Shuyak Island State Park

In Alaska, distances are often measured in “air miles,” and Shuyak Island State Park is no exception. The island is 54 air miles away from Kodiak, and it has more sheltered interior waterways than any other spot in the Kodiak Archipelago. That means there’s tons of wildlife here, from seabirds (like puffins!) to whales, harbor seals, sea lions, Kodiak brown bear, and more. And, fun fact, there’s only one species of tree on the island: Sitka spruce. This tree covers the island thickly, and there aren’t a ton of hiking trails. Instead, explore the shorelines during low tides. Just watch out for changing weather conditions, since this remote place has rather temperamental weather patterns. Camping is a blast out here, too, as long as you’re prepared. Remember, help could be hours or days away if an emergency arises. Planning your trip will pay off tremendously!
