As a full-time host and tour guide, I take pride is giving people the best experiences possible while on island! Our properties are cozy and provide everything you will need being your home away from home while on vacation! Learn more about this land: The ultimate local experience while providing comforts to make your stay enjoyable. Live in traditional Hawaiian style homes! For guests unfamiliar with the Big Island, it is not like the other islands people travel to. If Oahu is more Americanized, the Big Island is still more of a Polynesian Island. Our property allows guests to enjoy a genuine local experience. The cabins have power and endless hot water. All water on property is rainwater harvested from our roof! At night your ears will be greeted by the forest with sounds of coqui frogs. Many people love them 🐸 Please search for Bathing Suits and Rain Boots on YouTube to find a video of what our property sounds like at night. Our channel also features videos of tours we offer. More to be uploaded, check back often! Our tours include off the beaten path adventures ranging from sunrises and geothermal Kings baths, to prawn hunting to hikes that lead to waterfalls! They are all local gems that you will not find online or offered by any other tour guide agency. We are updating our ig @bathingsuitsandrainboots regularly with footage from adventures as well! Beach gear such as surf boards, boogie boards and snorkel gear is also available. There is a detailed welcome packet with a variety of mostly free but some paid must see/do activities on the island! There are a total of 4 cabins on the one acre lot. The owners are on property, other guests may or may not be here as well. There is a dog Valentine, two outdoor cats named Ghost and Tomi, and chickens/ducks. Each cabin has a queen mattress. We rent both cabins out for larger groups. Jungle massages are available on site starting at $100 for the hour. Please note the main image capturing a lava cliff sunrise is not visible from the cabin. It is about a 30-40 minute drive from us 🌊 ☀️ 🌋 We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. Winters are also rainy season so if traveling to the Big Island in the winter, I suggest some light layers for warmth, a raincoat and rain boots.

The Kikala Waterfall Lodge at the Mauna Kea Cloudforest Bioreserve is a lodge nested in a botanical garden and farm dedicated to the preservation of the world's plant biodiversity. Situated on the southeast facing flanks of Mauna Kea overlooking Hilo Bay and the Hamakua Coast, the bioreserve benefits of a unique climate where the lowland rainforest climate zone (Koeppen climate Zone Af) overlaps with the oceanic temperate mountain zone of Mauna Kea (Koeppen Climate Zone Cfb). The result is a cool and wet climate zone that supports many of the world's endangered palms and conifers. The bioreserve features 14 acres of riverfront Cloud forest. The Kikala river runs through the middle of the bioreserve, so Kikala Waterfall Lodge guests on the bioreserve have private exclusive access to prime waterfalls and swimming holes. The Cloudforest bioreserve isn't just home to botanical wonders, Hawaiian native hawks and many other beautiful Hawaiian birds like to nest in the cloudforest. The lodge community center features a Zendo that can support a contemplative yoga and meditation practice. We are an off-grid intentional community in the rainforest of East Hawaii in the Puna district. We have acres of tropical fruit trees, clumping bamboo, bananas, and other plants. We have about 20 different tropical breeze houses, which are hand-made, screened-in structures nestled into the forest along walking trails. We're at the end of a 3-mile-long unpaved road, so we are very secluded and have little outside noise. We are not a bed-and-breakfast, we are not a farm, we are not a place looking to rent cabins — we are an intentional community and Permaculture homestead whose primary mission is healing, activating, and living our holistic hearts in a multigenerational, bonded community. We are growing a holistic culture and creating a beautiful world together. We want to share this place and find partners in our mission/play/joy (both short and long term). We have a men's dorm and a women's dorm and breezehouses for couples and families. We do allow camping, but we rarely have it happen. People usually sleep in our buildings. We have two communal kitchens, a living room, dining rooms, communal showers, and lots of space to explore nature.

Lush jungle in the middle of the 2018 lava flow. Experience the magic of driving through a solidified lava river, admiring large steaming cinder cones and being submerged by the green of the tropical forest. This is a place to be in and apart of nature, far from the conventional world, at an off grid family farm. We provide a bath house with flush toilets and a hot water shower. This is a rustic style farm in recovery from the 2018 lava flow. We are considered a miracle plot that was untouched by lava that surrounded us. Because of the 2018 Lava Eruption we do not have a GPS location address to our farm. Once you get to the GPS address provided, you're going to continue onto where the pavement meets black lava. Drive up towards the gate where we will be in our car to meet you and escort you out to our property through private land access. It's a real unique adventure!

Pono Malu Way Farm

11. Pono Malu Way Farm

3.9mi from Nanawale Estates · 1 site
Welcome to Pono Malu Way Farm, a simple off-grid rainforest stay tucked into the lush jungle of lower Puna on Hawaii Island. "Pono" reflects balance and right relationship, and that is the spirit of this place. This space is designed for travelers seeking nature, quiet, simplicity, and a more grounded experience away from resorts and busy tourist areas. The structure is a large screened greenhouse with a tin roof that allows you to fully experience the sounds, rain, breeze, and atmosphere of the tropical rainforest around you. The site includes running water, a basic kitchen setup, a camp cook stove, a propane griddle, one solar-powered light, limited solar electricity with a single outlet for small devices, and a separate shower house with hot water. Sleeping arrangements can accommodate up to 10 guests, with two queen-size beds, six cots, and a sizable couch. The space works well for families, couples, and small groups comfortable with shared, rustic, off-grid living. This is not a luxury accommodation or polished glamping resort. It is a raw and evolving eco-homestead surrounded by jungle, lava rock, tropical plants, and the living rhythms of the rainforest. Guests should expect mud, rain, insects, coqui frogs, changing weather, and the occasional gecko visitor. Neighboring homes are nearby, as is common in this part of Puna. Our family's vision is to thoughtfully develop this land into a functional off-grid homestead with fruit trees, gardens, eco-friendly systems, additional structures, and improved ecological infrastructure over time. Hosting guests helps support this ongoing development. We welcome respectful travelers who appreciate nature, sustainability, homesteading, and slower living. If you're looking for a peaceful jungle experience and enjoy simple off-grid living, we would love to host you at Pono Malu Way Farm.

Pulelehua Gardens Off-Grid Cabin

13. Pulelehua Gardens Off-Grid Cabin

4.4mi from Nanawale Estates · 1 site
Experience the tranquil magic that is East Hawaii. Pulelehua is Hawaiian for butterfly and they are plentiful here thanks to their host plants that thrive in our gardens. Leave your laptop at home and come take a soak in the geothermal hot ponds at the end of our road. Just off the scenic Red Road one mile up from the ocean. If you love East Hawaii and eco-friendly accommodations, you'll love our off-grid location! We have maintained a 5-star review and guest favorite rating on another site, but due to the national boycott concerns we have decided to try hosting on this platform. We can provide past reviews upon request. The cabin is a single room with a queen sized bed. There is a covered outdoor minimalist kitchen that includes a refrigerator, propane camp stove, hot and cold sink, filtered bottled water and outdoor seating. Please note that we are off-grid, so there is no microwave oven. Attached to the cabin is an outdoor hot shower on one side and a private composting toilet on the other side. Solar provides electricity for the refrigerator and lamp only. There are no outlets available for high energy use such as hairdryers. Our house is approximately 200ft away with palms and mango trees growing between our house and the cabin. Electric fencing surrounds the entire driveway and building compound. It keeps our local feral pig friends from destroying our driveway and garden area. Parking is provided next to the cabin.
