Hideout Mountain Lodge is a peaceful retreat tucked away in the hills of Santa Ysabel, just over an hour from San Diego and a couple of hours from Los Angeles. Spread across 40 acres, the property offers a variety of places to stay — from remodeled cabins with fireplaces and private decks, to vintage trailers, campsites, and RV spots with full hookups and views of Lake Henshaw.
This is the kind of place where you slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the landscape. Guests gather around the community firepit, take walks through the oaks, or just relax on a porch and listen to the birds.
On weekends, you can wander over to Josie’s Hideout Saloon, our on-site bar and restaurant, known for its live music and western character.
We’re just a few minutes from the towns of Santa Ysabel and Julian, easy to get to but far enough away to feel like an escape.

Welcome to The Cove, an amazing shaded campsite nestled under a canopy of oak trees. There is enough room for 4 separate 21'x17' campsites comprising the 82' x 17' area (just under 1400 sq ft). But we are limiting the number of separate bookings to just 2 (with maximum of 4 people per site for privacy reasons). We believe in the WOW experience which includes lots of space in nature. However...
. . Do you have a large group of campers? You can book the entire Cove area which can probably handle up to around 40 people.
PLEASE NOTE: For privacy reasons, if booking only one site, there is a maximum of 4 campers. If you’re coming with more than 4 people, you will need to book the entire Cove - to do this you’ll need to book both sites separately indicating the amount of people that would stay on each site. For example, if you have a total of 7 people you’ll book one site with 4 and other with 3. The buyout fee is the greater of the per camper fee (up to 40) with a minimum of 8 people. For example, if you just want 2 people and guarantee privacy for the whole area, just pay for both sites to a total of 8 people. (The Cove is pretty inexpensive).
San Diego Mountain Lodge has multiple camping areas with two locations with electrical outlets, outdoor heated showers, sink, AND outdoor flushing toilets. Both shower locations are just a nearby stroll from The Cove. The preferred showers and bathroom for The Cove is just down the steps from The Crossing campground (next to The Cove) and towards Josie's Hideout Bar & Restaurant.
Each Cove site has it's own fire pit. There is a hose attached to Cabin 9 nearby, please make sure to completely extinguish the flames when you are done with the fire.
The Cove can accommodate a few cars but you can drop off gear, and parking is nearby (about 50 yards away down the road).
NOTE: On Saturday and Sunday afternoons you will hear live music and motorcycle noise until about 4pm and the bar closes between 5-6pm.
IMPORTANT: Have Fun. Be safe. Again, when using the fire pit, make sure you put it out with the hose attached to Cabin 9 before leaving the fire pit unattended.

Welcome to one of our campsites at Hideout Mountain Lodge! This large terraced camp area called Josie's Backyard Campground has plenty of space to sprawl out and set up camp (No camping next to your car, since this site doesn’t have car access. Parking is located a few steps away, so you couldn’t park next to your tent on this site or come with a rooftop tent, you’d need to book one of our other listings).
Located within a Dark Sky Community, the star gazing is unparalleled. Amenities include hot showers, sink, flushing toilets, picnic tables, and BBQ. The camp area is located above our on site restaurant, Josie's Hideout Saloon (open Friday-Saturday 11am-6pm, Sunday, 11am-5pm). On Saturday and Sunday families, tourists, locals, and motorcyclists from all over the world frequent the restaurant to enjoy live music, typically begining around 12pm until 3pm.
A note before booking: Since this site is located near the saloon, it’s not completely private (guests might come and go close to it) and you’ll likely hear live music, friendly chatter, and the occasional rumble of motorcycles while the bar is open. It all wraps up around 5PM, but if you’re seeking total quiet during those hours, this may not be the best fit. If you're up for a vibrant atmosphere with peace returning by sunset, you’ll love it here!

Our RV Site #15, The Scenic Sanctuary, is located towards the end of lower Hideout Mountain Road past all the Cabins and The Raven (a very unique tiny home).
Site #15 is located next to Sites #14 and #16 ‘The Amphitheater’. If you want to come with more than 4 people, you need to book Site #14 as well, to provide privacy for all guests.
VIEWS: #14 has great views, #15 has superb views. #16 is just past the other two sites and has the most unbelievable views on the entire 35 acre property. Site #16 is also the largest of the 3 view sites, and is the most secluded. You’ll see why it’s called The Amphitheater.

The Crossing has 2 outdoor heated showers conveniently located down some steps. There are two outdoor bathrooms with flushing toilets located further down some additional steps on the outdoor patio of Josie’s Hideout Restaurant.
The Crossing is a private area that is adjacent to the Cove which is a canopy of giant oak trees. There are no lake views.

