1100 acres of gorgeous natural land at the headwaters of the Medina River. Crystal clear and clean spring feed water. Fourth-generation family owners. Remote camping. Very private with plenty of varied terrain for hiking swimming, tubing, biking or just hanging out in a hammock enjoying the breeze and peace and quiet. About 2 miles as a crow flies from Lost Maples State Park. You drive through a 13,000-acre ranch to get to us. We are at the end of a dead-end road with one way in and one way out. NO FISHING As our topo map shows we have a wide variety of terrain ranging from steep cliffs with huge views to shady canyons. The river cuts through the middle of the place and is surrounded by four hills that each have their unique characteristics ranging from flat oak-covered to rocky steep ridges. I guarantee you will find beauty all around. We do have a couple of fun areas to try your 4-wheel drive out. Please dont make your own....stay on trails. There are plenty of places to swim. When the Ladder is reserved, you may not swim there. Please be respectful. We have 1.5 miles of both sides of the river so plenty of places to swim. It varies a lot in depth and width over the ranch. Every camp spot has access to all the swimming holes except the ladder when it is booked. The main swimming holes are-- 1. Below the Green Cabin 2. This is an intimate spot on a large pond area of the river down from the road. When I was growing up my parents threw epic keg parties at this spot. I followed suit in college and beyond….There was tons of fun while everyone floated on tubes and had the occasional moss fight. One side is mossy bottom and the other rock. Perfect for swimming and a 150 foot zip line across the river is in the works. For camping It’s the ideal romantic spot with a canoe thrown in to boot. Drive along the bank to your spot. You will be camping on the river bank. Adventurous campers can use the canoe to pack into a spot across the pond in between two gigantic cypress trees. When you book here the entire “pond” is yours for your privacy. See video a camper did on the site. The Ladder Swimming Hole

Gorgeous Spring-fed swimming/bathing hole. This location is what I think is the best swimming on the place. Its my favorite place to take a bath. There are tons of fish and it is like an aquarium. They hear my Kubota and come to the bank waiting for me to feed them kernel corn and the bass love their worms. Absolutely no fishing at this hole. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDF0ViBIbOY

The Ridge

The Ridge is the highest spot on the ranch at 2400 feet. It has the most spectacular view as well. At the edge of a sheer 250 drop off you need to be careful taking in the view! You have an unobstructed view of the sky and the horizon. You wont see any lights out here!! I think the Ridge is one of our most private spots. It is a mile off the main ranch road on a pasture road. Small fires are ok as long as it is not too windy. There are a couple of well placed Live Oaks on the edge which are perfect for a hammock. Please note--the Ridge is a must-see for any camper. If you book the ridge you need to be ok with allowing other campers to make a one-time short visit to check out the view. You may have access to the river for swimming except in reserved designated camp sites.

The Teepee

My brothers favorite spot to camp with his kids. Very shady and cool and you are lulled in relaxation by the sound of the waterfall below. Nestled at the base of a steep hill on one side and the river on the other shaded by a thick canopy of trees. You will have your own private part of the river to enjoy during your stay.

The Laf undefined is anywhere on the ranch that is not a defined campsite. Most spots would be on hilltops in open areas. There is plenty of land for privacy and finding a flat spot for a tent and if you have a rig with camper top that would be even better. Some would be suitable for small RV's. You have swimming access to any unbooked campsite on the river…eg ladder, big pond, green cabin plus any other undefined swimming hole.

The Big Pond Big Camping Spot

A friend of the family-Ken-has a knack for discovering great campsites so it is time to honor him. This is a fantastic cozy site off the road among beautiful old growth cedar trees so there is plenty of shade. It is a flat nice ground for a tent and you can hear the water from nearby waterfalls.

The Big Spring

The Big Spring is at the far back of the place. It is very isolated and about a mile off the main road. There are numerous places to camp ranging from in an open field for RV's to farther back for tents and camping rigs but no trailers. Low-clearance vehicles would be best as you are winding through and under huge hardwood trees. The Piece de resistance is the Big Spring itself. It is not easy to find or get to, but it is a strong running spring coming out of the side of the mountain into a small pool before the water goes underground to feed the lower river. You access it by descending a natural rock staircase.

