This is the best place to camp and stay! Mike is the absolute best host and honestly his hospitality, humor, this community and the views made my entire 3 month road trip. I WILL be back next year. Its as private or as social as you want it there are beautiful sunsets, great people to meet, and its so close to the National Park. I am a solo female camper and I never felt safer than being here. 100/10 stars if I could.

Temple of Bird was an excellent spot for camping. Beautiful views, comfortable property with good amenities (great shower) and kitchen. Also, Mike is an amazing host with great stories and recs. Would highly recommend!!!

Mike is the host and obviously a loved member of his community in Terlingua. We come to Terlingua often and chose Temple of the Bird for this particular trip because we wanted to spend more time with the community and spirit of the town and we totally nailed it with this place! Lots of good vibes and friendly folks. We watched him put together an impromptu brunch with a band, potluck, and the amazing hang out setting of the Temple of the Bird in a matter of 24 hours. What’s best, is when we were done, we were able to drive the top of our hill where our campsite, perfectly secluded from the action.
The bathrooms are hilarious (filled with joke signs), clean, comfortable, and hot showers! We were sure to not dilly dally since it’s the desert and the water is not ours, but it sure was nice having access to a hot shower at a big bend campsite!
The kitchen is stocked with all you need, come and go as you please. And the common area was really great to have morning coffee, afternoon drinks, and night time stargazing.
A totally win! So glad we came.

Can’t say enough good things about our time at Temple of the Bird. If you value good music, hearing funny stories, making new friends, and a really really really cool view with your morning coffee this is the spot for you.

Had a great time at Mike's place. The common area was a lot of fun!!!! Really cool spot and we can't wait to get back, everyone was a joy and everything was easy and simple. Views are amazing, location is perfect for Turlingua, did little day trips from Mike's place. They have little RV pads with electric hook ups! We'll be back hopefully soon!!! Thanks Mike, till next time!? We car camped and had amazing sunrise and sunsets! The big yurt/tents look very nice as well!! Might try one of those next time. Gumbo was delicious!!

This is, far and away, the best Hipcamp experience I’ve had in my 4 years using the app.
The grounds are incredible—not only do you have a magnificent view of the desert, the Chisos, and golden sunsets/sunrises, but you also get access to the Temple’s amenities, which were a welcome relief after months on the road. The entire property is a funky, inspired oasis—spending a week there alone was worth the price.
But in addition to all that, you also get the generosity and graciousness of Mike, an incredible host and guide to the one-of-kind community that is Terlingua. (And you also get the community gatherings he organizes at the Temple’s BYO bar, which for us included a BBQ and a gumbo cook off. It was an awesome way to meet some locals, some other travelers, and get some great food.)
Staying here is a no-brainer if you’re headed to Big Bend, checking out Terlingua, or just looking to hang in the desert for a while. Returning here isn’t even close to being convenient for us, but I imagine we’ll still find our way back.

I stayed over the weekend with a friend (M27, M32) TTOTB was a fantastic vibe- home comforts in a desert setting. The host, Mike- went out of his way to make sure we had a great time both at camp as well as some great bars in the nearby town. Amazing stars at night, and most weeks there is usually something going on for those who like a social vibe. We stayed in the container, no complaints at all. Will be coming back one day!

We rented the group camp site at the top of the temple of the bird and we can’t recommend it enough. Mike was super cool and helped us host our songwriter nights in his wonderful clubhouse. Chill place with great folks and accommodations. Thanks Mike!

Nice cozy, cool, getaway from the heat. It’s a blast to step out the door and be surrounded by music and amazing people and kind hosts. Showers and shared kitchen are clean and wonderfully functional. Fabulously fun location!

We had a nonstop wonderful stay at Mike’s “Temple of the Bird”. We were there as part of the Terlingua Music Bash so there were lots of people around but the communal kitchen and bathrooms stayed clean and well supplied. The bathrooms are also incredibly beautiful with large stone showers and plenty of entertaining signs in the stalls. The multiple common areas are versatile and accommodating. Every space on the property has been lovingly “accessorized”. Willy and the bird rule..
We stayed in a container room. It far exceeded our expectations. It was very well put together and we could see the sunrise over the mountains from our windows. The bed was comfortable and the room was surprisingly spacious. The AC worked!
All of this in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Five stars for Mike!

Great place to camp in the desert! I had a spot on top of the hill and I was able to see the Marfa Lights from there each night! Mike has the place decorated real cool and the bathrooms are nice and clean and he is a great host! Also just 15 minutes to the entrance of Big Bend! Would definitely camp here again😃💕

Literally can’t say enough good things about this place! Temple of the Bird is for free spirits who want to meet interesting people and play/listen to music and watch the sunset. Shaded area to hang out during the heat of the day, and stargazing on the patio at night. A shared kitchen to use, gorgeous bathrooms, and the friendliest host on planet Earth!

Staying at the Temple of the Bird is a truly singular experience. The beauty of the landscape is on full display and you’re only a stones throw away from all the fun places in the ghost town.
The left wing room is in a repurposed cargo container and has all the luxuries you should expect smack in the middle of the desert. A/C, comfortable Queen size bed, sitting area, armoire, cute little porch sitting area. I highly recommend it. This will be where I will try to stay every time I visit Terlingua.

I could not recommend this place enough! Mike goes above and beyond for his guests and you can tell the whole space is such a passion project. Mike’s love for Terlingua made me love Terlingua and I can’t wait to come back. If you’re looking for beautiful views in a space that was built to encourage community you’re gonna wanna stop in at the Temple of the Bird.

Camping at Temple of the Bird was amazing with its personality and charm. It has amazing amenities with a kitchen, clean bathrooms, shaded common space. The host Mike was marvelous, lending a hand and giving us recommendations around the area. Grate location and a great place to stay!

Mike is a wonderful host! He did everything he could to accommodate us and the local people were very friendly and gave good advice for what to do in town and in Big Bend. Definitely reccomend staying more than one night here!

Stayed one night. Was supposed to tent camp but Mike offered us a room as storms were coming in again tonight. This place is absolutely amazing!!! He has it all literally!!! If you want to pitch a tent, park your rv or van, rent a room or a bed it's here!! He has flushing toilets and showers. He has a public kitchen to use and water on hand. There is a bar and stage to hang out and gather and play music. I would not recommend for kids as this is definitely a place for adults only. But the quiet and views pay for it all.
