All the previous great reviews are accurate, this is a beautiful spot and I’m grateful to our host Yvonne for making it available for us all to enjoy.
We were two adults and three dogs, and the site was amazing for us but would also be perfect for larger groups. Coming in, I was a little nervous whether it would just be kind of open farmland, but the site is somehow both spacious and cozy. We had the pond in front with view of the farms, wildflower-laden brush to the right, brush and hills to our back, and a soy bean field to our left. At the beginning of October, the goldenrod and asters gave us a stunning show.
The dogs had an amazing time swimming and running around the open spaces, and the close end of the pond was shallow enough for them to also run back and forth in the shallow water.
The space was incredibly private and we never saw another person the entire time. The only sounds were the plentiful birds, cattle mooing (continuous but distant), distant roosters and an occasional dog bark in the distance. At night, the stars were on full display (although we didn’t take advantage of this, because it was chilly enough that we retired to our tents to sleep by the time it was properly dark!). We did enjoy birding from the comfort of our camp chairs by the campfire.
For firewood, we brought some wood, used some of the provided wood, and then bought five bundles CHEAP from the friendly folks at Burget’s Hardware about 3 miles from the site. We were happy to be able to leave two bundles behind for the next folks.
The composting toilet worked perfectly for our needs. If you have loose long-haired dogs and you’re visiting during burr season, heads up for plentiful burrs in the area behind the toilet shed, and maybe pack a brush and scissors.
We could see why so many people return here — we are likely to be back again. Thanks, Yvonne!
(P.S. If you have dogs and are worried about the rules / warnings about the cows and the electric fence, there is no reason I was able to see that you should be anywhere near the cows or any electric fence. It's a little hard to imagine what shenanigans someone was doing that necessitated that those rules and warnings be included. Be respectful of the property and you should be fine.)