Rough Ridge

The demand for the Ridge has been so great we are creating another campsite on the opposite side! Both Ridge sites will have total privacy and a great view. The difference is the Rough Ridge will be accessed via the Ridge Challenge Trail and you will need a 4x4 and a little nerve. There is currently a fire ring, but no picnic table. There is room for a tent and a rig with a rooftop tent would be perfect. Same sheer 250 drop off you need to be careful taking in the view! You have an unobstructed view of the sky and the horizon. You wont see any lights out here!! Please note-If you book the ridge you have access to the river for swimming except in reserved designated camp sites. Thanks Fritz 210-385-8766

The Green Cabin

The Green Cabin is a rustic one-room cabin with a stove, refrigerator, bed frames with clean new mattresses, and wood stove for heat. It has running water both hot and cold and a very cool outdoor shower!! Outside is a fire pit and bbq. It has the next best thing to a flush toilet… it’s own outhouse. (6-9 update--the outhouse is closed until further notice due to someone putting their trash in the hole) The cabin is at the base of a steep hill on one side and down the hill is your own private swimming hole. It is situated on the prettiest, shadiest, largest flat spot on the ranch. You have the option of staying in the cabin or just having plenty of space for campers and tents. Please note you need to bring your own plates, glasses and utensils. Don’t forget the garbage bags!

The Big Pond Big Camping Spot
LAF Ranch felt like a little hidden gem of Texas. My wife and I ventured out here for a night. We had planned to go to Lost Maples to see the fall colors but decided not to go after seeing the beautiful bald cypress trees by the creek at LAF Ranch. The colors were stunning and the weather was beautiful, we had the whole Big Open campsite to ourselves so it felt like our own little oasis. Thanks to Fritz for providing access to such a wonderful location, and for being such a pleasant host! We’ll definitely be back!

Rough Ridge
The drive to the ranch and onto to the ranch was beautiful and scenic. . My kids love the tent camping. We met Fritz at his Cabin to go over a few rules and regulations, a very nice gentleman. My family and I would definitely recommend LAF ranch.

Big Pond Tent Site
So far my favorite tent camping spot within 2 hours of San Antonio, TX. Keep in mind this is a remote location. Don't expect to plug in an address into your phone and follow the route - there is no cell service/phone GPS, but Fritz's written instructions and maps are enough to get you there. Plan ahead of time and you shouldn't have any problems. There are several shallow rivers that you must cross to get to the campsite. I would recommend an SUV, truck, or cross trekking vehicle; we took a Subaru Outback and had no issues whatsoever. The campsite is amazing. It's perched right next to the water, with a fire pit and plenty of flat ground to place a large tent. Beautiful views, and there is a canoe to take on the water. There is no light pollution, and it was silent at nighttime. It is the perfect place to relax, unplug, and unwind. There is no running water, electricity, or bathrooms, so plan accordingly. My wife, dog, and I loved how remote/quiet this place was. Our only regret is not staying more than one night!

This place has a special place in my heart. Such an amazing adventure just getting to the ranch. Some of the most beautiful/ ethereal views. Fritz is an amazing host. This is an untouched raw nature property with not a light in sight other than billions of stars at night.

I loved camping on Fritz's land. It is a very beautiful location and he is a very friendly host. The campsites are very secluded and private. He is also very helpful as he and his friend lent a hand when had mechanical issues. Will absolutely go back and I recommend this hipcamp.

This place is just amazing. If you appreciate true camping (no bathroom, electricity , etc) this place is for you. The ranch is isolated, well kept, and just beautiful. Unlike any other place I’ve stayed before. Will definitely be back to check out the other campsites.

LAF Ranch is a truly hidden gem, I will definitely be back. Beautiful scenery both day and night. Fritz and his family were wonderful hosts. Plenty of space to give you complete privacy from other campers.

I’m definitely going to make LAF Ranch at least an annual trip. This place really shows off the rugged beauty of the Texas hill country. The host, Fritz, is a really nice guy and takes great care of his land (hopefully you’ll do the same as there aren’t many places available quite like this one). Can’t wait to visit again!

The Green Cabin
This place was great. It’s very secluded so get ready to get away. Bring most everything you need, you get a/c in the cabins, a fridge, stove, and out house. There are some basic cookware items but not a ton. The sky is impeccable at night, everything is quiet, and the fire wood is abundant. No fish which kinda stinks but the water is nice on a hot day. We only tried the water near our green cabin to swim with the dogs and it was low it seemed. Great place with dogs as they can be off leash. There are hogs around the area so be mindful at night. 7/10 for sure if you are looking to unplug.

