Whaleback Ridge Campgrounds

10 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents34 acres · Calistoga, CA
Welcome! We offer 4 options on our land, just 10 minutes from beautiful Calistoga, mud baths, the community pool ($8) and of course the restaurant and fun bar scene. I teach at SF State, and spend my summer vacations visiting our family land and running hipcamp, amidst various travel plans. I am proud of our little camp for being an affordable option in Calistoga with gorgeous views and peaceful nature settings. Whaleback Ridge has 3 main sites that overlook “the Whaleback”, named by my great-great grandparents who settled here 100 years ago. The top of the Whaleback is the far edge of our 34-acre property, and is accessible by trails (hiking map will be sent to you upon booking). The lower, private sites, overlooking this ridgeline through the trees, are called the Shaded Oak and the Married Manzanitas - both are very rustic and outdoorsy. The upper site, Coral Cabin, shares the hilltop with the main house and shared Camp Station, but is the most accessible. The Married Manzanitas site has both a fully stocked cabin ($98) and designated site to pitch a tent ($49) - bring your own or rent one here for $10 extra. Either option will have the entire Married Manzanitas common area and shower to themselves - both won't be rented simultaneously unless you have a larger group. The two lower sites are very private and secluded, but share access to the "Hilltop 360 View Station" where you can find the outdoor kitchen (with appliances available to use in the shed), electrical outlets, WiFi (most of the time), a NEWLY REBUILT shower/tub combo, and a propane grill or campstove for cooking, as well as plates, utensils, spices, etc. *Note: over the last two years, we've made many changes and upgrades. See most recent pictures towards the top, and in the Site Descriptions, for the most accurate idea of what we offer. AVAILABLE SITES: 1. Shaded Oak: small RV/trailer accessible, this is a back-in site for RVs - cars have a 3- or 4-point 'turnaround' by the Keep Going sign (mind the trees), or can pull in and back out. There is also one designated flat spot for tents, but easily 1-2 more flat spots, including the flat spot to park RVs, trailers, cars, etc. *For trailers, the back-in is slightly challenging; we recommend you drive to the top of the driveway (the Hilltop 360 View Station where the main house is), and turn around for easier maneuvering. This site has a table, chairs, garbage can with bags, dish soap and a 5 gallon water jug for a "handwashing" station (this is well water, not harmful to drink but not "spring" water). When Married Manzanitas is vacant, you have the option of the more private, lower shower in the Married Manzanitas site (Dan will let you know if that site is vacant); otherwise your shower is available at the Hilltop 360 View station). All sites have their own compost toilet and garbage bin that require special attention - for more info, see Site description or the Info Doc I will send upon booking. 2. Married Manzanitas Camping Site: tent or open star camping only. Married Manzanitas Tent Cabin: fully stocked, ready to sleep in (you may have to put fresh sheets provided in a tote in the cabin). Whichever option you choose, both have primarily walk-in access to the site (about 40 yards). Driving in with 4WD or high clearance vehicles is definitely do-able, and optional, at your own risk of scratches. You'll have a large table, chairs, flat spot for tent with a tarp available, your own compost toilet "throne" (see details in Site Description/Info Doc). This site has a dishwashing and handwashing station using a 5-gallon jug that can be refilled at the Hilltop Station (if you use it all), as well as utensils, dishes, and a small one-burner camp stove available in drawers under the sink. *There is a private, heated shower at this site marked by the red shade cloths, and is exclusive to Married Manzanitas campers when rented. This shower is fed by a hose - You might need to walk to the hilltop station to turn on the hose, if you use it more than once. Also, you may want to turn OFF the gas at this shower at first, since the water in the hose gets naturally heated by the sun. Note: The Married Manzanitas site is the only one that doesn't accommodate a trailer or RV, since it is walk-in, 2WD vehicles with some clearance, or 4WD accessible. 