A large shared deck sits at the heart of The Perch, serving as a communal hangout space open to all guests—whether you’re staying in an RV, one of our cabins, or a campsite. It’s not a private space, but it is where connections happen, sunsets are shared, and the occasional spontaneous gathering takes place.
The Perch is also home to Live Sessions at The Perch, where invited musicians perform stripped-down acoustic versions of their original songs. These intimate live recordings are captured on film, with guests welcome to attend and become part of the moment. It’s a truly special Hideout experience that blends music, nature, and community under open skies.

Don't think that our backcountry locals are the only wildlife around here! This place is full of wild animals like deer, fox, raccoons, bats, ground squirrels and chipmunks. Keep a steady eye open for rattlesnakes, badgers and mountain lions, oh my! Make some noise so they know you're coming. Be not afraid, they're honestly more scared of us than we are of them! And once night falls, keep your ear's peeled for our local pack of coyotes while you star gaze under some of the darkest skies in San Diego County!
We love to encourage our guests to unplug and unwind, but in case you want to Netflix and chill, we have all the modern comforts of home covered here too. The fully stocked kitchen has all the essentials to cook a delicious home-cooked meal (once you go to the market first!) and a Keurig coffee machine for that morning cup o' joe. There is a shared outdoor fire pit to enjoy the incredible surrounding landscape, and offers the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine after a day of activities with friends and loved ones. Park it right there! Most parking spaces will accommodate two vehicles.

The Sunshine Retreat is a vintage retro camper that offers a complete glamping experience! Sleeps 4 people TOTAL, by folding down a dinette table with cushions (for two small people). An additional four people can camp outside of the trailer for an extra fee of $25/ night per person. Located closest to the top of Hideout Mountain, the backdrop of breathtaking views of Lake Henshaw and the surrounding SD Mountain Range will leave you awe inspired. Staying in a little camper has never looked this cool or been this easy! Simply drive-up, park your car and immerse yourself in nature at San Diego Mountain Lodge. The camper is equipped with a mini kitchen and the site has a huge private patio space equipped with a BBQ and picnic table. To set the nighttime vibe, we have a fire pit and string lights.
This is a stationary camper with a full-size bed. But it also has a fold down table to create another bed for two more people. There is a hideaway flushing toilet inside the trailer and an outdoor shower with hot water just steps away. Parking for any size vehicle.

And once night falls, keep your ear's peeled for our local pack of coyotes while you star gaze under some of the darkest skies in San Diego County! We love to encourage our guests to unplug and unwind, but in case you want to Netflix and chill, we have all the modern comforts of home covered here too. The fully stocked kitchen has all the essentials to cook a delicious home-cooked meal (once you go to the market first!) and a Keurig coffee machine for that morning cup o' joe. There is a shared outdoor fire pit to enjoy the incredible surrounding landscape, and offers the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine after a day of activities with friends and loved ones. Park it right there! Private parking spaces will accommodate any two large vehicles.

*Remember Josie's Hideout is only open Friday-Sunday, usually 11-5. There is typically live music on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The bar closes at dusk and live music cuts off at the same time.
*We do NOT allow pets in the campers, but some of our cabins are pet-friendly for a small pet fee of $35 per pet.
*Guest must supply there own wood for fire pit and charcoal for BBQ. We have a charcoal chimney starter for you at the grill provided.

Cabin #11 is a spacious, remodeled and recently refreshed stand-alone, two-bedroom cabin which sleeps FOUR adults PLUS room for one additional person on the couch. It is nestled on a hillside with unobstructed views of Lake Henshaw, the surrounding San Diego Mountain range, and the lush valley below. To make your stay even more memorable, we offer a wood-burning fireplace, a fully stocked kitchen, granite countertop, a large flat screen TV, and a cozy couch to snuggle up on. This cabin is one of 12 to choose from at Hideout Mountain Lodge - a boutique retreat destination on 40 acres of unspoiled nature with an unbelievably cool, one-of-a-kind historic bar and grill called Josie’s Hideout Saloon. Open Friday-Sunday till 5pm, with live music every weekend, weather permitting. This place is full of wild animals like deer, fox, raccoons, bats, ground squirrels and chipmunks. Keep a steady eye (and ear!) open for rattlesnakes, badgers and mountain lions, oh my! Make some noise so they know you're coming. Be not afraid though, they're honestly more scared of us than we are of them! And once night falls, keep your other ear peeled for our local pack of coyotes while you star gaze under some of the darkest skies in San Diego County! We're also very proud to be a birder's paradise with more woodland birds here than you can shake a stick at! How about a chance to see (and hear!) turkeys, owls, scrub jays, cardinals, woodpeckers, hawks, vultures and even the Western Tanager to name a few! Cabin #6, like all our cabins, has been completely remodeled. It is nestled on a hill with literally some of the best valley views around! The duplex cabin is spacious, yet stylishly furnished and has a shared large porch with cabin #5. It also has its own patio furniture, a wood-burning stove, full-size fridge and fully-loaded kitchen complete with granite countertops, a 40" flat screen TV, Wi-Fi, microwave, Keurig coffee machine with pods, creamer, and sugar included, recessed lighting, ceiling fan and an AC/heater to make your stay even more comfortable.
This is the perfect duplex for a larger family of four! The kids can do their thing in Cabin #5, while mom and dad can kick it old school next door in Cabin #6! So close, yet so NOT far enough away? Don't worry, we can get you set up in a much larger, more private cabin elsewhere on the property! Sorry kids, one day you'll understand! Unlike Duplex Cabin 3 and 4, Cabin 5 and 6 have their own separate bedrooms, plus a full kitchen. Similarly, all four duplex cabins have the TVs mounted in the bedrooms, so no couch action here! We're getting right down to business with a movie in bed!

