Close to the Colorado state line along Interstate 25, the small city of Raton—pronounced “Rah-tone”—sits against a scenic backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Whether you’re heading north to Colorado Springs or southwest towards Sante Fe and Albuquerque, Raton has plenty to offer campers. There are several RV parks and private campgrounds in town, which offer tent camping, cozy cabin rentals, and RV sites with full hookups and space for big rigs. Just a 10-minute drive from downtown, Sugarite Canyon State Park is the place to escape from it all, with miles of forested hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails; boating, kayaking, and fishing on the lakes and creeks; and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter. There are two state park campgrounds with 40 developed sites (some with full hookups) and basic facilities that include showers, vault toilets, and running water.
