This small Tasmanian valley town offers campers access to mountain parks, trails, and campsites.
The former silver-mining boom town of Zeehan occupies a privileged position in western Tasmania, at the bottom of a rainforest-covered valley and surrounded by national and regional parks. The Mount Heemskirk, Mount Dundas, and Parting Creek regional reserves are all within easy reach of Zeehan, as are the spectacular Montezuma Falls and various hiking, four-wheel-drive, and mountain biking trails. Nearby, campers can stay at peaceful camping and glamping spots surrounded by bush and mountains. Many Zeehan-area campsites are off-grid with simple, back-to-basics facilities. Although Zeehan itself isn’t on the coast, it’s only a half-hour drive from Trial Harbour, a rugged, rural beach town with more great camping. Around 40% of Tasmania is preserved as national park land, and you’ll really feel this around Zeehan, which is far from major Tasmanian cities—ideal for nature-loving campers.
