In the 1840's there was a trading post on the property known as Lick Skillet because the owner would set the pans out at night for the dogs to lick.  Today, we call it Fanthorn Forest and it's our dream, our haven and our home.  We love sharing our farm with others and allowing them the same experience of peace and tranquility we get from the land.Learn more about this land:Located only 50 miles SE of Kansas City, MO!  We have woods and pasture with Settle's Ford Wildlife area (fishing and hiking available) 1/4 mile away. Camping is primitive with only an outhouse and no shower facilities. There are MANY thorn trees, so hikers must have proper footwear.  Fire ring, wood and a grate for cooking are provided.  Livestock encounters are also available with owners in attendance.  All proceeds are put back in the farm to care for the animals and the land.  RV's are allowed, but we do not have any hook ups available and they are not allowed in the woods.  Parking area is at the end of the driveway for both cars and RV's.  We love kids and will provide lawn darts or any other games we have available if requested.  Please visit our website at fangthornforest.com for more information.

There is also the Rustic Duck, a wonderful restaurant and art gallery, just a short walk away. Enjoy our little lake! This peaceful countryside cabin has a nice little lake just right for fishing just steps from the front door from which folks have caught catfish, bluegill, crappie, and bass. The Appleton City Lake does not allow swimming. It does not allow boats with motors. However, you could bring a kayak if you wanted. We have a community fire pit and picnic tables too. The grill is electric with pellets. We provide firewood for the pit and pellets for the grill. Guest access We are a little over one mile down a level gravel road and just 3.5 miles total from the small town of Appleton City where we have a little restaurant, Caseys, a very nice little grocery store (closes 7 pm), coffee house (mon-sat 8 am-11 am), and Dollar General (closes 9 pm). I live nearby on the property and am available to greet you when you arrive. Other things to note Appleton City is a small town. If you are coming in late, you may want to stop on the way to pick up food. We have a few stores in town, but some folks are caught off guard to find out the stores close early. But Caseys has sandwiches and assorted quick items and is open until 11 pm.

In the 1840's there was a trading post on the property known as Lick Skillet because the owner would set the pans out at night for the dogs to lick.  Today, we call it Fanthorn Forest and it's our dream, our haven and our home.  We love sharing our farm with others and allowing them the same experience of peace and tranquility we get from the land.Learn more about this land:Located only 50 miles SE of Kansas City, MO!  We have woods and pasture with Settle's Ford Wildlife area (fishing and hiking available) 1/4 mile away. Camping is primitive with only an outhouse and no shower facilities. There are MANY thorn trees, so hikers must have proper footwear.  Fire ring, wood and a grate for cooking are provided.  Livestock encounters are also available with owners in attendance.  All proceeds are put back in the farm to care for the animals and the land.  RV's are allowed, but we do not have any hook ups available and they are not allowed in the woods.  Parking area is at the end of the driveway for both cars and RV's.  We love kids and will provide lawn darts or any other games we have available if requested.  Please visit our website at fangthornforest.com for more information.

All the kitchen accessories you may need, comfy bedding, and plush towels, for the full bathroom with shower, have been provided. The little lake is steps from your front door where you can enjoy a little fishing too. The space Along with a well-appointed inside, we have chairs on the front porch for lake viewing and a grill for outdoor cooking too. There is also the Rustic Duck, a wonderful restaurant and art gallery, just a short walk away. Enjoy our little lake! This peaceful countryside cabin has a nice little lake just right for fishing just steps from the front door from which folks have caught catfish, bluegill, crappie, and bass. The Appleton City Lake does not allow swimming. It does not allow boats with motors. However, you could bring a kayak if you wanted. We have a community fire pit and picnic tables too. The grill is electric with pellets. We provide firewood for the pit and pellets for the grill. Guest access We are a little over one mile down a level gravel road and just 3.5 miles total from the small town of Appleton City where we have a little restaurant, Caseys, a very nice little grocery store (closes 7 pm), coffee house (mon-sat 8 am-11 am), and Dollar General (closes 9 pm). I live nearby on the property and am available to greet you when you arrive. Other things to note Appleton City is a small town. If you are coming in late, you may want to stop on the way to pick up food. We have a few stores in town, but some folks are caught off guard to find out the stores close early. But Caseys has sandwiches and assorted quick items and is open until 11 pm.

