(1)
Cabin · Sleeps 4 · 1 bedroom · 1 bed · 1 toilet
Bob-O-Link cabin interior The Bob-O-Link, named after a bird with a sweet song, is one of the 1930s Bruce originals. It’s of solid log construction with an open floor plan and has changed some over the years with the addition of new cabinets and a very comfortable front screened-in porch. From the porch, you’ll have a view of the lodge with Hatcher Mountain in the background. All our cabins have electricity, refrigerator, gas oven with four burners, microwave, pots, pans, dishes and utensils, as well as a kitchen table with chairs. A pot bellied stove provides heat, with chopped wood easily available. Note: you can chop your own wood from the pile located near the lodge for free (ax available), or purchase a bundle for a fee. Each cabin has a half bath with cold running water and a clean, centralized area for hot showers in individual stalls. There is also a central laundry facility that can be used for a small fee. Linens are not provided. Bring sleeping bags or sheets for full sized beds, blankets, pillows, kitchen and bath towels and cloths, bath soap, shampoo, and food. Aspen Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 6 · 2 bedrooms · 2 beds · 1 toilet
The Aspen cabin, dating back to the mid-1930s, is of solid log construction and named after the beautiful aspen trees found throughout Colorado. This two double bed cabin is similar in design to the Linnet with the same remodeling and porch design changes. The cabin has a bed in the main part of the cabin, and a second bedroom located off the screened-in porch. The Aspen sits off by itself and has a nice shaded picnic area with a gurgling mountain stream running by its side. Chipmunk Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 6 · 2 bedrooms · 2 beds · 1 toilet
Chipmunk cabin lodging kitchen The Chipmunk has two separate bedrooms with a double bed in each. It is a second generation cabin obviously named after the little chipmunks that are so loved at Bruce Spruce Ranch. The Chipmunk was built by Craig Hinger and Larry Brotherton to replace an original Judge Bruce cabin that was no longer usable. The old cabin, the Bark Inn was torn down and the Chipmunk was built as its replacement and was the first building project under the new owners (Hingers) in 1966. Columbine Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 8 · 2 bedrooms · 3 beds · 1 toilet
The Columbine is one of the first 1930s cabins but its construction is of solid log type and its name, as you might guess, is after Colorado’s state flower. The Columbine is a three double bed cabin with an upstairs bedroom and a wall between the two beds downstairs. It might be interesting to note that Judge Bruce brought a large crew of carpenters from Pleasant Hill, MO in 1935 or 1936 to work all summer building all of the original cabins, the Columbine being one of these. Elk Inn Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 10 · 2 bedrooms · 4 beds · 1 toilet
This cabin has an open floor plan with 2 beds downstairs and 2 beds upstairs. The Elk Inn has a history totally different from all of the Bruce original cabins. In the late ’30s or early ’40s a man by the name of Wooding came to the Pagosa Springs area, and he leased National Forest land just down the road from Judge Bruce’s, Bruce Spruce Ranch. He then proceeded to build six solid log cabins where he started his own guest ranch which he called the Flying W Guest Ranch, and it was operated as such for many years. After his passing and Forest Service policy changes, and failure of new owners, it was determined that the cabins had to be moved. At that time Craig and Gena Hinger bid on and got three of the cabins, the Elk being one of those. The Elk Inn was then moved, which is a story in itself, and placed where another historic Bruce cabin “Tee Pee” previously had stood, but was crushed by a tree. After this cabin was renovated and placed into service it was named Elk Inn after the mighty elk of the Rockies. It is a four double bed cabin enjoyed by many larger families. This all took place in 1970-71. Flicker Inn Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 6 · 2 bedrooms · 2 beds · 1 toilet
Flicker Inn cabin bed The Flicker is a solid log two double bed cabin with an open floor plan named after the Flicker woodpecker that frequents most of the United States. The construction of the Flicker (as with the Aspen), dates back to the mid 1930s. This cabin was the favorite of Craig Hinger’s Uncle Fred and Aunt Willie Hinger who were responsible for getting the rest of the Hinger clan started coming to Bruce Spruce Ranch back in the 1940s and at that time, the Flicker was only a one double cabin. This cabin has a screened in porch with a wonderful view of the mountain we call BootJack. Fritz's Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 6 · 2 bedrooms · 2 beds · 1 toilet
Fritz’s Cabin has a bed in the main room and bed in the bedroom. This solid log cabin in the beginning was neither a wrangler’s cabin nor a rental cabin, but rather a home for a full time caretaker for the Bruce Spruce Ranch. It was occupied by a flinty old timer by the name of Fritz Chapel. Fritz came to the Pagosa Springs area long before Wolf Creek Pass road as a prospector and trapper, something he did for many years with his friend Buck O’Neal. When I was a kid, the outside walls were lined with his many traps. In Fritz’s older days, Judge Bruce hired him to look after the Bruce Spruce Ranch cabins both summer and winter, especially in the winter when the snow needed to be shoveled from the roofs. Fritz's cabin road in the mountains Old Fritz used to entertain the kids that stayed at the Ranch for hours on end with his tales of yesterday plus some spice added on. After Fritz passed in the 1950s, the Wranglers Cabin was used for just that. The Wranglers that ran the horses and hunting trips at Bruce Spruce Ranch from the 1950s thru 2010 used the Wranglers Cabin as their headquarters. Then in 2010, the permit for the horses was lost and in 2011 and 2012 the Wranglers Cabin was completely remodeled and turned into a rental unit for the 2013 season. Interesting to note, this cabin was original to the McCoy Homestead. Hummingbird Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 12 · 2 bedrooms · 5 beds · 1 toilet
