We are a 5th generation family farm on the slopes of Haleakala, just a 3 mile drive up from historic Makawao town. Our great grandfather purchased a 40 acre ranch in 1957 as his retirement, homestead dream. With rolling hills of pastures, our farm is the ideal location for a secluded camping getaway with ocean views and Maui. Sadly, our property was hit severely by the August 2023 fires caused by downed electric lines. Your support of camping on our family farm helps us recover little by little and help us maintain such a huge responsibility of weeding invasive trees and weeds, along with repairs and fence building after so much loss.

Mahalo, for your interest in visiting Big Island Farms located half way between the Historic Town of Honoka'a and the beautiful Waipi'o Valley. We are a permaculture based farm that hosts students from all over the world interested in learning more about sustainability, permaculture farming, Hawaiian culture and much more. During our off season, we open up the farm for you to visit and enjoy the beautiful Aina (land) and facilities.
Your stay with us could vary, from relaxing and reading a good book on one of our many decks or hiking through our upper orchards to find the on property waterfall that runs most of the year.
Our property is 65 acres with 50 acres of Macadamia Nut orchards and free roaming sheep and cows. The lower 15 acres consist of many different gardens, a green house (please do not enter), multiple Food Forests, 8 Cabanas, 2 classrooms 4 showers, 3 composting toilets and a kitchen with common area.
Each cabana is screened in 360º with views, two bunkbeds (sleeps 4), air mattresses, (Bring your own Sleeping Bag/Pillows) shelves, clothes lines on outside and lockable doors. There is no electricity in the cabanas but there are power strips available in the common area.
The common area consists of a large deck with picnic tables, Wifi access (pw: pickalltheweeds), power strips for charging electronics, canopies for when it rains, a 2-burner hotplate for cooking, pots, pans, plates, utensils, cups, dry food storage and a full sized fridge with freezer. Please keep the area clean.
We also offer morning Breakfast Basket options:
Small basket $ - 2 Papayas, 6 bananas, 2 cups of coffee.
Large basket $ - 4 papayas, 10 bananas, morning coffee during your stay.
Please keep in mind the fruit may vary depending on what is ripe.

In order to preserve water we utilize clean non-smelling composting toilets. We also have 4 hot water showers, 2 sinks and vanity areas. Please keep showers to 5 min or less, Mahalo.
If you come with a 4-wheel drive vehicle you are welcome to drive farther up on to the property and park closer to your cabana, just follow the Parking signs. We do not recommend you drive up with cars or low vehicles as the terrain is a bit rough, instead please park down in front in one of the parking spaces.

We have a hidden exotic fruit orchard tucked away through rolling green hills, perched over the Hamakua cliffs, overlooking the pacific.
We sell our fruits ripe and cut ready to eat at our roadside fruit stand, open 10-6 daily including holidays! We serve local fresh juices and machete open coconuts to drink ice cold.
We grow mango, durian, lilikoi, star fruit, chocolate sapote, buddhas hand citrus, finger limes, tangerines and tangelos, jackfruit, tree grapes, mangosteen, white pineapples, mountain apples, berries, spices and much more. We are home to dozens of rescue animals, many who came from Puna during the 2018 lava flow. Meet peaceful sheep, lambs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese and a lovable pet pig. Not to mention our friendly farm cats.
We are a community of a few passionate farmers and fruit lovers. There’s a family- myself Rose, my partner Matthew and our daughter Mela, plus several awesome guys and girls who help out in different areas to grow our lives together!

Nice place to camp. Sheep came to visit which was nice. Swings near the fruit stand were a pleasant place to hang out. There was no trampoline to be found and there is a bit of traffic noise from the road. Overall a good stay.

Beautiful quiet site with access to a community kitchen and outlets for charging devices. The common area was covered and lighted at night which was nice and the bananas were the best I've ever had. Mattresses are not super comfy but that's to be expected. Compost toilet is kept quite clean. Daisy gave me a wonderful fruit basket before I left which was delicious!

Beautiful peaceful spot. Loved the yummy treats from the fruit stand before settling in for the evening. The porta potty provided was the cleanest we’d used in our whole 10 day trip! Had a visit from the sheep in the morning before heading out. Thanks for the stay :)

Nice private camp area behind locked gate. Careful there is a lot of broken glass as you drive past the gate towards the campsite, I cleaned up a lot but the more I cleaned up the more I found. The code to the gate was wrong on the directions - luckily there was a worker at the fruit stand that gave me the right one. Tried to get a hold of the host regarding wifi but took over a day - called twice, WhatsApp, text - she finally responded to a text. Nice place to unwind and not have anyone bother you.

Nice surroundings, quiet and felt secure. Code for entry was wrong so probably need to update that. We were able to get it from the fruit stand before close. But if we arrived later not sure what we'd do. Overall great experience.

Lovely and peaceful spot! Unfortunately we couldn’t make it before dark so had a hard time navigating to the place and within the grounds. But once we got settled we were amazed by the Milky Way view - best stars I’ve seen in a long time! The sheep gave us a very friendly greeting & we thoroughly enjoyed the fruit stand offerings. Def recommend it for a basic and peaceful camping experience!

We went in expecting exactly what the description said in hipcamp - very simple and very basic. The views were the best part - lovely westerly view for Sunset. Our last day a rainbow stretched across the whole valley below. Solitude since there is only one site was nice - we had the area to ourselves. We were traveling by campervan (Metris) and fit on the spot well. Our hostess Nina left us be and gave us the gate code ahead of time. Don't expect a "campground" - it is parking space on their family farm with chairs, a great sitting bench and a small fire pit for campfire. We also liked that our fee went to support the family farm. Very quiet and very peaceful. If this all sounds like what you are looking for then book your stay here. We stayed for our last two days in town and it was close to the airport as well.

I really love the serenity and peace here. This beautiful little private spot just out of the way was perfect. I enjoyed coming away from the days adventures to a quiet little area away from it all. The gardens that Nina have here are so cute and brings a sense of calm and beauty. The view would be incredible on a clear day the colours are just breathtaking. Its so gorgeous up there! Rose and Family were very nice and accommodating, making it very easy to find. It felt very safe and secure there. Her beautiful land and Fruit Stand were the real stars of the show!!! We woke to a deeply beautiful landscape with sheep roaming close by, who grazed pleasantly close to us during our breakfast; and afterwards we partook of her very tasty Fruit Stand!!! Definitely recommend both the chilled coconut and the fresh squeezed sugar-came and ginger juice!!!

I write this as I book this site for the third time on my Maui travels. Nina’s Hipcamp is not the cheapest on the island but I can say that the lavatory is clean and you have privacy. due to the acreage and fact that there is only one site on the property you don’t get too much noise aside from the birds and deer. You are close to a road but it isn’t traveled frequently, especially in the evenings. the host is kind and communicative, She does run a few programs on her property but they are all held around midday when I was still at the beach so it was never an issue for me.

We booked a last minute reservation for one night in a minivan before heading to Haleakala National Park early next morning. The simple site was perfect for our needs - There was a porta potty and hose. Make sure to park near the concrete barn on the left. We arrived at night and mistakenly went down a steep driveway to the right and had trouble driving back up. Otherwise, the property is nice and easy to find!