We showed up with 4 kids between the ages of 5 and 12, and he pulled no stops entertaining them, including walking his horse down to our campsite for the kids to pet. I stayed in The Stevie glamping yurt at Lake Georgia Sue Campground, and it was absolutely perfect. The view was beautiful, the area was peaceful and quiet, and everything was spotless. The entire property is stunning, with horses, goats, mini pigs, and other animals that add to the overall experience. The lake itself is gorgeous, and the residents and employees were incredibly friendly and accommodating throughout my stay. It truly feels like a little hidden gem. Location-wise, it’s great too—Jesse James Cave is just a short drive away, and there’s a local diner nearby with amazing food. If you’re visiting in the fall, the scenery is especially breathtaking. Highly recommend staying here, especially in The Stevie!

This place is amazing! My best friend and I decided to have a girls weekend and camp out. The hosts were so nice and accommodating. The property was absolutely beautiful! We went towards the end of October and it was still stunning! Tons of animals that are so used to people and dogs that they ignored our dogs thinking they were big and tough. Base Camp was my first experience with my new-to-me camper and Hipcampers and it was a great experience! Base Camp is set up very well...easy to get in and out of - especially for anyone with little experience. The pull through spots are very wide. Although I didn't get to use the free to use bicycles or canoes on this trip I did check them out and they are very well taken care of. The Camp was peaceful and although it's just off the roadway it was very quiet with very little road noise. I will be back!

I just can’t say enough wonderful things about this experience. The hosts are so kind and caring. The camping spot was in a clearing with a short walk across a bridge. There was a great fire pit and Layne kept it stocked with wood. He even provided a gas torch that made starting fires easy and fun. In addition to this beautiful, quiet camping spot….a nearby fairy cove was beautifully situated which made for hours of reading. In the middle of the pasture, a gated area with additional space for hanging out with the animals was a two minute walk from my camping spot. All weekend long, I enjoyed getting to know all the animals. Each animal has a name and a personality. I loved the horses but quickly began to appreciate the cattle, alpacas, llama, pig, cats and dogs. The rescued animals are healthy, well-fed and loved. It was the most restful and unique camping experience. The owners added some great fall/Halloween decorations that thrills the kid in all of us. Kids would really benefit from this environment. I had no problem getting cell service but wouldn’t have minded either way. The sunsets were especially gorgeous. The hosts left me to myself but didn’t mind when I had questions- they are so smart. I enjoyed my stay so much I added another day on. I got to take my gravel bike out and explore all the nearby areas. Being able to bike was an added bonus. I am already excited to bring my grandson back!

The paddle boats and provided life jackets were a fun bonus, and we loved having bikes available and easy access to the nearby bike trail. A couple of things could be improved: the grounds could use more frequent mowing, and a larger trash receptacle for campers would be helpful. Overall, it’s a peaceful and enjoyable spot, and we’d definitely come back!

Weekend Trip to Lake Georgia-Sue
This is the kind of place you sorta don't want to tell anyone else about--an absolute gem of a spot you want to keep to yourself! The Stevie spot was a perfectly secluded get away tucked into the woods but we were able take just a couple of steps to enjoy the beautiful lake, trails and amazing scenery.. I came to relax, but found myself almost rushing around with my camera to take some really great shots of my dogs all weekend. Just the tent itself was so cool! The spot was very well stocked with thoughtful amenities and a plush cozy bed that was more comfortable than most AirBNB beds I've stayed in. We were able to fully relax and even our dogs got to enjoy an unplugged weekend under the stars without another soul in sight. The Stevie was the perfect spot for my birthday weekend!

If you are looking for a rustic place to stay where you can be secluded, this place is for you. The goats and horses were so fun to watch. The property has great potential and they are actively working on improvements. The bed in The Stevie was probably the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in…and I’m not exaggerating. The hosts were great and had a fire going for me in my site when I arrived. I’d love to come back when I have more time.
