The best forest glamping in Lewisville Lake

·

Fringed by parklands, swimming beaches, and shady woodlands, Lewisville Lake feels a world away from Dallas—despite being less than an hour from downtown. Getting on the water is easy, whether you want to launch your boat from one of five marinas or numerous boat ramps, rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard, or fish for bass, crappie, and catfish. Summer brings the crowds to the lake, with a host of parties and open-air events held around the lakeside, but the many campgrounds, RV parks, and lake-view cabin rentals are all available year-round.

In the early 1900’s an iconic red barn was built near the hilltop along the road between the old Mt. Zion community and Collinsville. Later in the 1900’s, the land was mostly abandoned by its owners, but not by the local fishermen! They knew its woodland fishing pond never dried up, and so was able to support a better population of fish. They also dumped a cornucopia of old motorcycles, cars and farm equipment in the front field. What else were you supposed to do with scrap metal in North Texas horse country? In 2002 the Holtzman family purchased the 35 acre tract of land. They dug a front pond for swimming and paddling, buried the scrap metal (although occasional bits of history still work their way up!), restored and brought horses back to the barn, and began consulting with local biologists about supporting native wildlife. April Holtzman launched Camp Tonkawa Outdoor Learning Center on the property to provide a beautiful, safe place for families to explore and learn about nature. Camp Tonkawa continues to host overnight and day camps with educational programing organized around various themes including: Native American culture, nature awareness, basic camping skills, primitive survival, organic gardening, herbology, outdoor cooking, western days, and horsemanship. We also host field trips and frequently conduct Girl Scout journeys for all levels in the "It's Your Planet, Love it!" series. Due to Covid-19, which limited working with groups for our educational programing, we joined Hip Camp where families who could isolate in nature together on our property.

Learn more about this land:The 1959 Imperial Villa is one of the largest and most luxurious trailers produced by Spartan Aircraft Co. This fully-restored vintage park model (10'x45', triple axle) offers all the comforts of home with amazing original mid-century modern furnishings. Step back in time and experience the beauty and tranquility of simpler days on our 11-acre, mostly-wooded homesite. Constructed of aircraft aluminum, the all-original interior is birch accented by walnut and brass. Almost all the furnishings are period pieces, fascinating to see and experience -- like entering a hands-on museum from the 1950s. Nestled in the trees and surrounded on all sides by curtained windows, the interior living space has an open, yet cozy feeling. There's a full-sized bathtub/shower, a full-sized & fully equipped kitchen (though it is not fully stocked with food), an on-demand hot water heater, and a two-ton heat pump which thermostatically controls the climate.

The best forest glamping in Lewisville Lake guide

Where to go

West Shore

Parks, campgrounds, and recreation areas dot the west coast of Lewisville Lake, drawing large crowds on summer weekends. If boat parties sound like your idea of fun, head down to Party Cove by Westlake Park on a Friday or Saturday evening. Alternatively, escape the crowds at the rustic campsites of Sycamore Bend or practice your swing at one of the inland golf courses.

East Shore

If you prefer lake views and brisk hikes to partying and picnicking, head over to the east shore. Hidden Cove Park and Wynnward Park have wildlife-filled wetlands and scenic nature trails, among them the popular Tribute Shoreline Nature Trail, or you can play golf along the Stewart Peninsula. As for camping, there’s a choice of cabins, RV sites, and a bunkhouse at Hidden Cove.

North Shore

The north shore of the lake forks off into peace-sign-shaped fingers, where you can paddle around secluded coves and cruise past picturesque lakefront villas. There are no campgrounds here, but if you’re looking for a challenge, you can hike, paddle, or horseback ride through the 39-mile Greenbelt Corridor, which connects Lake Lewisville to nearby Ray Roberts Lake.

South Shore

The LLELA Nature Preserve hugs the south shore of Lewisville Lake, where walking and kayaking trails lead the way around scenic wetlands, lakeside forests, and prairies. There’s a campground within the preserve, or you can pitch your tent or park your RV at Stewart Creek Park, a good choice for hikers and bikers, or Lake Park, which has a swimming area
