I am 100% coming back here whenever I get the chance again. The area is awesome and the people are even better. If you're looking for somewhere quiet, where you can also enjoy outdoors time, and feel safe (i.e. traveling alone or with kiddos), I can't stress enough that this place is wonderful. Id advise walking down the path to the river first before attempting the drive, and have to thank Terri times a billion for pulling me out and showing me how to drive my truck properly 😅 Y'all made me feel so safe and welcome and I cant wait to come back. Thank you!

Perfect spot!
This is a perfect campsite. Terri is beyond kind and helpful and this is a very unique spot. I took my five-year-old here for two nights and we never left. Inches from the river we had a blast. We tubed, fished (Smallmouth, croakers, sunny), and cooked over the fire. We saw otters, eagles, snakes, lots of frogs and just had a great time. One of my favorite things is there was no cell service so you really get to disconnect. It was still muddy from the last storm so Terri helped carry our stuff down with her tractor helped bring it back up with her tuck. Other than the other folks camping we did no see or hear anyone for two days. Cant wait to come back soon!

Lovely stay
I rented this campsite with two friends and we had a great stay! It was a last minute plan and Labor Day weekend but Terri was super easy to work with. The site is absolutely beautiful and the stretch of River is wide and perfect for swimming when the water levels are high and sandy for wading if they’re low. With the mud we didn’t drive up and down to it (it’s a steep hill down to the site at the river!) but Terri drove us down in the tractor and picked us up the next day as well - even letting us stay later to play in the river!
Keep in mind this is definitely camping (ex the toilet is a like a lug a loo - bucket with a toilet seat on it) which is just fine - cause the trade off is a set of 2-3 campsites in the quiet forest right by a beautiful stretch of river. Highly recommend!!

Beautiful location! The road is rough coming in as mentioned in other reviews. Great swimming…even for smaller children.

Marshalls Landing on the River
Great spot on the river!
My husband and I camped this site with a group of friends and couldn't have asked for a better spot! We joked with the hosts that we were going to give them bad reviews so we could book it for the rest of the summer! There are 3 separate camps on this property, and we were located at the river spot - which is right on the river, as the pictures show. All of the camps are far enough apart that we could hear others, but not see the sites, unless someone was passing through or in the water nearby. The river is better for wading than swimming - the water was just high enough for us to tether a couple of tubes, and do a little fishing. There was plenty of room at the site for three tents, a central screened gazebo, and a short walk to the toilet area (a screened off bucket, not an enclosed pit toilet, just FYI). The drive down to the site from the check-in point is a beast so 4WD is a must, and when you get there, don't expect wifi. in a pinch you can go back up the hill and catch a signal there, but we just enjoyed the quiet. The hosts were super-friendly and helpful - they have a small store stocked with a few basics for sale (water, ice, snacks, etc.) and they will deliver firewood down to the site for a fee. They were looking into the possibility of getting local meats/dairy/produce at some point as well. We didn't need anything but firewood one night but great to have as an option since the closest stores are about 20 min. away. Hosts are serious about leaving the site clean, so plan to remove or burn all trash, butts, paper, pop tops, etc. All in all a lovely stay and we can't wait to go back! Oh - one more thing - the directions on GPS weren't entirely accurate for the last mile or so of the drive. GPS tells you to stop at a very low house number, but keep going on, and keep bearing right when the road forks. It will eventually dead-end into the parking lot/check-in site. Enjoy it - we did!

Marshalls Landing on the River
its no good, its awful! j/k : )
fantastic hosts, great location, right at the water! reluctant to post something positive, because this is a gem of a primitive site, less than 2 hours from dc. you will need a 4x4 to park at the camp, but the hosts also have a tractor that can traverse the steep/rocky/rooty trail. car parking is available up top, where they have a small store of some supplies for sale (staples like ice, wood, snacks) and they're looking into procuring local meats or produce down the road. they're getting more local connections, so keep checking their site for updates. they were very communicative, & totally helpful in any need, even re-setting the privy location! zero internet/wifi/cell service at the campsite, & limited connection at the top of the hill, so don't plan on it being a working vacation! food lion (& a wal-mart) is 15-20min. away, gas/ice/convenience stores are closer. follow the hosts directions, as gps isn't completely accurate. water isn't quite deep enough for kayaking/canoing, but a tube fer sittin' & coolin' yer jets is perfect.

We stayed at the pond site. Hosts were fantastic, very welcoming and helpful. Not buggy, found a shady side of the pond to camp on. 30 mins from Thornton gap entrance. Stars here are excellent. Plenty of fallen limbs for kindling, but actual logs are a little harder to find. A little pricey for what you get, but I'd rather overpay and be satisfied than bargain shop and be disappointed. Overall I'd recommend this land and the pond site is pretty nice!

Marshalls Landing on the River
A Hidden Gem!
Our stay at Marshalls Landing on the River was just the ticket for a quick getaway over the July 4th weekend. It's a beautiful property situated just up the hill from a wooded stretch of the Rappahannock River, where you can easily forget that you're just 90 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of DC. We stayed at the riverfront site, where hosts Terri and Leslie made us feel right at home.
The river was fairly low during our stay, but still deep enough in spots for us to fish and float our way through the weekend. The site is broad and sunlit during the day, but there are plenty of trees nearby for shade. In the evenings during our stay, we were treated to a cacophony of frogs chirping at dusk and throughout most of the evening. Fishing the river yielded some nice Fallfish and Bass action, mostly in deeper holes both upstream and downstream. The river in that area is very traversable when it is low, so just slap on a pair of river shoes and hike your way up or down.
Pro Tip 1: The road from the camp store at the top of the hill - where you can buy wood, water, ice and several other items - to the riverfront is quite rugged. It can be fun for 4x4's, but is probably too much for a sedan. My Subaru Forester AWD made it down and back without a hitch. Not to worry, though - your gracious hosts are prepared to shuttle your gear to the site if necessary.
Pro Tip 2: There are no toilet facilities on site. However, there are a host of solutions available online to prepare you for this, such as the "Luggable Loo" or other camp toilet solutions. There are also no tables or benches at the site, so prepare for that, as well.
Pro Tip 3: Come prepared to relax and enjoy a lovely spot on the Rappahannock that we would honestly prefer to keep a secret - and please do your part to leave the site better than you found it.

This was our first time using Hipcamp. The campsite by the river was great! The hosts shuttled our stuff down to the bottom of the river and we also bought firewood from them. They took only cash so bring cash with you. We had to go to 4 different gas stations to find one with a working ATM.
Other than that, I strongly recommend this campsite. The water was refreshing, their house was accessible in any type of car, and the area was beautiful.

Great campsite - private and right next to the river. Drive to campsite is down a very rough half mile road - so bring an off roading SUV or be prepared to carry your stuff to campsite. Will definitely visit again!

Marshalls Landing on the River
My wife and I camped along the river. Very beautiful area. Lots of wildlife. Turkeys, birds, frogs, and butterflies. Due to the heavy rains on our first night we were unable to use the river due to the high water during our stay. Great spot for a hot summer day due to the water activities that would be available.
