EarthWell Retreat Center boasts a spring-fed swimming pond situated on forty acres of rolling prairie, forest and wetland, surrounded by one hundred acres of Washtenaw County Nature Preserve. Six off-grid sleeping cabins dot the landscape, all within a short walk to our Common House, that includes a large gathering space, community kitchen/dining and bathrooms/shower. EarthWell offers Yoga and Meditation classes and weekend retreats year-round. Located in Southeastern Michigan, just 30 minutes west of Ann Arbor, and near the towns of Grasslake, Chelsea, Manchester. (All downtowns are 7-10 miles away). EarthWell allows hiking, wildlife watching (amazing sandhill cranes), swimming and canoeing/kayaking/paddleboating in our pond. East of Chelsea is the expansive Pinckney and Waterloo State Recreation areas, with over 20 lakes and trails for hikers, bikers, backpackers, and horseback riders. There are two households (the families of Ari Wakeman and Emily Adama) that live permanently on the property. (one in the lower level of the common house, and one in a cabin 200 yards from the common house.) During your rental they will maintain quiet and privacy for your group, but will remain on the property for the duration of your stay and will be available should any issues arise. Bring your own tent, bedding, and linens for this accessible and simple way to stay at a nourishing yoga and meditation retreat center in the woods. Camping at EarthWell Retreat Center is open in a few general designated areas including along the road/walking path across the field for an epic sunrise, a semi-secluded spot right on the water, a number of spots on the edge of the northern-most part of the property by the pond, and in the gorgeous woods north of the pond. Campsites are first-come-first-serve. One tent/or single-family bookings only. MAXIMUM 2 adults (we have 4 "campsites" available, so if your party includes more than 2 adults please book additional spots so we can account for the load on our modern shared glamping facilities). Locally sourced and made pre-packaged meals, meditation and yoga classes, and more available. (must pre-book with us). Open seasonally (May-Oct), this cozy space has screened-in windows/doors on all four sides for the maximal amount of airflow, and minimum amount of mosquitos! • Linens and pillows (no towels) • Battery-operated fans • This non-insulated mini-cabin is located down the hill from The Upper Bungalow, super close to the pond. • This cabin includes access to all hiking trails, a swimmable pond, and a shared modern kitchen. • Locally sourced and made pre-packaged meals, meditation and yoga classes, and more available for booking separately on our website. • Personal Pots/Pans Bin and shelf space for non-perishables. • Alcohol is not allowed. My son and I camped on Emily's property for 5 days, set camp up right next to the beautiful pond where you can fish or go swimming. The property is absolutely beautiful with trails you can walk an explore and watch wildlife everywhere. Would totally recommend great place to relax and unwind. Emily is a great host can't wait ti go back

Peaceful Pure Michigan Escape

Earthwell is a wonderful place to unplug and immerse yourself in nature without feeling completely cut off from humanity. The retreat has charming, well-stocked cabins that felt cozy and homey. Firewood and amenities were thoughtfully provided. Outhouses were well-maintained and managed odor surprisingly well. The property itself is stunning: grass trails wind through meadows, forests, hills, and streams, with a pond perfect for paddling (canoes, kayaks, and a paddleboat are included). Wildlife is abundant- fish, frogs, and turtles in the pond; hawks, bats, and countless birds overhead; and even the distant calls of coyotes and foxes. The diversity of trees- walnut, oak, maple, and pines- made the terrain lush and vibrant. Nights brought a gorgeous starry sky and mornings offered beautiful sunrises. The host, Emily, was warm and welcoming while providing plenty of space. Chelsea, just ten minutes away, makes for an easy day trip or supply run, but you may never want to leave the property. Overall, Earthwell is a fantastic spot for several days of peaceful retreat and a place that captures the best of Pure Michigan.

I hammock camped in a beautiful site next to the pond. Compost toilets were nearby and very well taken care of (these are small, self-contained toilets that may not be a great option for larger individuals), with a full shower and bathroom at the retreat center up front. Water pressure in the shower was VERY low, but it was as expected for a small earth-centric retreat center (if you need a shower while the retreat center is in place or find yourself in need of water pressure to blast off a long day, the TA truck stop is 15 minutes away and offers private showers for $17. Tent camping area had a few gorgeous trees protecting it and a fire pit for use. Owners were very welcoming, met me at arrival and provided a tour of the retreat center, map of the property, and information on anything I needed. Excellent property, would absolutely stay again.

Beautiful, serene tent, camping space on a super clean swimming pond. You will need to cart your belongings to your site (they provide the carts) but it’s a five minute walk and I did it in three trips for a full weekend. For me, it was 100% worth it for such a bucolic spot and great hospitality.

Pond-view Canvas Cabin
We had such a great visit to EarthWell retreat! We absolutely loved our little rustic cabin and all the details made it so inviting and cozy. No need for electricity when they provide wireless fans and lanterns. The grounds are very well taken care of, the trails easy to walk and explore. The pond wasn’t too swimmable as it was later in the summer and the vegetation was high but we never felt that distracted from our weekend. Chelsea is close and has lots of options for food and shopping. Having the main house for charging and showers was a really nice extra benefit. We also fell in love with a very friendly kitty that came to visit us a few times. Overall, this is a great place to come and take a break from it all. Highly recommend!

