Kawalang is nestled on 100 acres of stunning bushland on Wonnarua Country, in the midst of the Watagan Forest in the Lower Hunter Valley. We’re just 1.5 hours from Sydney and Newcastle, and 45 minutes from the Central Coast. Nearby, you’ll find the Yengo Lookout and Rock Platform with remarkable Indigenous art, as well as wineries, horse farms, and the historic villages of Wollombi and Laguna. We grow food organically — from citrus, figs, and quinces to pears, mulberries, elderberries, finger limes, feijoas, garlic, vegetables, and greens — and strive to live sustainably. We keep waste to a minimum by composting food scraps and reducing plastic use. Most of our energy comes from solar panels, while rainwater collected in filtered tanks provides our water supply. An electric car charger is available for visitors to support their journey around the Valley. We live in harmony with the wildlife here — wombats, wallabies, possums, bandicoots, kookaburras, cockatoos, and more. On walks down to the bottom field, you’ll pass striking cliffs and rock formations, and discover a private valley with a meandering creek to explore and enjoy. We are about an hour from an exquisite lookout toward Big Yengo, a sacred mountain as significant to Aboriginal people in this region as Uluru is in Central Australia. For thousands of years, Aboriginal communities have gathered on this mountain. The area offers rock carvings, walking tracks, and campsites to explore. The name Kawalang was gifted to us by Aniwan Gamilaroi Wonnarua Elder Uncle Bill Smith. It means “abundance” in language, acknowledging the spirit of the land and the food and joy it brings. The Studio is a large open space with a fireplace, dining area, sofas and TV (for CDs or USB), queen bed, queen futon, and 2 king single beds as needed, a kitchenette, toilet and sink, stunning shower area adjacent to the sunroom. The is a large deck with dining table, chairs, sofa and hammock...put your feet up, have a snooze, take in the beautiful view, wildlife and conversation. There are games, books and CDs for all ages. A fire pit is available. Wander among the gardens where we grow food organically. We are happy to give you a tour of what's growing. Take a walk down to the bottom field in the valley, down a steep private road and back up through the bush. Explore the many wombat burrows on the valley floor or nestled along the meandering creek bank, experience the bird calls, lyrebirds, maybe a wombat or wallaby moving about, breathe in the magnificent trees and bush. Make your own meals; the kitchenette has all you need. With no cafes nearby, you can relax and we can cook for you with food grown organically at Kawalang. Dinners include a starter, main (salted chicken, nachos with our special sauce, pasta pesto), garden salad, Keith's sourdough bread, orange almond cake or other dessert, teas, coffees. Kawalang marmalades, chutneys, pickled veggies accompany the meal. Drinks are Elderflower 'bubbles', herbal teas from our lemon verbena and lemon-scented tea trees; cappuccinos or other coffees and teas; fresh-squeezed orange juice when oranges in season. $35pp. Breakfast includes fresh eggs, bacon/haloumi/mushrooms/greens, fresh orange juice when in season, Keith's sourdough, coffees, teas...or a stack of pancakes with seasonal fruit, yoghurt/cream, our marmalades, coffees, teas. $25pp. Our homemade chutneys, marmalades, other homemade goodies eg black garlic, salted lemon, teas, dried citrus, Indian Lime Pickle, herb collection (tumeric, garden herbs, garlic salt) are available to purchase for gifts or enjoy back home. Visit the Yengo Lookout and Rock Platform less than an hour away, historic Wollombi, Laguna Village...or just kick back and enjoy being at Kawalang...it's easy to just be here and feel the land.
