Backing on to the Watagans National Park, we have a gorgeous flat creek paddock tucked away behind a beautiful mountain on our essential oil farm. The location is perfect for those wanting to explore the Watagans on two or four wheels. We’re also just down the road from the Great North Walk. The camping area is surrounded by untouched rainforest, perfect for wandering and exploring the rock pools. Whether you’re into the excitement of off-roading or just want a place to escape, this little slice of paradise has something for everyone. All campers need to be self-contained, so please ensure you bring along your camp toilet, and take all waste when you go. Well-behaved four-legged friends welcome also! With the nearest country villages of Paxton and Ellalong just 15 minutes up the road, with their cafes, local pub and general store, you can grab supplies nearby. Or, head into Cessnock, 20km up the dirt road for more essential services. **Please note that the creek and waterhole pictured are reliant on the weather. During drought or extended dry periods the water level may be lower than pictured. Please message for the latest updates. UPDATE - 18th June 2025: We regret to advise that following multiple flooding events our access road and campsites have been severely damaged (ie impassable even by 4wd) and are currently unsafe. As the cost of repairs are significant we cannot provide a rectification date at this stage.

Went away with my wife Joellen Sadler in our caravan for the long weekend camped on thos Hipcamp private property that backs onto the watagans state forest had a fantastic time and the weather was perfect.

Rainforest Retreat
We were originally booked to stay at The Rainforest, however we took one look at the amazing views on offer on the other side of their property and decided to stay. The land was fairly flat and perfectly sized for our two family to set up on. Our hosts Nicole and Brian were just fantastic. From the moment we arrived, they made us feel welcomed as they showed us around and gave us great insight into where we should go and what to do. Also I want to thank Nicole and Brian who kept us updated and reassured during a nearby bushfire which looked closer to us than it was, but that was because of our location, the views of the nearby hills along the valley was so immense, even the fire several kilometres away looked like it was just on the next ridge from us. But our hosts kept popping over to see us and kept us updated with news on what was happening. We had great views of the helicopters and Chinooks fighting the fire. We all had fun staying here and want to come back again for another stay soon.

The Pros: Lovely bushy mountain surrounds for our camp site Lomandra. Owners seem lovely, good communication, happy to allow us to come a couple of hours early before check in. They also towed in a water cube for the kids to splash in on the 36 degree day and brought hem some ice blocks which was very kind. We also met some lovely campers during our stay. The Cons: The website gives the impression of private camp sites but its one open area approx 2000 sqm for 3 camp sites with no privacy for each site, easily hear each other etc. For some this is ok, but its not our style. There were no fresh water swimming holes as indicated by numerous photos just an ephemeral creek line. The site is loaded with Hopping Bull Ants, leeches and ticks. Its also a cattle property and they also bring in ticks... my dog and I copped quite a few tick and leech bites. There was also only one level area for our tent, our friends tent had to be pitched on a downwards slope.

Access a bit hairy for 2x4 towing a camper trailer, particularly after rain as roads were steep and undulating in parts. Made it in with Kia carnival towing jaco swan but had owners take the swan out for us at the completion of the trip - which they did happily.

On arrival Nicole, Brian and the kids were great. Easy to find location, great directions. The site was very clean and tidy with camp-fire locations spreadout over the sites all with wood. Friendly campers nearby but not on top of you. Great little getaway location. Look forward to returning!

A very welcoming camp stay

Rainforest Retreat
Nicole and Brian are two fantastic hosts. We felt welcomed from the moment we arrived. Their property is just amazing. The rainforest section was beautiful but we decided to take advantage of the amazing views on the other side of their property, where every turn of the head was met with stunning vistas of the hills and valley surrounding the campsite. I want to praise both Nicole and Brian, they were willing to help us out with anything we needed that would make our camping trip more comfortable for us. They also made sure we were reassured when a nearby bushfire came close but Brian kept checking in with us to ease our concerns and give us all the information we needed about the direction the fire was travelling in. We want to come back to Rainforest again sometime very soon, and we wish Brian and Nicole well with their new ventures into Hipcamp.

Nicole and Brian have a very pretty place in the world to camp indeed! The camp sites are located between the creek bed and the beautiful escarpment behind and on a warm day would offer a peaceful and shady camp for all kinds of set ups. Thank you Nicole and Brian for having us and we look forward to coming back to do some exploring!
