Overview

About

What’s not to love about the Donnelly Creek State Recreation Site? Spoiler alert: nothing. For starters, it’s considered to be the home of one of Alaska’s most scenic campgrounds…probably due to the expansive views of some of the tallest peaks in the Alaska Range. With all of that natural beauty, you’d expect a special place like this to be pretty darn crowded. But, wait for it…it's hardly ever crowded! There are about a dozen campsites to choose from, and you’ll love pitching your tent here after an action-packed day of exploring this remote slice of wilderness. Look out for moose, bear, porcupines, snowshoe hares, and tons of birdlife. If you’re really lucky, you may even see caribou.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Donnelly Creek State Recreation Site is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is most favorable for outdoor activities. Winter can be harsh and challenging, with limited access and extreme temperatures, making it less suitable for a visit unless you're prepared for cold-weather adventures.

Know before you go

  • Check weather conditions before your trip, as Alaska's weather can be unpredictable.
  • Be aware of wildlife in the area; carry bear spray and know how to use it.
  • Prepare for limited cell service; plan your route and communicate your plans in advance.
  • Bring insect repellent to combat the summer mosquitos.
  • Respect the natural environment by following Leave No Trace principles.
