Heard County, located in west central Georgia along the Alabama border, is a unique destination steeped in rich history and natural beauty. Established in 1830, this charming county spans 301 square miles and was formed from portions of Carroll, Coweta, and Troup counties. It is named after Stephen Heard, a notable patriot from the American Revolution who served as Georgia's governor from 1780 to 1781. Originally inhabited by Creek Indians, the land that is now Heard County was ceded to the state following the Treaty of Indian Springs in 1825. Shortly after this treaty, white settlers began to arrive, primarily through state-run land lotteries, seeking fertile land for agriculture. Many of these newcomers hailed from other regions of Georgia, drawn by the promise of better opportunities. Today, Heard County offers a blend of historical significance and outdoor adventure. Visitors can explore its scenic landscapes, enjoy various recreational activities, and discover local attractions, including swimming holes and hiking trails.
