AN UNEXPECTED GREEN ISLAND

Green Island is an unexpected pine forest located actually inside a small town in northcentral Minnesota. The camping area is incredibly private and surrounds a small pond. It is primitive with minimal amenities beyond an outhouse and hand pump for water. Accessibility is only for tenting or truly tiny camper vehicles. The campground is a huge semi-shaded space for up to 20 tents, still, we prefer 1 or 2 at a time. However, larger group retreats are possible. We are serious environmentalists and we offer this opportunity just for true nature lovers as singles or couples, who totally take care of themselves, leave absolutely no trace, and are solid environmental stewards. In other words, its no place for a party. Separate from the campground there are: apple orchards, outdoor sculptures, wildlife, a meditation kuti, and perfect spaces for forest therapy. Yet almost unbelieveably, you can walk to a Pizza Hut or Walmart in 5 minutes. This is an excellent staging point for outdoors people en route to Itasca State Park, The Lost Fourty, and the state and national forests of the north.Tent camp at an expansive walk-in site along a 1/2 acre wildlife pond surrounded  by trees and shrubs for privacy. From there, stroll through a young 40-acre pine forest. Watch deer, hand pump water from the natural aquifer, and if you are an experienced meditator you may use the sacred kuti on stilts. In season, there could be surplus berries or apples and medicinal herbs available. All this is entirely INSIDE a small city in northern Minnesota. Green Island is the  poster child of a best future for urban/rural interface (mankind's increasing displacement of nature). Here, you won't find full freedom from the voices and sounds that accompany man but they are "out there" from the boundaries of this small, green, sanctuary for nature. Deer, fox, herons, and songbirds frequent the day and owls (plus an occasional bear) roam at night. And, in that night the forest is rimmed by scattered lights from businesses, homes, and restaurants, so the sky glows for a midnight stroll. During the day a five-minute walk will actually get you to a Pizza Hut, Subway, Chinese Buffet, health food store, or Walmart. Ours is the place for a preparation stop en route to Minnesota's canoe country or the deep forest trails at Itasca State Park, the gem of Minnesota. We do need a minimum of 48-hours advance notice for bookings because we are outdoors during the day. The time for checking emails is once in evenings... so confirmation or correspondence can take a bit of time. PS ....This summer we are working on adding a stained glass outhouse. In the meantime, a stroll into the bushes is necessary.... or a visit to Burger King across the road. PS......If you happen to be a comfort camper with an RV our featured wildlife pond won't work. But the city of Wadena has a lovely campground with full facilities and there is also a huge Walmart parking lot in town.