Pond-view Canvas Cabin
Awesome getaway, not far from Detroit. We spent a day browsing the cute Chelsea downtown, and then gathered for campfire and memories. The space is very thoughtful, and Emily is a GREAT host. There are a lot of details that make the camp special.

Wooded Canvas Cabin
Thumbs way up for this awesome space! A few of us booked a last-minute overnight and we had a great time. The space was clean, calm, and awesome. Attention to details like extra blankets and a fire pit made the stay even better. Thanks so much for this hidden gem!

This was a peaceful camping getaway with a friend and first hip camp stay. The garden carts to the tent site were very sturdy. Waking up to a beautiful lake view was amazing. The common house was clean, kitchen drawers and supplies labeled, and a fantastic view. Trails were maintained. I'll remember this retreat and trip for a long time with good memories.

Fun weekend getaway

I booked a weekend stay for my mom and I. We enjoyed our time! The bungalow was nice and as pictured. The trails had clear paths to follow which was nice. Activities for the pond were included. The pond was murky so we didn’t try, however other guests utilized. The community house initially was pretty messy, the refrigerator smelled awful and the kitchen was dirty. But as the weekend came to a close (there was an event on Sunday) the area was cleaned and tidied. The hosts were pretty friendly and fairly welcoming. Improvements could be having an area for firewood off grass — the wood was in grass so often wet and was in a pile of weeds. We wouldn’t have worried about that except there was a sign warning for poison ivy. Other than that, it was a quiet and very relaxing stay.

This place is gorgeous. The host was very accommodating to our needs and left us to our own devices. Our trip got cut short due to illness but if we could have we would have stayed extra days! Definitely will be back! If you’re on the fence, go for it!

Secluded Getaway
"Fire" Eco-Cabin at EarthWell
Emily was very welcoming and the area was nicely secluded. Cabin was great and kept cozy on cold nights with the propane heater. Must be well insulated as it kept heat while we were gone several hours. The kitchen was well stocked with basics including a microwave, pots, pans and silverware. The composting toilet was nice and clean. It was clear that a lot of thought was put into the camper’s comfort with helpful signage. Showers were nicer than I expected, very clean. Overall it was easy to enjoy ourselves. Swore we startled a white deer one night. Wish we had gotten more info about hiking from cabin. Being unsure of trails we chose to go to Waterloo Recreation area to hike starting from visitor’s center. We had a great time and would consider this a getaway for the future.

An overnight or week long retreat!

Very private well kept sites on beautiful rolling property with groomed trails. Lower bungalo was charming. The whole place has a nice attention to detail that makes it feel special. Having lanterns and water indoor showers and kitchen make this an easy and relaxing stay. Very doable just for an overnight or perfect for a longer retreat or get together with a group of friends. Quiet and peaceful!

A lovely location - trails through woods, meadow and wetlands. Lots of birds. We stayed three nights in a tent site and really enjoyed the connection to nature while also having the convenience of a full kitchen and bath at the common house available to us. Communication was excellent and the caretakers were helpful and available but also careful to allow us a lot of space and privacy. Thank you, Earthwell!

Get as much of this place in your life as you can! Great energy and very nice hosts. Our cabin was lovely, very peaceful. The common house had everything we needed to prepare our own meals and enjoy a nice shower! I would be interested in checking out one of their retreats in the future.

Camping Access at EarthWell (#2)
It was an absolutely perfect spot to wind down and enjoy nature. So peaceful and yet with comfort needs met. I enjoyed walking the meadow in sunset and listening to frogs chirping in the pond. I would love to have stayed for the entire weekend. Lastly, the hosts were also so gracious and welcoming. Thank you Emily for sharing your lovely camp.

Beautiful! We loved the screened-in porch with rocking chairs. We also thought it would be fun to come back and bring another two friends since there were four mattresses, but we would probably want to all hang out on the porch (since that was a highlight - it was so pretty looking at the birds etc while we chatted) and thus want more chairs. But overall it was great, relaxing, quiet, pretty.

I’m so happy I found this place! I stayed 2 nights on my way out west from the east coast. It’s so beautiful and peaceful. The pond is amazing. And the sandhill cranes and bunnies and frogs are great company :) Everything was easy and even better than I expected.

This was our first HipCamp. We had a blast and will definitely be back. The host was great. The property is awesome. With a little lake to paddleboat and swim. The cabins are really cute and very clean. Nice screened in porch so you can sit outside without the bugs

Off-grid Cabin at Meditation Center
earthwell is a beautiful place to stay! my sister and i drove 10 hrs from NJ and were happy to finally land at the “air” eco cabin. the cabin was clean and comfortable, and the staff were kind and welcoming. the pond on the property was an added bonus; we brought dinner and cooked over the fire while watching the sunset over the water. I even tried my fishing rod in the lake and we caught many colorful sunfish! overall we loved our visit and will definitely book again next time we travel to the area! :)

Beautiful property! Great communication from host. Emily let us upgrade from a camping spot to one of the cabins which was awesome. Great stay!

The entire place was SO beautiful. I absolutely loved waking up to the sounds of all the wildlife and then once I step outside, seeing the deer doing their morning stroll and smelling that fresh morning air. This place is quiet and relaxing. There’s plenty of little trails to walk on and beautiful plants and sights to see. Emily is the kindest person ever and super welcoming.
