They also get regular care and feed and so are VERY happy. You will see and probably interact with the horses if you wish. They are guaranteed to come closer if you have treats like carrots and apples slices. Our quiet county road used to be the main road along the river. A hundred years ago it was called "Shanty Road". The shacks that were along it housed workers that harvested food from farms in the river bottom. The only evidence of those shacks now is perrenial flowers growing in unusual places. The area is inhabited by professionals working in nearby towns and cities. In fact there are only five homes along our 1.5 mile section of Copps Chapel Road. The native Americans who used this area did so because of the great diversity of wildlife and availability of water. Also the view is amazing in all directions. Was using this ridge top encampment for security, or just because the view is so satisfying? The Missouri River is on the far side of the bottoms now, but has been very close historically. There is also a large spring flowing from a cave nearby. Witness the flint chips when you walk through our barn lot. You are likely to see a broken stone tool that was once worked on by a native American. These river hills are composed of soils blown in from the end of the last ice age. Being near the river, erosion has cut down the surrounding area making the scenic topography associated with Missouri River valleys and river hills.

Shelby Farm was very relaxing and tucked away just far enough to feel the solitude with nature. No road noise, horns beeping, or distant sirens. Great spot to just sit back and take it all in. Doug was very responsive and although we didn’t get a chance to meet, I felt he went out of his way to make sure my stay met expectations.

Amazing views along with beautiful horses! I enjoyed my stay at the Shelby Farm Horse Retirement Stables! Such beautifully maintained grounds and an extremely nice host! Truly an amazing helper Johnny who was a life saver ❤️ we needed a jump and he was there to help! Doug and Brenda are very responsive and helped me get my questions answered swiftly! We really enjoyed our stay and especially felt at home. If your looking for a quiet place to camp with a beautiful view, come here! We can't wait to come again!

Very quiet and pretty place to stay! We got there very late and it was pretty easy to find. Easy for a class B RV to get to. Doug and Brenda were so nice and accommodating! There were other campers there, but it was still peaceful. Would definitely stay again!

This place is a hidden gem. Water and electricity on site were easy and accessible. Horses were friendly and the view was amazing. Owner met us on site and was extremely nice to talk with and accommodating. If we have to go back to Columbia we will hang out here.

I had a great stay at Brenda and Doug's horse camp. The setting was very picturesque and peaceful, and Brenda was welcoming. It was about a 15 minute drive from I-70. Traveling with my dog across the country, it was nice to have a place to camp that my dog could be off leash. On future cross country trips, I will definitely stay here again.

A safe and beautiful horse farm! I appreciated meeting both Doug and Brenda and they were very considerate of my privacy and sense of safety. I was the only person camping there when I went, there may be fewer sites than the Hipcamp indicates. Sites are all within view of one another with not much privacy, but this was a safe and pretty place to stop over for a night on my solo road trip. Thank you.

Our visit was very brief. We pulled in late in a thunderstorm and only stayed for a few hours. Our power cord was laid out for us and it seemed like a very nice place. Very quiet, level site. I would recommend.

This was a wonderful place to camp. Waking up to the horses, barn and rolling hills was just beautiful. It was nice and peaceful and felt very safe. It took us about 15 minutes after getting off of I 70 to get there. We were the only ones there. They were super easy to reach with questions. Doug came to talk with us the morning that we left and he was super kind. I so appreciate all these wonderful people who share their land with us. I would stop in here again without hesitation.

We were able to locate the camp spot by following provided directions. Once set up, the location was so peaceful with the barn shelter nearby in the pasture and 8 horses hanging out, wandering about. We enjoyed the serenity the location offered but would have enjoyed meeting the host had they come around. Perhaps next time!

Very quiet location. Great hosts. The horses were a treat and they liked getting carrots and apples for their treats. Two tips: 1) This is a horse ranch, be prepared to have a vigorous battle with flies and 2) Both AT&T and Verizon cell service were sketchy. I had to break out the Starlink to get reliable connectivity. About a mile and a half of gravel roads to arrive.

Selby horse farm was an enchanting experience. It is the type of place you stay and it gives food to your soul. The landscape is beautiful, the horses are a dream, and Doug, Brenda and Johnny were warm and kind. We walked the trails, saw the old bridge, walked through wildflowers to get the the river, and met one of the neighbors out walking her goats. Time moves slower here just as it should. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer.

We ended up staying at site 2 by mistake but appreciate Doug’s grace in letting us stay. All the sites are clearly marked so if you come at night just trust that yours is there somewhere! We got Doug’s permission to feed the horses chopped up apples and my city girl heart just sang. Sunset 10/10, star gazing 10/10. Port-a potty was there and I think I saw a fire pit at each spot and there was a ton of firewood when we were there. Johnny Fox was a very enjoyable ambassador and his friendliness was another big highlight of the trip!
