Best in Virginia: Finalist
Named one of the best Hipcamps to visit in 2024.
In a remote valley just north of Roanoke VA, along the banks of Craig's Creek, the property includes mature hardwood forest, pasture, and an 1830s log cabin where we live. We love to share this special place with visitors, and have some basic amenities for campers. The campsites are at the edge of a large pasture and just a few steps from the creek and our big swimmin' hole. Totally secluded in a remote valley - barely a house in sight (but our cabin is a short walk through the woods if you need something), no cell service for most providers, but within a short drive of Roanoke and Blacksburg, and countless outdoor recreation opportunities.

Just off the Appalachian tail, five minutes from Dragon's Tooth trailhead and 10 minutes from McAfee's Knob, you'll be able to find plenty of hiking and nature to take in. TONS of killer single-track mountain biking around the area, including some trails on our property. We are very close to the North Mountain trail system, not far from Carvins Cove. These areas also offer amazing swimming and tubing. This area is paradise for road cyclists as well. Our country road is long, scenic, very little traffic, and the grade is almost imperceptible. Lots of similarly scenic back roads in the vicinity, easy to map out a loop according to your preferences.  We are located ~35 minutes from Roanoke and ~45 minutes from Blacksburg. While I provide some bottled water for campers, bringing in your own is always a good idea as I do not offer a way to refill water containers.  About the listing Tucked away at the base of a huge meadow, under an ancient walnut tree, pitch your tent on the edge of a mature hardwood forest floodplain, with sweeping views of the valley, and enjoy the sounds of Craig's Creek flowing just behind you. The creek is filled with lots of bluegills, etc. and some trout, and we're very close to a lot of really great trout streams. We're blessed with a beautiful swimming hole fed by the cool clean creek, which gets to about 6 feet in depth, maybe a 3 minute walk from the campsite.  For meals, we provide a charcoal grill and a grill grate for cooking over a fire. There is also a picnic table at the site.  Well-behaved dogs and other pets are always welcome, but please keep them under close supervision. While you have privacy at your site, expect to run into other campers in common areas or in passing. We like to greet folks when they arrive and show them to their site, and someone is typically here at the house should you need anything. Cozy up by the campfire right on the bank of an exceptionally deep, clear pool in Craig's Creek, nestled in hardwood forest at the base of a huge stone cliff. About the Property Just off the Appalachian tail, five minutes from Dragon's Tooth trailhead and 10 minutes from McAfee's Knob, you'll be able to find plenty of hiking and nature to take in. Swimming or tubing right at your campsite is a great way to spend a summer afternoon. TONS of killer single-track mountain biking around the area, including some trails on our property.  Our valley is paradise for road cyclists as well.  We're located ~35 minutes from downtown Roanoke and ~45 minutes from Blacksburg.  About the listing Along the creek bank next to a large, deep swimming hole underneath a formidable cliff face, pitch your tent or sling your hammock in a beautiful clearing carved out of the mature hardwood forest. In a raised flood plain, the soil is soft and sandy. There's a rock washout just a few feet away where you can park your car for easy access (not accessible in especially wet weather). Views back up through the woods reveal views of the valley and mountain beyond, or venture deeper into the woods to discover native flora and fauna. This campsite is periodically closed during high water events (though if you catch the rains just right, you'll enjoy a tall waterfall cascading into the creek just feet from the site). Well-behaved dogs and other pets are always welcome, but please keep them under close supervision. Campers rave about this spot's natural beauty, especially the creek and swimming hole, which provide both relaxation and fun. The campsites offer privacy and are well-spaced, enhancing the tranquil experience. While most visitors appreciate the clean and quiet environment, some note occasional noise from fellow campers. Overall, it's a favored destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat in nature.