3. CORAL CABIN: Our second lodging option, at the hilltop, which is the most accessible but least private (although you will likely not run into anyone from the main house, and if you do, they are very friendly!). This cabin is fully stocked with clean sheets, a TV with Roku, wifi, and electrical outlet. It also has a portable AC unit which works well in the heat after warming up. Just outside, 20 yards away, is the main Hilltop 360 station with all the amenities; you may meet your neighboring campers here, but you also have lots of lounging area near the cabin that is exclusive to your party. *For a larger group, you can simply add people at booking for $10 per person, and they can pitch a tent on the hilltop near the cabin (a small tent is available to rent if needed), use the amenities, etc. SHARED: Hilltop 360 View Station is across from the main yellow house at the top of the hill, between the house and the Coral Cabin. When you reach the hilltop, stay left towards the Welcome sign and small yellow shed. Behind the yellow shed, you will find shared access to electricity, a sink, our newly rebuilt shower/tub combo (see pics), the other larger outdoor tub, propane grill, and campstove; inside the shed you'll find the microwave, mini-fridge, coffee maker, utensils and dishes, and lots of games! The Shared Kitchen is outside, however many of the supplies and appliances (coffee machine, microwave, toaster, mini-fridge with freezer) are inside the shed. Use the appliances inside, then take any dishes, utensils, pots and pans, etc. to the stainless steel counter with sink. Please wash and return anything you use back to the shed (or leaving them in the drying rack is fine). There is also a treehouse deck (made from recycled redwood from our old deck) and a swing:) *Please note: much of our hipcamp is made of recycled redwood from when I rebuilt our deck, and leftovers from other big projects (like concrete fiber siding), and/or supplies from Dan and Mariah's wedding - and we're proud to be recycling these materials into new projects for the hipcamp (like the treehouse, some of the shower), so that you can enjoy the scenery and serenity of our land. OTHER GUIDELINES: *Everyone is welcome to drive or walk to the Hilltop, where the main house is; just don't knock on the door or disturb the family living there. Dan is sometimes. on site, but always available by text for questions or troubleshooting any issues. Park anywhere between the yellow shed and Coral Cabin, near the water tank. For hiking, keep walking past the white cabin to access the main hiking trail to the Whaleback Ridge (past the compost toilet, look out for the first left to access the main fire road to the Whaleback (map will be sent to you in a google doc). *You may not need the Hilltop Station if you're using the lower shower and/or self-contained in your RV, but it is there if you would like to use it. *Feel free to wash/rinse any dishes you want to use FIRST, as dust, etc. is likely to accumulate up here. *After use, please clean, dry and return anything you used to avoid a $10 cleaning fee. *Both bathtubs are available for soaking, for an extra $10 per stay (add 'Extra' at booking or contact Dan if you decide to use it later). *Other Extras available at booking (or contact Dan if you're already camping): bicycles ($10 each per stay); kayak and all gear/2 life vests ($15); tennis rackets/balls for court in town ($10 per day for all); 2-4 person tent ($10). Games are free to use - please replace as you found them. *We have an old dog! She is a husky-akida mix (her name is "Beautiful") and she will bark at first. She makes friends quickly; feel free to meet her and show you're friendly, then ignore her and/or play with her! But please don't feed her human food, and watch your food (!). If you bring pets, they should be fine! If yours is at all questionable with new dogs, please just introduce them slowly at first, and then they should get along famously. Throwing a toy or stick should work, or if available, give her a dog treat. *In emergencies or stuck cars, our tenant/host at the main house can usually help with his truck - after work hours - for a $15 emergency help fee if he's available, and has graciously done so before. But remember, Dan is the main point of contact by text. If you need WIFI to send a text, you can connect at the Hilltop 360 View Station. Wifi Info is on the google doc that I will send to your phone or email upon booking; I recommend downloading the doc to your phone in case you don't have service:) *For hiking, you can explore most all parts of the property NORTH of the driveway/camps. You can get to "The Whaleback" most easily by walking to the "Hilltop 360 View Station" and walking left, past the white Coral Cabin, about 25 yards then taking your FIRST left trail and following the main trails which will cover the edges of our 34 acres, about 30-45 min. hike to the top of the ridge. If you reach the small pond, you've gone too far past the FIRST left trail. The other way to access this trail is through our "Fern Gully", which is Northeast of the Shaded Oak and/or Whaleback View Cabin (past the compost toilet and then 'right,' down the wash will get you to our dried up streambed, then right again following the streambed will eventually get you to the main trail). These trails are tame enough, but at spots they do get overgrown, and it is wilderness. -rattlesnakes, ticks, and poison oak - long pants and hiking boots recommended. *Steer clear of the neighbors down the hill - the first house you see when you drive up the driveway. They are my cousins, and not part of hipcamp. Please do not approach the lower house or invade their privacy. *This is a beautiful, serene, and peaceful spot! We invite you to come contribute to that energy.

