This place was absolutely fantastic! The drive in is a long "just keep swimming" ordeal, but once you get there, you've arrived at a cute little quiet tranquil rest stop in the forest. The bathhouse has a nice tub, hot shower, and hot sauna, it's clean and comfortable. Some campsites are close to others, and some a bit more remote and pulled back. Clean communal kitchen with stove, cookware, utensils, etc. Owners are very nice, and there's even a cute map of the property. Totally worth it. I'd recommend at least two nights as there's so much to explore and do here!

Definitely recommend a 4x4 vehicle to get to the property. Have your directions downloaded before you pass the high school. Our Subaru was up for the task!
The property is gorgeous and very secluded. We brought our 8 year old boy and dog. We were super lucky to have the entire camp site to ourselves the entire weekend. The temperature at night was almost freezing, so the sauna and shower made it much more tolerable. The sauna was by far the highlight of the trip for me besides being with my family unplugged!
Epic stargazing at the point camp site.
Having a kitchen to make a full meal for each meal was a luxury. The kitchen has everything you need to cook minus ingredients. Bring your own oil/spices etc.
Also, pack out what you pack in. Meaning, there isn’t a garbage facility/ site dumpster.
Also, there is really only 1 running toilet that we could find by the kitchen. I could see this being annoying in a large group setting, although having a toilet at all is a luxury when camping.
If you’re a BBQ enthusiast, bring your own grill, there isn’t one to use on the property.
Make sure to bring tick repellant/ check yourselves (especially dogs) regularly. We pulled a dozen off our dog and bodies.
Highly recommend this spot for a weekend getaway! We loved it and will certainly be back, as a couple, as a family and with friends for sure!!

A beautiful place to come in the fall. Weather was warm during the day the forest hikes and waterfall were beautiful. Having a bath house with a sauna was a real treat. Be prepared for the long dirt road up to the property. Lots of potholes, steep hills, and turns, you need daylight and patience.

This is an incredibly special place. The land itself is spectacular, with some of the most stunning views I’ve seen. Campsites are spread out and each very sweet. We bought out the whole place for a big group of families. Kids ranging from 2-10, and they couldn’t have been happier. And the amenities are the best! Chris has done such a nice job with the sauna house and outdoor shower and kitchen. Perfect gathering places. The coyotes, birds, and wild horses were wildlife highlights for us all. Stargazing is awesome as it’s far from most light pollution.
Note that the road is rough and took us 35 mins in a truck, but our two kids who get carsick a lot were fine with a little Dramamine.

What a magical spot! We loved exploring the property, spending time in the sauna/bathhouse, and sitting around the fireplace at night. The kitchen was fully stocked for a group of 16 to cook all of our weekend meals, and we loved sharing meals together. The hosts were very responsive and the property was easy enough to find (in the daytime at least!) We will need to return when the river is running!

Such a nice spot. We really enjoyed the drive out there, and having the place to ourselves on Friday night. A larger group arrived on Saturday, but the distance between the kitchen area and the camp sites means everyone has their space and the camp is peaceful. Beautiful night sky and morning sun.

Beautiful piece of land in a remote part of Mendocino County. The sauna and showers are gorgeously constructed. Although the creek was dry when we were there in September, the hike was gorgeous. A perk of September visit there is the fig tree that was big enough to feed all the visiting campers.
There was a large group of friendly campers there during our stay. So while the camping stay didn’t feel private it is a beautiful spot.

I’ve booked Spirit Chicken twice, for a 7-person birthday and a 20-person going away party. It never disappoints. We love the land there, vistas looking out on other Mendocino peaks and the fog rolling in drop down into steep oak-studded canyons with swimmable creeks at the bottom. Chris has done an amazing job building out a common kitchen and gathering area, sauna and bathhouse, outhouse, and more. There are enough amenities to support a large
group (even those who don’t like rustic camping). My favorite magic element of this land is the horses that drink from the pond further down on the property.
Two heads up - The country road to get her is totally passable by any type of car but not for the faint of heart (my friend did it in their beetle, but it took an hour). The waterfall is seasonal and doesn’t flow during dry season.
Thank you Chris! It’s worth the trek and I want to come back every year!

