Resting next to the Cucharas River, the flat meadow is perfect for parking your RV while you enjoy views of the surrounding mountain range. You are under a five minute drive to Cuchara Main Street and just over a ten minute drive to the quaint town of La Veta. Fishing is available at many of the nearby lakes including Bear Lake, Blue Lake, North Lake, Monument Lake, Daigre Lake, and Wahatoya Lake. Many hiking and biking trails are also in the area. Or you can visit Lathrop State Park in Walsenburg just over 30 minutes away where you can paddle board, hike, or fish. The Great Sand Dunes National Park is just one hour from this location! It is a perfect central parking spot for all of your Southern Colorado outdoor adventures while coming home to peace and serenity. The eastern boundary of this property is the Cucharas River and we own to the center point of the river. We ask that you stay within the boundaries shown on the map. Reservations up to five days max, we may allow an extended stay upon request. We do not offer any restrooms so we require you must have an RV with your own facilities. No fires permitted on property. My wife and I were drawn to the beauty of the San Luis Valley with it’s rich Native American, Spanish and early American History. This valley is also the World’s largest Alpine Valley with the Sangre de Cristo mountain range on the east and the San Juan mountains to the West. Truly beautiful countryside. Our 5 acre parcel is within a 56,160 acre rural subdivision that the Forbes family sold back in the 1970’s. Our parcel is at 8,800 elevation.

Pitch your tent underneath Ponderosas or among century old Piñon pines. Great view of Snow capped Mount Blanca to the Northeast all at 8,750 above sea level. There’s a peaceful, quiet, private sense of being on the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
The San Luis Valley is also visible below and beyond to the West. Amazing night sky views, you'll feel like you are the only humans enjoying the setting. There are approximately 5000 acres of nearby greenbelt with forest, hills, valleys and alpine meadows for hiking and exploring up the road. I can send you coordinates and maps, or you can easily view on the "On X Offroad" GPS app.
The area is secluded and primitive as current status. You will see a double gated entry with posts. The newly made driveway leads down the hill to a cleared area where you can park your vehicle. We will provide GPS coordinates to your reserved campsite as well as the entry gate lock combination. We recommend using "On X Offroad" GPS app, it works better than Google Maps. There is ample distance between each campsite and plenty of trees to hang hammocks or suspended tree tents.

This is a lovely spot that we had all to our selves. We parked our trailer near the river and could listen to it all night long. This was a convenient location to both Curchara (2 miles) and La Veta (9 miles), plus all of the hiking trails and lakes in the surrounding national forest. I'm sure we will be coming back.

Beautiful and spacious site. It is close to the highway making access easy, especially if you have a large rig (we camped with a 28’ fifth wheel and 16’ trailer and had PLENTY of space). River runs next to site. Trees and brush surrounding, making it private with great views. Close to La Veta and Cuchara. Cows might greet you from the neighboring pasture!

This was our second stay at Lone Spruce Camp, and it’s quickly becoming our favorite Colorado getaway! The camp is easy to access with plenty of level spots to set up, and the views are absolutely breathtaking. The host is extremely kind and helpful, which makes the experience even better. We highly recommend staying here and can’t wait to come back again!

The Lone Spruce was hands-down one of the easiest Hipcamp sites we’ve ever found—great layout, spotless, and super welcoming. The host was amazing (I’m still not convinced she didn’t secretly train the wildlife to show up on cue just for our review).
Night one: my wife and I are sitting down to dinner when I glance out the camper window and—casual as can be—a bear strolls by on the other side of the river. Later that evening, while enjoying a gorgeous sunset, two giant bucks wandered through the site like they were auditioning for a nature documentary. Not to be outdone, the second night a parade of turkeys marched across the river as if they were in on the whole thing.
We left with full bellies, full camera rolls, and full hearts. The Lone Spruce isn’t just a campsite—it’s a front-row ticket to the wildlife channel, minus the commercials. We’ll definitely be back, and if you’re lucky, maybe the host will “release the animals” on schedule for you too. Highly recommended!

This spot is so beautiful! It is on the river, sleeping with the windows open listening to the water was incredibly relaxing. The owners were very friendly and responsive. We were there on the 4th of July and we had the place to ourselves. The highway of legends, on which the site is, is a journey everyone should take!

This is a beautiful spot! Really an amazing place to basecamp. Churaha is an amazing community. La Veta is also an oasis. I had no idea such an amazing place existed. We were right next to the Churaha river and had the whole place to our selves. Wow!!!