The Hummingbird is obviously named after the hundreds of these birds that visit the Bruce Spruce Ranch each year and people so delight in feeding. It has an open floor plan with 2 beds downstairs and 3 beds upstairs. This five double bed solid log cabin is one of those cabins that was moved in from the Flying W Guest Ranch and, after a complete makeover inside, it was ready to join the rest of the family of Bruce Spruce Ranch cabins. This took place in 1970-71. Linnet Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 6 · 2 bedrooms · 2 beds · 1 toilet
This cabin is similar in design to the Aspen with the same remodeling and porch design changes. It has a bed in the main part of the cabin with a second bedroom off the screened-in porch. Linnet is an old-fashioned name for a lark. The Lark Bunting is the state bird of Colorado. The Linnet is a relative of the Spruce in that it, too, is constructed of logs taken from the barn of the original McCoy homestead. This two double bed cabin came to life as it now stands in the mid 1930s. Other than being remodeled, its only other major change came when the outer bedroom was logged in. The original bedroom wall was a half-log wall with opaque screen wire at the top. The Linnet was the cabin that the Hinger family rented on their annual trip to Colorado from 1948 to the time they bought the Bruce Spruce Ranch in 1966. The Linnet is named after a small songbird in the finch family. Red Robin Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 4 · 1 bedroom · 1 bed · 1 toilet
Red Robin cabin interior The Red Robin is an original Judge Bruce creation. It is one of our most popular one double bed cabins. This cabin, built in the mid 1930s, is of slab construction, and is named after one of the most common Rocky Mountain birds. It has an open floor plan with screened in porch and swing where many a peaceful hour has been spent looking at the mountains and relaxing. It’s been in continuous use since the ’30s with periodic renovations over the years. All our cabins have electricity, refrigerator, freezer, gas oven with four burners, microwave, pots, pans, dishes and utensils, as well as a kitchen table with chairs. A pot bellied stove provides heat, with chopped wood easily available. Note: you can chop your own wood from the pile located near the lodge for free (ax available), or purchase a bundle for a fee. This cabin has an open floor plan with 2 beds downstairs and 3 beds upstairs. The Saddleback is a solid log five double bed structure that sits off by itself next to Turks Pond, one of the Ranch’s lakes. The Saddleback is one of the three cabins that were moved in from a neighboring guest ranch, the Flying W Guest Ranch. This cabin also joined the others, after a complete makeover in the 1970-71 era. It has both an up and down stairs and is perfect for large families. All our cabins have electricity, refrigerator, gas oven with four burners, microwave, pots, pans, dishes and utensils, as well as a kitchen table with chairs. Spruce Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 6 · 2 bedrooms · 2 beds · 1 toilet
The Spruce cabin is named after the tree that covers most of our forest land surrounding the Ranch. This two bedroom (double bed in each room) solid log cabin is very unique in that the logs used in its construction were taken from the original barn on the McCoy homestead, of which Bruce Spruce Ranch was a part of, and dates back to the early 1900s. Look closely and you will see that all of the logs in the walls were hand-hewn prior to the introduction of saw mills to the area. You can still see the axe marks where the logs were shaped. The Spruce was also reconstructed by the Bruce carpenters in the mid 1930s. Steller's Perch Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 6 · 2 bedrooms · 2 beds · 1 toilet
This cabin has two bedrooms with one bed in each room. It also has a pullout queen couch bed. The Steller is named after the Steller Jay, the dark blue jay that will borrow your food from your picnic table if left unattended. The Steller is the largest of our two double bed cabins and is the youngster of all the cabins. This cabin was built by Craig, Rusty, and Chris Hinger and our good friend Dwayne Ledbetter (who by the way was a builder from Ft. Collins). From start to finish we had guests walking in the front door thirty days after its start-up. It is a slab sided structure with all the slab being peeled with a drawknife by hand by Craig. The Steller was a replacement cabin for the previous cabin on that site called the Wee Hut. The Wee Hut was a small very rustic cabin that at one time sat in the center of the current circle of cabins and was a café. It served as a café long before any of the other cabins existed. The Wee Hut’s replacement was precipitated by trees falling on it and rendering it unusable. Wigwam Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 6 · 2 bedrooms · 2 beds · 1 toilet
The Wigwam is a two double bed cabin with an open floor plan and a queen pullout couch bed. It is the only cabin not named after an animal, tree or a land feature, and the reason is quite interesting. The Wigwam was built of solid log construction in the mid to late ’30s by very close friends of Judge Bruce’s, Jaunita and Henry Ketosh. The Ketosh’s were full blood Native Americans of the Crow Nation, and they lived in the Wigwam every summer for many years until their passing, thus the name Wigwam. The special agreement the Ketosh’s had with their friends the Bruce’s was that they could live in their cabin until they no longer needed it, or they passed on, and at that time, it would return to the Bruce’s to be used as a rental cabin. It should be noted that Jaunita Ketosh was a much respected educator who held her masters degree in education and taught on both the high school and college levels. Woodchuck Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 4 · 1 bedroom · 1 bed · 1 toilet
The Woodchuck is another old timer from the same era (1930s) as Red Robin and the same slab style construction. The Woodchuck is named for the woodchuck and rock marmot family that frequents the high country of the Rocky Mountains. This one double bed cabin is another favorite because of its nicely shaded picnic and campfire area along with its open floor plan.
