"Big Blue" sits atop a lawn covered hill on the shore of the Cobequid Bay. A grove of fir and pine trees offer a sense of woodland solitude and fairies. The energy is magical. You can enjoy a front row seat or amble down over the lawn to sit on the end of the public wharf to watch the tidal bore squeeze into the mouth of the Shubenacadie River. It won't be long and you can marvel at the force of the water as it turns and begins to pour back toward the Bay of Fundy. Walk across the dyke to reach the oldest continually operating general store in North America - Frieze and Roy. Beyond the Wharf, a locally stocked craft shop borders us on the easterly side of the lawn. Next to it you will find Dawson Dowel Picnic Park, a playground and basketball court. On the westerly side of the driveway you there is a marsh area. The remnants of the shipyard where the WD Lawrence was built in the 1800's can be seen poking through the sand on the beach directly in front of the marsh. At low tide you can walk for miles in a westerly direction. Always be Tide Aware! Across the road from the marsh is the residence of WD Lawrence himself. It is a provincial museum. Directly across from Big Blue is a Ducks Unlimited pond. The sound of the geese and ducks can be heard 24 hours a day! There is a path that circumvents most of the pond. Adjacent to the Lawrence House parking lot there is an observatory where you can linger and watch the shenanigans of the occasional muskrat or possibly a beaver. The washrooms are accessed through a side door on the verandah of the main house. There are three showers and three toilets. If happen to be missing your "workout" there is a treadmill and exercise bike available to use. Outdoor fire regulations are strictly adhered to. There is a BBQ available for a small fee. Nestled in the trees on a large deck with the sounds of birds and squirrels all around, this unique structure spans 15 ft across with 14 triangular sides. It holds a double bed, dinning table, rocking chair, 3 burner stove, sink with water, full kitchenette and all the cooking utensils you need. The wood stove keeps the space very warm and cozy and we offer professional massage and reiki. You can walk, ski or bike for hours along a river. Or visit towering gypsum cliffs that host huge bat caves.. Our yurt is tucked away in the trees of our 20 acre wood lot. We provide lots of wood and fire starter for the wood stove but guests should have experience with wood stoves (or be really keen to learn). The stove is big enough to easily heat the whole yurt to cozy comfort but guests should expect to have to keep the stove going in order to keep the space warm and this may mean stoking it once in the night. We provide lots of extra blankets and two pairs of extra slippers for those who forget to bring their own. The solar panel creates enough power to run the lights, charge a cell phone and sometimes a computer but not much more. The space is beautiful, unique and quite dreamy but it is rustic. There is a composting toilet next to the yurt (with hand sanitizer but no sink) and outdoor showers (with hot water) near our farm house. There is a three burner propane cook stove, cooking and dining wares and a small sink for dishes. There are all the utensils that you may need to cook for yourself but there is limited counter space so cooking elaborate meals is possible but could be cumbersome. There is a cooler and we can stock it with ice packs upon request. We supply coffee and a french press,. We also offer massage and reiki to guests for $90 (60 min). Morghain Lee is a massage therapist and Reiki Master and enjoys blending these two body therapies for a holistic healing experience. There is an outdoor fire pit and star gazing chairs. We ask that you only use natural soaps in the shower, the sink, pond or river. We have some Dr Bronners if you like:) Cell reception on the land depends on the provider but most people have weak service (one or two bars). Enough to maintain a phone connection (if you are not walking around too much) but not enough to download videos. Some people have more or less. We do allow pets but we ask for an extra $15 contribution to compensate for the extra cleaning. We also ask that dogs not be on the bed and that they don't chase our chickens or kittens. Gloria was a friendly host and the big grassy yard that she offered was a good place to camp near the Bay of Fundy where you could watch the tides come and go.. There’s a nice walking trail from her place to the village of Maitland where we got a very decent dinner at a good price. The bathroom facilities were substandard, not clean, but made available whenever we needed it. Overall, it was a decent experience, although perhaps a bit overpriced.

Our family of four enjoyed the solitude this cabin on a small lake offered for a much needed staycation. We enjoying resting in the hammock and the gentle rhythm the decks rocking chair provided. We brought our own, but there are several fishing rods available and ready to use. The kitchen is stocked with everything you need. Looks like there’s going to be some upcoming renovations to the cabin so we can’t wait to see what’s coming up next at Grumpy Bear Hollow!

John was a kind thoughtful host. While I did not have the opportunity to enjoy his site due to unforeseen restrictions with wildfire prevention, he was super accommodating.

