Rocky River Play Station is a working bush property on the banks of the Timbarra River, about 20 km / 30 minutes south of Drake Village — an old gold-mining community tucked in the back of NSW Northern Rivers. This is a place for slowing down, sitting on grass, swimming in rivers, watching light change across the hills, and resting amongst the wildlife and our resident cows. Your hosts live further back on the property. We’re close enough to help if needed, but far enough away that you’ll feel properly off-grid. There is no mobile reception, which is part of the magic. This is a leave-no-trace property: - There are no bins — please take all rubbish with you when you leave. - Campfires welcome when there is no fire ban. - Facilities vary by site — please check individual listings carefully and come prepared. Pets may be possible by request. We love visiting animals, but we also protect our local wildlife and grass-powered lawnmowers (the cows), so approval is on a case-by-case basis. Rocky River Play Station is also home to evolving creative projects, small gatherings, and the Brushtales Arts Residency. Come to rest, create, gather — you're welcome.

The Valley Camping is our most remote option, set deep on the property in a wide hidden valley around Tom’s Creek. You’ll need a 4WD (or strong legs and confidence), but you’ll be rewarded with total privacy, freedom to choose your own site, and a true bush experience. Camp on the creek flats or head further into the hills — this is spacious, quiet, and wild. Good to know 🚙 4WD access 🦘 Wildlife neighbours (dingoes, kangaroos, birds) 🐄 Cows may wander through ❌ No facilities at all ❌ Take all rubbish with you 🔥 Campfires welcome when permitted; fallen timber available 🪵 Firewood can be purchased at the main house if needed Best suited to experienced, self-sufficient campers seeking solitude and space. How we host Rocky River Play Station is a living, working bush property. We host in a low-key, respectful way: you’ll have space, privacy, and help if you need it — but this is not a managed campground. Facilities are simple, nature is close, and leave-no-trace is essential. If you enjoy self-sufficiency, quiet nights, wildlife encounters, and places that are still evolving, you’ll feel right at home here.

The River Block... ahh, the road in is an adventure, but once you arrive, you've found an easy-access campsite on the banks of the Timbarra River. Tucked in the east corner of the block is Ferny Grove campsite: closest to the entrance, metres to the gate to the river. To the west is Blackberry Patch campsite: more space to yourself, private gate to the river. Then there's Middle Ground campsite: shaded, and also just a handful of metres to the main gate to the river. All the sites are flat of course, and all have private fire pits. The River Block is fenced. The entrance gate can be close to keep out our curious wandering cows. (Rumour has it, they lick folks' dirty dishes.) It's a rock hop from the river gates, over callistemon-covered granite slab islands, to get to the main swimming spot. The water level varies up and down throughout the year, and there's something new to observe every visit. Venture up and down river to discover your own favourite dipping spots — but be careful! Stay within the boundaries of the property, to give our neighbours their privacy and peace. (Also, bunyips.) Your host Jess lives further back on the property. I'l usuallyl pop by to say hello on arrival. Brushtales Bush Cabin
Brushless Cabin was wonderful, and what a treat to stay here without having to bring all the camping gear. The cabin had everything we needed for our stay and there was no one else in sight. The kids enjoyed watching the cows and peacocks when they came to visit, exploring the property and swimming and tubing in the river across the road. Absolutely gorgeous.

What a hidden gem of a place. We absolutely loved our stay at the cabin, from the moment we arrived we enjoyed every second. It’s such a private, peaceful spot and the scenery and river were simply magnificent. Both kids and adults had a blast spending the whole day in the river. For off-grid campers we were spoiled and appreciated the hot shower, flushing toilet and water for washing up. Jess was lovely and took the time to come and meet us, bringing some lucerne for the cows. We were also lucky enough to have a resident peacock visit who clearly loved his watermelon treat. So sad to leave and we can’t wait to return.

Brushtales Bush Cabin
Really great cabin in an even better location! My partner and I loved our stay in the cabin. There was plenty of space inside with everything you need and we felt very secluded with lots of privacy. There was cows roaming around which you could feed and a beautiful peacock walking about. The property has plenty lots to offer and explore with a walking trail we found and an unbelievable creek which was great for a swim and to explore. Jess was super helpful and friendly too and even checked in on us when a storm rolled through. Would highly recommend!

The views here are stunning. The land to camp on is nice and flat with access to the Rocky River. Colin the steer number 110 is a bit cheeky he'll eat your charcoal from your camp fire in the morning. BYO your everything for an off grid experience and relax.

Brushtales Bush Cabin
Our extended family had a great stay at Brushtales cabin with lovely spots next to the cabin to pitch tents. Having all the facilities of the cabin made camping so easy and comfortable. Its a beautiful spot by the river. The kids loved everything about it and feeding Colin 110, was a highlight. We'd definitely come again. Thanks Jess

it was amazing stay. the kids absolutely loved, first time we camped off-grid so we did come prepared. camp ground was relatively easy to setup but there's a fair amount of cow dung around that some may find off putting. otherwise the river was amazing and shallow enough to walk across with kids but as the name goes - rocky river - full of boulders so watch your step.

Peace and quietness. Took us few hours to get there from Brisbane. It was well worth it. River was great, we all had swim in it. We didn't experience anything negative as such. Will definitely be back again.

It is so quiet and picturesque, the view is amazing. Jess has kept it simple yet everything you need is there. We went gold fossicking down the road for a bit of fun. There is a local shop nearby with the bare necessities at a reasonable price. Loved having a fire place .

Awesome Camping Cabin & Location

You have to try the Brushtales Bush Cabin hosted by Jess to believe it. My son and I planned on camping, but the long range weather forecast predicted ridiculously low temperatures and a chance of showers, so we upgraded to Jess' cabin. Talk about having everything we needed. Hot showers, wood fire, warm beds and everything that the fully kitted out cabin had to offer. We really didn't need to bring anything! I was very disappointed when my son discovered NBN internet access. My son, not so much! 😀 Like others before me, I am already planning a return trip in the near future. Thanks. John.

Thanks so much for our stay, amazing HUGE spot all to ourselves. We weren't lucky enough to meet cow #110 😆 Maybe next time.. We saw some rainbows up in the mountain air and a pelican in the river!!

We had a wonderful stay in the cabin and had friend who camped in a camper on the flat just out the front. Beautiful creek and river, plenty of area to explore and kids to use their imagination. Jess the host is lovely and very helpful. The cabin is cosy but with plenty of room for family’s. We plan visiting again in the future as we lovely it so much. Would highly recommended.

Such a beautiful property. The section we camped was nestled in a valley with the creek in the background. Who couldn't feel anything but relaxed and calm in this setting. The property joined onto the river that would be a very cosy spot in the summer to have a dip with the kids and cool off. Jess was nothing but helpful and hospitable. Went above and beyond. I would recommend this place to anyone needing to get away and switch off and relax.

Great to have a single booking site, no neighbours, site to ourselves, 100 m walk to the river. Friendly cows, tag number 110 visited regularly and enjoyed a good pat.
