Where to go

Downtown Kansas City

Just 30 minutes west of Oak Grove is Kansas City, Missouri’s largest city. Visitors won’t run out of things to do—or barbecue to sample. Private RV parks and glamping rentals are found downtown and across the numerous suburbs that ring the city. Nearby public campgrounds can be found at Weston Bend State Park and Watkins Mill State Park, both offering scenery, history, and outdoor recreation close to the city.

Lake Jacomo, Longview Lake, and Blue Springs Lake

Water, water everywhere. That’s what you’ll find at Lake Jacomo and Blue Springs Lake, just 20 minutes west of Oak Grove near the town of Blue Springs. Stay busy boating, paddling, fishing, or swimming—or relax on the shores. Three public campgrounds offer campsites for tents and RVs, with everything from primitive sites to full hookups.

Lawrence, Kansas

Head west to Lawrence to find fun in this energetic college town, the home of the University of Kansas. The hip downtown area caters to college kids, but visitors of all ages will find shops, galleries, and restaurants to explore. Trek through a surprising number of museums or venture to Clinton State Park for a natural boost. Private RV parks, glamping rentals, and public campgrounds abound, with a state park and Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds found along the shores of Clinton Lake.

When to go

Spring and fall offer moderate temperatures and their own unique season shows from Mother Nature, as wildflowers bloom and the woodlands turn green in the spring before turning orange, gold, and brown through fall. Summer is humid and hot, but it’s a popular time to hit the regional lakes or to explore shady state parks.
