Thanks for your understanding. Escape the city and experience the tranquility of nature. Sanctuary at Little Sand enables you to disconnect from things and reconnect with people and the environment. Try a slice of glamping life in our 12 x 14 Safari tent or our 16' tipi. Ideal for couples, families and special events.
Our eco-friendly camping experience gives you the opportunity to experience nature without roughing it. Our eco-glamping tents are set up for simple and fresh comfort with real mattresses, cotton linens and minimal furniture. However, at the end of the day, this is still the Northwoods. This may not be for everyone, as there are coyotes that howl at night, owls that hoot, a couple of palliated woodpeckers that stay busy, deer, our resident porcupine that likes to roam around the property, the millions of stars and no major modern facilities. We provide a composting toilet and a solar camping shower. There is a paid hot shower available at the Little Sand Bay Campground 2 miles away. Camping with us means no electricity or running water (we provide drinking water), so come prepared.
We are 2 miles from the beach at Little Sand Bay and 15 minutes away from the town of Bayfield with dining and entertainment opportunities.

It was an unbelievable treat staying out at this sanctuary! Marielena was the sweetest host and she made us feel welcome and right at home. The tent was absolutely stunning, and made for a luxurious cozy glamping stay. The property had incredible variety, from wide open fields where Marielena grows flowers for the local farmers market, to woods with well maintained walking paths that we enjoyed exploring. The location is right by the local town, Bayfield, which has so many wonderful things to do. We enjoyed an incredible cruise of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and visited Marielena at the farmers' market and enjoyed seeing and tasting all the local abundance.
It is truly paradise at this amazing Sanctuary and we can't wait to come back again!
Thank you sanctuary at little sand!
Sanctuary at Little Sand was truly a sanctuary for our little fam! We fully enjoyed our private campsite inside magnificent forest and the comforts provided by our hosts (airy, spacious canvas tent with bed on a big deck; seating and tables; kitchen supplies; toilette; etc.) allowed us to soak in the peaceful simplicity and made camping with our children (3 years and 6 years of age) pure joy. From long paradisiacal beach days on dreamy south shore to fireflies glowing green outside at bedtime with soft breeze blowing through tent windows in the serene quiet of private forest, this unique experience was exactly what we needed. We are grateful to Marielena for sharing her land and her energy and for accommodating our family.
Peaceful and private
My husband and I went here for our anniversary - truly a “peace” of heaven. This is a very secluded camp and well kept up. It was everything that was advertised and Marielena did a great job with instructions on what to bring. Marielena and Luke were welcoming and accommodating. The moon and stars were incredible as well as the owl calls both nights we were there. The birds did a great job serenading us. Very peaceful place to be. It is tick season so that was bothersome, but my husband and I got used to be more careful. We ventured to Bayfield and Washburn to explore and also did some kayaking on Lake Superior.
Marielena and Luke did a great job getting us set up and were wonderful hosts during our stay. We had a few requests and they were super quick to respond. The tent is well equipped, very cozy and I felt safe during my stay during the era of COVID.
I saw the other post about the bugs - yup, there are bugs. You're outside in Northern WI. Luke let us know their bug prevention tools (candles, thermacell) and once we lit all that up, the misquotes were mostly gone. The flies (which actually were not as bad as I expected considering you're out in the middle of nowhere) will die down in the evening. We wore pants around the campsite and hung out at the fire in the evenings. We were lucky to catch a stunning sunset on another area of their property after a little rain thanks to Luke giving us a heads up!
This is a wonderful retreat. The tent is beautifully furnished, the camp bed is ridiculously comfy, and the surroundings are gorgeous. Marielena and her husband are thoughtful and gracious hosts, which shows in the details: handcut flowers from her fields, the solar lamp on the porch, and the first aid kit in the drawer. It was so relaxing to be deep in the wilderness with so many of the usual camping details already taken care of!
My fiancé planned this trip for me for our honeymoon. Our wedding was rescheduled however we were not able to get our money back for the campsite so we decided to keep it and enjoy the experience. However the Glamping experience that we were told about was not what we were given. They were pictures of a nice outdoor shower on the website and we were given a Rubbermaid bucket and a hose with a button that was supposed to heat up from the sun however was freezing the entire time and we ended up having to heat our water on a pot on the fire for hot showers. We also spent another $200 at the closest Walmart that was about 40 minutes away so that we can get enough gear to protect ourselves from tics, mosquitoes and flies. We were not told about the tics nor the flies. We came prepared for the mosquitoes but we’re not told about how bad the tic situation or fly situation was at the campsite. We literally had to tic check ourselves every 2 to 3 hours every single day. The price for the site was waaaaay overpriced for what we were given. We couldn’t even drive to our campsite and had to Trek it. We ended up leaving early because we just wanted to get out. Also due to the weather there should’ve been a heater provided in the tent. Or at least some type of heat source. Also we were left one lantern with no batteries in it, and a light fixture that only lasted 20 minutes with the batteries that were in it. We will not be staying at this campsite again nor will we recommend it to anyone. There should’ve been gravel laid down around the campsite of ticks are that bad and the vegetation should’ve been cut away from the actual tent itself To prevent tics from getting inside better. Gravel or dirt should’ve been laid out around the campsite also for walking because of the amount of ticks at the location. There should’ve been a gravel or dirt pathway to the bathroom and around the campsite and leading to the car itself. After visiting other campsites at other locations around the area and visiting town, we regret our stay at the camp. However it did give us the chance to rough it and we are now able to camp in a little bit more extreme situations than what we planned for this trip. This was supposed to be a Glamping vacation trip and it ended up being more of a deep woods bug infested, cold experience. This site should not be listed as a Glamping site at all whatsoever. This is not a Glamping location and it’s not glamping at all.
Little oasis in the woods
It was private and secluded with everything you need to be comfortable. We enjoyed listening to the woodpeckers and what I think were coyotes making noises. The tent kept us warm n cozy during a thunderstorm too. Shower situation was a new experience for my teen daughter, she's never had to use a hose in a bucket of warm water before, which was good for her to try. Our hosts had plenty of wood for our campfire ready and a big cooler of drinking water (thank you). Even bath towels avail. A couple suggestions I would give to make it even better would be to have a step to get up onto the deck, my sore left knee felt every up and down after a day of kayaking. And maybe cut the brush back away from the tent a bit, the branches that touched the canvas gave the ticks a highway. Another part of nature that was good for a kid to experience tho. Did I mention the mattress was super comfy? I enjoyed our stay.
We LOVED staying with Luke and Marielena! They were great hosts who made sure that we had everything we needed and were great with our three kids. We had severe weather two of the three nights that we stayed and the tent withstood it all (even with many many large trees down on the property)! We would absolutely stay here again!