The ranch is absolutely stunning, like stepping into another world surrounded by beautiful trees, creeks, and rolling hills. Just be sure to bring a capable vehicle, as there are several creek crossings that can get fairly deep. I made it through just fine in a Nissan Rogue Rock Creek AWD, but the terrain can be pretty rough in spots, so come prepared. We stayed during the July 4th floods, and Fritz went above and beyond to ensure our safety. He even moved us to his large cabin because of the severe weather, which we truly appreciated. He’s an incredibly kind and thoughtful host who clearly cares about his guests. Highly recommend this place but keep in mind, you’ll be about 9 miles from the nearest paved road, so plan accordingly. Thanks again, Fritz, for your generosity!

The first night was great ! Beautiful little spot. Unfortunately the Flash Floods did result in us evacuating to the top of the hill where we were safe but not at all enjoying our time . Its not the hosts fault that this weather disaster happened, and he offered us dry towels/ sheets. If we ran out of food while being stuck, he offered to help. He checked on everyone throughout the day and we really did appreciate that. Thankfully we did get out and got home safe. Would definitely go back under different circumstances. It really is a nice spot.

I loved camping out on Fritz’s land! The landscape is so beautiful and it was so peaceful out there. So many different species of birds to hear and see. The water is crystal clear and refreshing to take a dip in! Definitely planning on going back out there in the future!

Heaven on earth! Everything was so wonderful about my stay. Driving in, was an amazing adventure to start the trip. I had no issues with my 2wd coupe and there are a few times you cross over a bit of water. Fritz was an amazing host! I added burgers on to my trip so I didn't have to cook at night and he went above and beyond to make sure my stay was pleasant and comfortable. Thank you so much Fritz. Staying at the big pond site was unreal! Just me and my dog there and as a single female I would like to note, we felt so safe out there. We hiked around the huge property during the day and saw some of the other camp spots that are amazing too (I'm quite partial to big pond though) great hiking, and relaxing. It rained both nights which cooled the nights off. There was no flooding issues and we stayed dry in our tent (but make sure to have a rain fly or tarps just in case!) I cannot wait to visit again. It was truly a slice of heaven for me and my pup.

“Fritz’s land is such a wonderful experience. Just the drive to the cabin gave us a surreal overlanding feel with fun river crossings—perfect even for beginners. The kids loved every bit of the trip. While we chose the cabin for access to hot water and power, we all ended up tent camping and had an awesome time. The land, the people, and the animals were all amazing. We can’t wait to visit again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and memorable getaway.

This ranch is beautiful! Fritz was very hospitable the whole stay. He went out of his way to be sure we were good during some weather. The spots were both stunning and very private. We stayed with 2 young children and they had a blast. We definitely reccomend staying here!

We had a great time camping at Fritz’s ranch! The Ridge is an awesome site. It’s perfect for sunrise, sunsets and stargazing. It was a nice flat area with a large fire ring and two perfect trees for hanging the hammock. It’s the perfect place if you’re looking for beauty and seclusion. 10/10 would recommend.

Fantastic camping on some of the most beautiful land in Texas - this place seriously rivals all Texas state parks. Beautiful topography combined with natural springs and diverse wildlife make this ranch a must see. We saw quail, turkey, whitetail, red stag (including an albino), javelina, horned frog, bass, sunfish, etc. The landowner and his assistant were extremely helpful when it came to booking the reservations, driving directions and navigating the property. Also, there are no cattle on the property, which is nice when it comes to walking around (no landmines to avoid).

The Big Pond Big Camping Spot
We had a full group out this weekend and this spot did not disappoint! The views throughout the property were amazing and the drive in was a site to behold. Fritz and Ken were extremely hospitable and welcoming. The property is beautiful. Looking forward to taking my wife out later this year.

The Ridge
My buddy and I decided to test out our new calling set ups at LAF. It was a decent drive but worth it. The owner is very nice and informative. The description was accurate, you cannot beat the views from the ridge. We spent time checking out each campsite, each offer a cool and unique experience. Best part besides the views, no cell service. Unplug from everyday life and enjoy nature.
