From U.S. Highway 550 (mile marker 112.5), you will see the National Park sign, drive south on County Road 7900 for 5 miles.
After 5 miles (the road comes to a “T”) you will see another National Park sign, on the right hand side. Turn right on County Road 7950. You cannot turn left. (If you go straight, that will take you to Pueblo Pintado).
Drive 3 miles on County Road 7950. The pavement will end. On the right hand side you will see a sign that says "Dry Camp".
THE CAMPGROUND IS ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE. There will be a sign that reads: “Horsethief Campground”. In front of the short road to the Campground.
At the end of the short road to the campground is: a large portable building, and 2 other buildings. We apologize that the road is a little uneven, but we are looking to improve this real soon. You are welcome to park inside or outside the gated area.
Horse-Thief Campground is an upcoming camp; located on 5 acres of land and more, for campers to enjoy. In a quiet; serene, beautiful landscape area of the Dine Nation.
With beautiful sunrises; sunsets and night sky is out of this world. There are trails in which visitors may walk or bike, as well as a Look Out Point. Horse-Thief is currently a Dry Camp with no Electricity or running water however generators are welcome. There is one portable restroom.
P.S. If you have already paid on Hipcamp, you do not need to pay again. However, please sign the Waiver provided. With the war going on across the country and gas prices on the rise; if you we would like to save a little money instead of making a reservation on Hipcamp, you can pay for the fees upon arrival with cash, check or Zelle. We are a dry dispersed campground with plenty of room.

This was a great alternative to Gallo campground if you want to visit Chaco. We had a camper and so being in a dry camp was fine for us. We drove out on the property under a tree with some great views. There are other trees on the property to drive to that people were staying at also. The dark night star lit sky was incredible! It was quiet and a good place to come back to before and after visiting Chaco. Be prepared for a 30 minute drive on a dirt road that is very bumpy. We did see a lot of wild horses on the drive in and out of Chaco which made it. Yolanda was very nice and helpful and said that they are hoping to get water and electric out there soon.

It’s very peaceful and cozy. My cousin and I had a last minute runaway and we ended up here. Amenities were great too! The scenery is amazing and calming. Definitely staying again. My dog loved it too 🐶 Kudos to dog friendly places! Would be super cute to have dog treats!

This spot was a dream for me. Cabin is comfy but doesn’t feel too small. Master bed is truly wonderful. Adjustable and with a dreamy mattress.
We spent most of the time on the porch painting and reading and playing fetch with our labradoodle, who was in heaven.
We were mostly unaware of neighbors or much nearby activity. Merlin app caught so many new birds.
I hope to return soon.

This was such an amazing experience! You enter along an unpaved road and are basically in the middle of scrubland as far as you can see. We heard coyotes in the distance at night, the moon rose *orange* on the horizon, and the stars were incredible. So peaceful, and very close to Chaco Canyon. Thank you so much for hosting us!

This is a place to stay on the way to Chaco Canyon, and that’s it. Even knowing that, prepare yourself for austerity before you pull in. It is NOTHING but a flat dirt lot filled with rocks, nails (?) and some broken glass. But it’s flat, there’s a porta-john nearby, and some odd bits of construction materials that can be useful for holding things down while you setup your tent in hideous wind.
If you’re arriving on motorcycle note that there is some loose sand on the way down, but it’s not deep. If it rains ALL night long (like it did for us) the road back out is not too muddy.’

We had the place to ourselves. Arrived around 8pm then enjoyed a lovely sunset while setting up camp by the lonely tree. There is also a fire ring at the tree. Saw the wild horses come through around midnight. Pit toilet was much appreciated in the morning.

Great access to Chaco Canyon, and easy to find with good instructions. Tent spots are a little fuzzy, but we didn’t have any trouble finding a spot that worked. Appreciated the port-a-potty.

We loved this location. Perfect for all the sites we wanted to see. It’s quiet and remote. Surrounded by 360 degrees of horizon makes for amazing sunsets. We added two more nights for our stay in this beautiful landscape. Thank you To our hosts, Yolanda and Wayne.