RV Campsite #16 - The Amphitheater
Had an amazing time at camp site 16. Amazing perk was the water connection and electricity outlet. Toilet and shower is well maintained, however was not able to work the shower near us. Also take into account the noise from the road. Highly recommend staying here.

Cove #1 and 2 are quite spacious and tucked under the shade of large Oak trees, great for staying cool on hot days, maybe not so great if you need to recharge batteries with solar. Showers and toilets are a short walk away. All of the campsites aren't far from the main road so there is considerable road noise during the day, but it quiets down to almost none at night. There are so many stars visible after dark, it's magical. I didn't have the opportunity to meet the property manager, but I did notice him assisting other guests and the housekeeper, Janice watched out for me as a solo female camper, even bringing me leftovers from her Thanksgiving dinner. :)

Secluded, good for a family trip. Would recommend putting a grill as other campsites had one, but 16 did not.
Definitely look into the weather to take proper gear and all equipment needed.
Would come back if given the opportunity again.

The Cove#1: OakTree Shaded Campsite
The site was large and spacious, but unfortunately still much closer to the highway than I expected - there was significant road noise pretty much 9am-9pm. I didn't feel isolated from other campers, I could see and hear people at the nearby cabins, and their floodlights spilled into our campsite all night.
Also, at this price point, I expected nicer amenities - for instance, fire pits with built in grill grates to cook on, access to a dishwashing sink, or even just a complimentary bundle of firewood. Our fire pit was small and had no infrastructure to cook on, and was unfortunately positioned right on the boundary with the adjacent campsite, so it kind of defeated the spaciousness of the site.
On the bright side, the location was great (close to all the tourist attractions in the greater Julian area). The bathrooms were very clean as well.

The area is nice. The cove#2 was shaded which made is pleasant. There are other areas with better views if that's something you care about.
There was a place to start a fire in each spot, which is ideal to have a camp fire and sit around it.
There are restrooms and also showers. Restrooms are clean

The Perch - RV Parking
Great spot. Water and power hook up. Easy access. Short walk to the great bar at the bottom of the hill.
Only down point is it is located next to two windy roads. Sports cars and bikes use these roads over the weekend, so can sound at times like a F1 race!

Space 16 has a beautiful view of a meadow where cows graze. There is a convenient restaurant on the property, clean flush toilets and a shower nearby, and firewood for sale 2 miles away.

The view is superb! And the owner is a very nice person.
For back country, it’s close enough to the little town on Santa Ysabel for pie and sandwiches that grabbing those is an easy drive and well worth it.

Campground was clean, had amenities needed, & was taken care of - although it felt cozy you didn't feel like you were scrunched next to other campers and had breathing room. This was a quick overnight for early morning fishing at Lake Henshaw and will easily be where I go when I'm in the are from now on.

Blissful time. A bit of a mix up with someone else being in “my” spot on arrival but they sorted it out immediately and I was much happier with my revised spot (Lower Campground.) The view was breathtaking.

This sight was a great couple's getaway. We arrived shortly after sundown and we're greeted with some ice cold lemonade by Lana. She was very nice and helpful by showing us our sight and telling us about the area. We enjoyed staying the The Crossing campsite because it was just one staircase away from Josie's Hideout which was an amazing place to have some cold beer and listen to some live music. We plan on coming back with friends and trying different sites.

I was very pleased with the accommodations of the vintage RV. It was clean and had ample space, even though I was alone at the time. The area had a beautiful view of the lake and the surrounding lands with bovine. I would definitely recommend the Mountain Lodge to others.

We had a great experience here thanks to the new owner, who was incredibly kind, communicative, and accommodating. The site was peaceful, private, and perfect for a relaxing getaway.

My family and I had a great time camping at this site! The shady spots offered a cool breeze, which was a lifesaver on a hot weekend. We loved how convenient everything was, from the nearby outlets to the easily accessible and clean bathrooms and showers. The campground is also incredibly spacious, offering beautiful views of both the sunrise and sunset. While we could hear some traffic at night, the site still felt peaceful and was the perfect easy getaway. The host was fantastic and very responsive, even providing extra directions when needed.
Another big plus is the nearby lake, which is perfect for fishing, though it does require a separate entry fee since it's part of a nearby resort. There is also a small town close by with a market to stock up on any essentials.
