Welcome to Big Branch Apiary, a 50 acre honey and blueberry farm north of Lake Pontchartrain. We're bounded by the Big Branch Wildlife Reserve to the south and a Rails to Trails bike path on the north. We are 3 miles from Lacombe to the east, 4 miles from Mandeville to the west, about 3 miles from Fountainbleu State Park, and an hour from New Orleans. Most of the farm is a mix of hardwood forest and wetlands. Desert Bayou and East Branch Bayou meander across the property. The farm has deer, foxes, bobcats, owls, fireflies, otters, raccoons, turtles, and, well, about anything common to the wilds of the Gulf South. This includes a litany of snakes, mosquitoes, and deer flies in season. About 8 acres are used to raise poultry, bees and organically farmed blueberries. Overall, the land feels primordial and pristine. We are a designated Monarch Waystation and in the spring and fall see many migrating butterflies. We cultivate a lot of flowers so almost year round you can see butterflies in profusion. We are part of the USDAs Conservation Stewardship Program, concentrating on protecting and increasing habitat for animals and pollinators. Pets are welcome but please leash them. Campfires are allowed except on rare occasions. You can hunt for deadfalls in the woods on the farm, or we can provide firewood for a small fee. Our honey, fresh eggs, and homemade sourdough can be purchased as well. This is a rustic situation: think dry camping, outdoor (heated) shower, and outhouses. We have a tiny treehouse, an A-frame, a glamping tent, and several places to pitch a tent. The farm is pretty secure--someone is on-site most of the time, it's gated, and there are security cameras at access points. But it is a farm in a rural community--you may hear roosters crow, sheep bleat, dogs bark, and the sounds of owls, hawks, coyotes, and other native wildlife. We use the money from these bookings to fund the community food access work that we do. The property is an old homestead recently reclaimed and being brought back to life after many years abandoned. Early 1800s Bulgarian immigrants started a little community here called Stein. The old railroad used to pass through and there are alot of artifacts scattered throughout the property. We are in the process of cleaning up the old cabin built in late 1800s suprisingly still standing. The hardwood forest has a creek running through that is virtually untouched and home to wildlife of all kinds. Birds and wildlife of all kinds have a home here and no hunting allowed. Some trails have been cut and there are some natural trails for exploring the property through the hardwoods and campers are welcome to make new ones. A spring fed pond is great for fishing or just relaxing under the majestic live oaks. If Mushroom foraging is your thing you are in luck after a nice rain. This place had the best of southeast Louisiana and truly is a hidden gem. We are still in the clearing process so there are alot of projects going on but we definitely have some cool spots to pitch a tent. Host is on property in shipping container and willing to make accommodations as needed as we have electricity but are pretty much off the grid.. do not have an outdoor bathroom but could set something up with little effort. Have running water for solar shower or creek bath if you'd rather. Since we are still rebuilding there are some piles of lumber and things that may be unsafe for small children and animals. I have 2 dogs on the property with me but are fenced and friendly. If you have any questions just ask!

Weekend Trip to Creekside Farm Co.

We had a magnificent stay! We booked at the very last second because our previous reservation fell through suddenly - and it was a blessing in disguise! This property is so big and full of adventures and projects to look at. Special shout-out to the fishing pond!! My friends and I barely know anything about fishing and we discovered a lifelong hobby!!! The hosts were also incredibly kind & patient & generous with their time/care. From the moment we arrived it felt warm & comfortable. Also the farm dogs are so so so so lovable. We actually miss them - Mo will play fetch for hours and bring you cool trinkets ❤️

Weekend Trip to Heavenly Grace Farm

We arrived Friday & had a fun time till we left Sunday. The property, the pond, & Ms. Erica were great. Ms. Erica even helped us out with some extra sleeping bags when the night time temps dropped lower than expected. From fishing in the pond to seeing all the animals, our grand-kids enjoyed & learned a lot on the farm setting. We’ll certainly add it to our “let’s go back” list!

Great spot! The site had a nice flattened area for my tent a little into a wooded area. I was able to hang my hammock. And the spot is right in the edge of the walking trails which was lovely. I also had some car troubles and Jordan was very responsive and helpful!

Such a great time! Alicia was a great host. Her husband CJ was friendly from the start and answered our questions. Lovely campground area. Sites are far away enough to feel private but close enough if we needed anything. Bathroom is convenient. Quiet and peaceful, we didn’t mind the early rooster crow and it’s probably not heard unless you’re closer to the animals. We didn’t want to leave. Looking forward to next time! :)

It has several sites that are good size to the right as you go in. Sign says park yourself and let them know which site. There are 5 sites to the left that are tight. As no one was there we parked in one of those sites. Gravel site was very unlevel but electric, water and sewer worked well. Was quiet where we were. Note: last site does not have sewer.

They're small but nice bathroom facility worked well for somebody without a bathroom in their camper. It was clean and rarely used. A real bonus in this kind of Campground. Very reasonable!

7 nights at Pelican Gardens

Mark has cultivated a true gem of a space in Algier's Point. I stayed at the tent site for two weeks. It was most days only a 10 minute drive across the bridge for work in the NOLA CBD. I was surrounded by a living garden and it was fantastic. Mark is a lovely human, and it's reflected in his intentional community space. There was also a hot shower and a kitchen I could use. I could not have stumbled upon a better place to be. Thank you, Mark. I'll be back.

Good little piece of property with many options for Tent, Vehicle or rooftop camping. Host is cool, offered to cut some limbs if necessary but wasn’t needed… quiet and peaceful. Good stargazing spot!. Camping creekside next time.

Great spot! The garden is beautyfull & peaceful, especially for being so close to everything. The shower was better than a lot of houses I've stayed in, so yay for that. Definitely a great experience. My favorite was hearing the boat horns & a marching band practicing at the coast guard campus nearby. Love being right on the levee/river.... Thnx!

We stayed in the RV spot and had a nice time here! We were only here for an evening and left early the next morning, but we felt safe with the gate during the night and the bathroom was convenient and clean! Garden was nice too. Thanks for a good place to stay!

The RV space was premo for my vehicle & gear; there was ample space to pitch a tent and beat the Nola heat. Mark communicated transparently about the space and made accessibility easy. The semi-outdoor bathroom/shower was a nice touch - plenty of hot water with the on demand water heater. Mark & co. were super friendly and gave a lot of insights into the little fabulous cultural tidbits that Nola is full of. Sunday brunch was so much fun! Pelican gardens are such a beautiful forest of food and tropical plants 🌿 this was exactly the greenspace and vibe that I was seeking for camping, all while being a 20 minute walk to the Algiers ferry and close to the French Quarter & downtown. Riding the ferry daily and using the RTA Jazzy pass was a total breeze 🏖

Weekend Trip to Magic River Campground

It was lovely. I was worried aboot lack of peace because it was near 2 highways, but it was super peaceful. Didn’t hear any vehicles. I saw deer and squirrels several times the few nights I stayed. There was plenty of space to walk around and explore. I loved that my dogs were able to be free once we were on trails away from others. The host was great, very helpful and kind. It’s a very safe place. They love their community, (something similar to what I’ve been aligning with- soul tribe eco-village). I really did love and appreciate the 5 mile speed limit, even if I had to keep remembering it. The slimy/residue feeling on my skin from the shower/sink I assume is soft water and would take some getting used to. All was great.
