From U.S. Highway 550 (mile marker 112.5), you will see the National Park sign, drive south on County Road 7900 for 5 miles. After 5 miles (the road comes to a “T”) you will see another National Park sign, on the right hand side. Turn right on County Road 7950. You cannot turn left. (If you go straight, that will take you to Pueblo Pintado). Drive 3 miles on County Road 7950. The pavement will end. On the right hand side you will see a sign that says "Dry Camp". THE CAMPGROUND IS ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE. There will be a sign that reads: “Horsethief Campground”. In front of the short road to the Campground. At the end of the short road to the campground is: a large school building, and 2 other buildings. We apologize that the road is a little uneven, but we are looking to improve this real soon. You are welcome to park inside or outside the gated area. Horse-Thief Campground is an upcoming camp; located on 5 acres of land and more, for campers to enjoy. In a quiet; serene, beautiful landscape area of the Dine Nation. With beautiful sunrises; sunsets and night sky is out of this world. There are trails in which visitors may walk or bike, as well as a Look Out Point. Horse-Thief is currently a Dry Camp with no Electricity or running water however generators are welcome. There is one portable restroom. P.S. If you have already paid on Hipcamp, you do not need to pay again. However, please sign the Waiver provided. Thank you very much! We hope you enjoy your stay. 😊

A peaceful and serene camping site. We've built a Zen Garden at the top of the hill. This is a very rustic place to camp up in the Central Mountains of New Mexico. The Stargazing view is stunning! About an hour from Gallup, near the Wolf Sanctuary. All the Land of Enchantment has to offer in the Spring, Summer and fall! A sacred place where your family can go car camping. This was a great alternative to Gallo campground if you want to visit Chaco. We had a camper and so being in a dry camp was fine for us. We drove out on the property under a tree with some great views. There are other trees on the property to drive to that people were staying at also. The dark night star lit sky was incredible! It was quiet and a good place to come back to before and after visiting Chaco. Be prepared for a 30 minute drive on a dirt road that is very bumpy. We did see a lot of wild horses on the drive in and out of Chaco which made it. Yolanda was very nice and helpful and said that they are hoping to get water and electric out there soon.

This was such an amazing experience! You enter along an unpaved road and are basically in the middle of scrubland as far as you can see. We heard coyotes in the distance at night, the moon rose *orange* on the horizon, and the stars were incredible. So peaceful, and very close to Chaco Canyon. Thank you so much for hosting us!

This is a place to stay on the way to Chaco Canyon, and that’s it. Even knowing that, prepare yourself for austerity before you pull in. It is NOTHING but a flat dirt lot filled with rocks, nails (?) and some broken glass. But it’s flat, there’s a porta-john nearby, and some odd bits of construction materials that can be useful for holding things down while you setup your tent in hideous wind. If you’re arriving on motorcycle note that there is some loose sand on the way down, but it’s not deep. If it rains ALL night long (like it did for us) the road back out is not too muddy.’

We had the place to ourselves. Arrived around 8pm then enjoyed a lovely sunset while setting up camp by the lonely tree. There is also a fire ring at the tree. Saw the wild horses come through around midnight. Pit toilet was much appreciated in the morning.

This was a perfect spot to use as base camp for exploring both Chaco Canyon and Bisti Badlands. Follow the directions provided by the host! Come in from 550 on the North side of town. Other routes your GPS may show you (particularly when coming from the south) will have you on washboard road. The site was exactly as described. Level, dry camp location just as the road to Chaco becomes gravel.

We're grateful that Wayne and Yolanda made their land available like this. It is so convenient to Chaco and saved us either hauling our trailer up that road or driving miles further for our day trip into the park. The space is super easy in and out. We had our choice of places to park. It was quiet and dark at night. Wayne, is warm and friendly, he even came by to chat one evening. We really appreciated getting to learn about him and his family. He clearly has a strong connection to the land and is working hard to make a living in a place where that could be tough. Some reviewers complain about the cost and lack of services...we were happy to spend our money for an easy, convenient place to stay. And to support his vision as he continues to develop this camping area.