Weekend Trip to Loriella Farm

Just wow!!! The hosts are beyond awesome. They have worked very hard to create a unique and awesome space to camp/ relax and they have certainly achieved it. The setting is pure magic and they couldnt be more welcoming, everything you need is there for easy and fun camping. With incredible swimming, mountain biking, hiking, and Bay of Fundy near by its a wonder this place isn't reserved months out in advance. Do your self a favor and go visit this beautiful campsite in a pristine valley. We stumbled across it on our way home from a trip up north, now we have a new favorite spot, we will for sure be back. It truly is about as good as it gets for camping!!

What an amazing location. Gloria is so friendly and accommodating. We parked our 16ft camper on top of the hill and had a wonderful Fundy breeze all night. Sunrise from the dock is a must see. Would highly recommend this hipcamp to all travellers.

I did not want to leave! Incredibly thoughtful touches everywhere (bug spray - which wasn't needed) solar lights with 1 remote to control them all, speaker, fans, so many things to use in the bathroom- too many to list) just know a lot of thought has gone into wondering how best they can be of service to folks. Easy walk in to the site (5-7 min). Lovely screened in porch to sit and listen to birds. Reading in bed is like being in a tree house with huge windows. And vintage stuff everywhere!!! A delight. Order the breakfast. She's a trained chef. Then go to Lunns Mills (she owns that, too) also swim at mickey hill lake. Clear warm water and hardly anyone there. 10 min walk through forest to the lake. Do it! Do it all!!

1 night at Moss Cottage Forest Glamping

We slept one night at Chantelle's and Gary's cottage/pod. It was amazing 😍😍😍 to hear all kind of different birds and we had a beautiful view on the forest. The pod was designed to provide an immersive forest experience for guests and we appreciate it! It was nice to meet Chantelle and Gary. We felt welcomed and at home. We hope to come back for another trip soon 💜.

2 nights at Horse Farm - RV site & Glamping

We stayed for 2 nights my boyfriend and I. We LOVED our stay at the ranch!!! So quiet and peaceful 😇! It was nice to wake up the mornings in our little RV with a beautiful view on the horses and the sheeps 🐴🐑. Alexa was a excellent host with us and she gave us many good suggestions for activities near the neighborhood. Thus, I personally loved to have access to a lovely shower for guests near our RV before going to bed🚿. We recommand this place 😇!

NS provincial park fire ban. Way to ruin camping… off grid ftw. Great, amazingly nice hardworking people, both Mike and Salma. Chantal the horse trainer is amazing with kids and even taught me not to pick at how well a chore is done, rather that it is done at all. Kids loved the cave, and rock climbing. I’d have to say the zip line was both of their highlight at the park. 🥳

Perfect spot and location. Moss Cottage is the kind of place where you can walk in, drop your bags and immediately relax and start your stay. Every detail has been well thought out and provided for - from the kitchen with cooktop and every supply you might need, to the charging station, the local guidebooks and information, and rainy/lazy day books and games. The bed and sofa are very comfortable, the shower towels are plush and the decor and vibe are so warm and inviting. The tall glass windows in the shower and cottage place you in the midst of the forest and birds. This is a serene place that I didn't want to leave - but it's 10 minutes to everything Annapolis Royal has to offer and close to tidal beaches and a provincial parks and lake. Gary and Chantelle are fantastic, helpful and responsive hosts. I've already booked my next stay :)

Where to go

Saint John, New Brunswick

Those arriving via ferry will land in the seaside city of Saint John. Once known as a somewhat gritty, industrial-focused destination, Saint John is fun, vibrant, and filled with travel attractions. A must-visit spot is the Saint John City Market, Canada’s oldest continuing farmers’ market and an ideal location to pick up local delicacies, including smoked fish, blueberries, and maple syrup.

Fundy National Park, New Brunswick

A superb destination for camping, hiking (there are more than 30 trails), golf, cycling, swimming, kayaking, and birdwatching, Fundy National Park is an excellent spot to view the region’s famous tides. When the tides are low, you can see the area’s well-known “flowerpots.” These rusty red stone sea stacks owe their distinctive appearance to the forces of erosion.

Wolfville, Nova Scotia

Wolfville is the gateway to Nova Scotia’s famed wine industry. As part of the Annapolis Valley, Wolfville is a prime growing area and you’ll find ample farmers’ markets, gardens, and—of course—wine. Key names include Benjamin Bridge, Luckett Vineyard, and Domaine de Grand Pré.

Digby, Nova Scotia

This seaside fishing town is where you’ll go to catch the ferry to New Brunswick, but you’ll want to hang around for a few days. The community likes to boast that it has the most delicious sea scallops in the world and seafood restaurants abound. There’s a vibrant arts scene here as well. Renowned Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis lived by Digby for decades and visitors can check out the memorial to her tiny home where she painted thousands of pieces of art.