What a great property. We did the 'buy out' option and rented the whole property for two families - a total of 4 adults and 5 kids. And it felt exactly like (better even) than we'd hoped. Rustic and also super comfortable at the same time...bathrooms, a nice shower, full kitchen, and a sauna.
The full kitchen and open air structure with attached bedroom and bathroom and a wood burning stove were a great central hangout spot.
The care taken with signage made it feel like the property had been optimized over years for guest comfort. A well-run operation.
The owner, Chris', house was walking distance away, but the area still felt very private. A great site

My partner and I (and two dogs) spent two nights at Spirit Chicken Ranch. The road to the ranch wasn't as bad as I thought. It did take me about 50 minutes to get to the site in my Subaru Impreza, and 30 minutes when we left. I was being overly cautious and didn't need to be.
The location itself is nestled deep in the foothills of Ukiah. Oaks, manzanita, and grasses abound! We saw woodpeckers, Jay's, salamander and many other little creatures. Coyote cackled in the canyons! So much nature and as much solitude as you'd like. The trail to the swimming hole and waterfall is best done with proper footware and not Chacos. The pond was delightful and having the shower, bathroom and kitchen was luxurious but still rustic with summer camp vibes.
We had the campsite to ourselves Friday night, and then shared the space with another camper and friends on Saturday. We had a nice site just above the main campground area for some privacy and to keep our naughty dogs out of the mix. Even thought it was warm, there was plenty of shade provided by the lovely oaks.
We swam in both the pond and swimming hole, and it glorious. Big thanks to Chris and Taylor for sharing their property.

Chris greeted us and gave us a run down about the different parts the property had to offer, including a pond, sauna, watering holes, and more. The stars definitely shine bright here, allowing us to see almost 10 shooting stars in 1 night :)

Incredible place. Many different hiking options, we enjoyed hiking to the waterfall and the giant bay tree. Shower was amazing. Waking up to wild horses looking in our tent was special. Chris was a very friendly host and you can tell he takes a lot of pride in making this place special for people. The drive up wasn’t as bad as I expected the road was fine and even a car would make it fine, however I was told after rain it does get sort of bad. Will be back for sure.

We had a great time staying at this beautiful spot nestled deep in the woods, with stunning views and a peaceful setting. Chris was very responsive and helpful throughout our stay, which we appreciated.
We especially loved the outdoor shower and the sauna.
That said, there were a few challenges. For a group of 25, having only one flushable toilet made things difficult. Additionally, having to pack out all of our trash was tough given the amount of gear we already had with us. Due to fire restrictions, we couldn’t use the wood-burning heater, and the gas heater didn’t work — it got very cold at night.
Overall, a beautiful place with a lot of potential, but a few logistical limitations to be aware of for larger groups.

We had a lovely time, especially hanging out in the outdoor kitchen. It's really well equipped for a larger group and the facilities are easy to use. The pond was fun for swimming and the adjacent sauna, tub, and shower worked great. We went on the loop hike to both waterfalls and in June it was really pretty adventurous climbing up the creek, with poison oak everywhere. I would recommend water shoes and long pants, cuz we got scratched up by branches. Lots of mosquitoes at certain times of day, so be prepared, and we got a tick, so do bring tweezers! Wonderful place to gather a group for an outdoor adventure.

This was gorgeous, magical land, and we loved being there. The road down was a bit more of a pilgrimage than we anticipated, but 1000% worth the journey. The waterfall pools were incredible, and our pup was in heaven too. Thank you for sharing such special land with us- we hope to return!

We loved staying at Spirit Chicken Ranch! We had a group of 25 adults and kids and our whole group had a blast and really enjoyed spreading out across the sites. The outdoor kitchen was amazing to have - I was pleasantly surprised at how well its stocked and how convenient it was, especially for a large group. There were two cabins each with a queen bed which was nice for those that dont love camping as much :)
We all hiked the 1/2 mile down to the waterfall, the last decline was pretty tricky but a cool dip on the waterfall made it worth it.
The kids loved swimming in the pond and the sauna was enjoyed by all. There was space for an epic ladder ball tournament and room for us all by the fire pit. Thank you Chris for sharing your beautiful land!

Chris was super kind and his property is beautiful. It’s a trek to get there and the spots are tight. I backed into a killer spot with an amazing view of the valley but it was rough getting out. The road is rutted. The directions are very clear. The hike to the waterfall was beautiful. Chris provided free firewood. If you’re camping in a small enough vehicle I highly recommend