Heartwood Mendocino

9 sites · Lodging40 acres · Mendocino, CA
Our property is just minutes from Mendocino's beaches, parks and sweet town, yet private and quiet as it is surrounded by 50,000 acre state forest with world class hiking and biking trails directly accessed from our place.  Around the giant redwoods and meadows we have sprinkled in the most amazing little cabins and deluxe bath house. We have a great outdoor camp kitchen available for your use. This is a very special experience for us to share with you.  We are a family of campers. We agree, there's nothing better than a rest in a hammock following a hike and a river swim and a night under the stars without the constant dinging of cell and internet!  Guests love staying here: "Such a lovely getaway! Our family of four and little dog thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Heartwood. The cabins are great, with comfortable (warm) beds, very clean and cozy. It’s well worth the visit even in the winter! Really appreciated being outdoors surrounded by Redwoods, hiking the trails around the property, the modern bathrooms with hot showers, and the indoor sitting area to make coffee in the mornings. Our stay was relaxing, memorable and special!"

Old Mill Farm

1 site · Lodging300 acres · Mendocino, CA
This magical place is far out there! We are providing a setting for those adventurers who want a place to REALLY "get away from it all." Expect a beautiful 30 minute drive on gravel roads through mature Redwood forest from the village of Mendocino. The property is also accessible from Fort Bragg via HWY 20 and road 408/Little Lake Rd. The Aloha Cabin is a beautiful one room timber frame cabin located on a ridge top in the Redwood forest. Upon entering the gate at Old Mill Farm the Aloha Cabin is the first building you see as you come out of the thick forest and into the mixed meadow/forest ridge top of the property. Old Mill Farm is a 320 ranch in the middle of Mendocino county's 50,000 acre JDSF (Jackson State Demonstration Forest.) The Aloha sits by itself about a 1/2 mile from the rest of the ranch buildings and like the entire ranch is completely off-grid. Electricity is provided by a solar photovoltaic system and battery back up. All water is pumped with solar power and gravity fed throughout the property. You will be imbedded in the outdoors with ample opportunity to commune with the forest and the wildlife that live there. The Aloha has a kitchen equipped for cooking with refrigerator, range and oven. There is a bathroom with a flush toilet and a private outdoor shower. We provide linens and bedding for the full size bed and towels for 4 guests. There is also a sleeping loft (with no bedding included but can be added as an extra.) Please bring your own pads and sleeping bags to use the loft or pitch a tent in the front yard. The front yard is fenced and has a fire pit. Always be fire conscious - never burn outside of the fire pit and extinguish all fires before leaving or bed. You are free to relax in the natural beauty of this place, meditate while walking our earthen labyrinth or hike around the property along the ridge and on the logging roads that descend on each side. Please respect all signs and private residents. JDSF has extensive hiking and mountain bike trails accessible right from the cabin or a short drive away. The breathtaking Mendocino Coast offers an abundance of activities from the forest to the ocean headlands and beaches.

Many Moons Homestead

3 sites · Lodging2 acres · Albion, CA
Situated on 1.5 acres, the old farmhouse, where our family lives is said to be one of the very oldest houses in Albion... built in 1865! When we got the place in 2018, it was in pretty bad disrepair and the land was a a jungle of brambles, holly bush, and tons of buried trash. Pregnant and feeling brave (also very naive), we dug into loving up the land and home. Here we are, nearly 6 years later, with a sweet little dude climbing the old plum tree, a babe in arms, a secret garden filled with all kinds of wild and cultivated edible and medicinal plants to enjoy. It makes our hearts really happy to care for this land and we love to share it with folks looking to slow down and connect with this beautiful place we get to call home. We view ourselves as just the current stewards of this beautiful place. This was home to the flora and fauna for hundreds of thousands of years before people, then home to the Pomo people for many generations, then a slew of immigrants and homesteaders, and now us. As our motto goes, This land, home, trees, and forest animals have been here for many moons before us; it's our greatest hope to be worthy stewards to ensure its health and vitality for many more.

Windy Hollow Farm is an off-the-grid farmstead located on the Mendocino Coast in California. We are 3 generations of family tending 20 acres of coastal prairie. Bryce, Ben, and Jennifer will all be around as your hosts. Through much trial and error we have been shaping this piece of land into a place to raise children, cultivate organic food and flower gardens, and host guests. Staying on the farm for a weekend, or a week, offers a glimpse into farmstead living. We have two small hand-built sleeping cabins available for guests. The cabins are cozy and rustic with woodstoves, composting toilets, and shared outdoor shower. A separate kitchen cabin is available for cooking simple meals. Visitors have access to the gardens, greenhouse and trails.

Oz Farm

77 sites · Lodging230 acres · Point Arena, CA
Originally purchased in the late 60's by "Redwood and Savatri", Oz Farm was initially a commune of sorts and is no doubt a very special place...heck, its even got it's own comic book! Here you can pick your poison, as the property is comprised of 7 rustic cabins, redwood campsites, and geodesic domes that would make Buckminster Fuller proud. The working farm is comprised of over 230 accessible acres of flowing meadows, redwood groves, prime agriculture, and is intersected by the beautiful Garcia River, which flows into the mighty pacific. One thing that is very apparent, is how clearly passionate the community at Oz Farm is about ecology and agriculture. Once you step foot onto Oz Farm, you'll begin to understand why.The property is open seasonally and frequently rented by full-camp retreats and events throughout the summer. Individual cabins open to rent one month in advance and are advertised through instagram @villageozfarm
