near Crescent Beach, Nova Scotia. Our long-term mission is to regenerate the landscape, returning all of the property to a forest in time. We hope to establish small camping compounds for family, friends and guests who would like to stay with us and enjoy the amazing scenery of Nova Scotia's beautiful South Shore. Located just below Huey Lake, or property is watered by a stream that flows from the lake, through a series of tiny waterfalls in a gorge, through beautiful pine, maple and oak forest down to a meandering wetland that drains into the Petite Riviere watershed. Beavers are active in the area, and have already begin the process of returning the old quarry to wilderness. Their activities have created deep ponds where once there was a pit dug from the land for the shale that is abundant in this area. The beavers dammed and diverted the stream which has created a pond and wetland system at the lower end of the property. Located near to some of the most beautiful features of Lunenburg County, our property is a 5 minute drive from Crescent Beach, Risser's Beach Provincial Park, and Petite Riviere. Opportunities to cycle, hike, swim, canoe, kayak, surf and sail are all around us.

The Old Canoe

5 sites · Lodging15 acres · Cumberland Bay, NBWelcome to "The Old Canoe" in Cumberland Bay, New Brunswick, Canada! Hipcamp has just named us a runner-up for the best Hipcamp to visit in New Brunswick in 2023, based on last year's bookings, reviews, and ratings! We couldn't be more excited! Are you an outdoor enthusiast who doesn't mind going back to the basics, while enjoying accommodations that are not-so-basic? Our 15-acre shore-front property is located on the Cumberland Bay Stream in Cumberland Bay, New Brunswick, Canada. We purchased it several years ago, and we live here. Over the years, we've enjoyed all it has to offer. In 2021 we decided that we should allow others to enjoy it too! If you're looking for a place to enjoy nature, THIS IS IT! If you're looking for a place to party, this is NOT for you. Here at "The Old Canoe", we currently have two separate rentals listed (Cabin 4 Get-away, and "Main Street" the Bus). We may add a couple more in the future, but our goal is to keep it small and quaint so that our guests have their space and enjoy their privacy. Our rentals provide a unique experience by offering a mix of modern conveniences, along with some off-grid or old fashioned rustic charm. Get back to the basics! Unplug and Unwind! Cell phone service is very poor in this area, however we do provide Free LIMITED Wi-Fi so guests can check messages or emails, etc. These furnished rentals are stocked with just about everything you'll need for a great stay, including fresh bedding, wash cloths and towels, soap, hand sanitizer, and lots more! Basically all you need to bring is your clothes, your food in a cooler, and a camp stove and/or a portable BBQ. Have a campfire in your designated firepit and enjoy roasting marshmallows, making s'mores, and stargazing (seating provided). Firewood is sold on-site. Guests can enjoy FREE use of our Shore, along with FREE use of our canoes and kayaks here (depending on weather conditions and temperatures).  It is not advised to swim at our shore, as it is somewhat muddy/marshy, and shallow. The property consists of a variety of terrain, including cleared areas, forest areas, thickets, paths, maple groves, and the Cumberland Bay Stream which flows through marsh wetlands and empties into Grand Lake (the largest fresh water lake in New Brunswick). It offers an abundance of wildlife, plant life, fresh air, tranquility, relaxation, and has the ideal setting for leisurely water sports such as canoeing, kayaking, row boating, or paddle boarding. Enjoy nature by taking a stroll through the property's small walking paths, or the road leading to the Shore. Relax in one of the hammocks at your unit, and have a nap or read a book. Have a picnic or sit and relax at the Shore, as you take in what nature has to offer. During your stay you may have the opportunity to see various birds such as woodpeckers, wild turkeys, ducks, geese, cranes, or eagles. You may even catch a glimpse of foxes, deer, moose, otters, beavers, frogs, or turtles! Don’t forget your camera! Cumberland Bay is a small community, centrally located between three major New Brunswick cities (Fredericton, Moncton, and Saint John). Cumberland Bay has it's own volunteer Fire Department, churches, and a small public wharf nearby (The Range Wharf). Young's Cove and Waterborough are both a 10 to 15 minute drive away. In Young's Cove, you'll find a convenience / liquor store with gas bar, which is just off the Trans Canada Highway (Route 2). Local take-outs in the area are also often available. In Waterborough, you'll find a local market which features fresh vegetables, strawberries, jams, and breads. Enjoy the Waterborough Wharf, where the general public can swim in Grand Lake or launch watercraft. Small churches are scattered throughout all these little communities. The village of Chipman is also a 10 to 15 minute drive away, where you will find grocery stores, a public library, a drug store, take-outs, churches, the Chipman Marina (on Salmon River), and a convenience / liquor store with gas bar. Click on our separate listings for full descriptions, pictures, availability, or to book your stay! Come to Cumberland Bay and experience this hidden gem of nature!
