A rural idyll in the Preseli Hills with shepherd’s huts and spacious camping pitches, each with a private toilet

Cardigan Bay, St Bride’s or Barafundle Beach? Deciding which stretch of the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline to head for can be a real headscratcher. But hang on a second; we’ve got another idea. Pick somewhere in the Preseli Hills and you’ll have all of them within a short drive. Not only that, but you’ll also get to experience Pembrokeshire’s other treasures: its ancient woodlands, neolithic standing stones and moorland hills. Choose Brynhaul Camping and Shepherd’s Huts, specifically, and you’ll also get an authentic Welsh experience that you’d be hard pushed to find on the coast.

Brynhaul is on the edge of Maenclochog village and looks across fields to the very highest point in the Preselis, Foel Cwm Cerwyn. If you struggle to find the campsite, just stop at the village café, shop or pub and ask for Elfrys and Steve. You’ll be pointed in the right direction before you’re bid a fond hwyl fawr. Welsh is the first language here and the people are proud; none more so than Elfrys and Steve whose enthusiasm for this land is infectious. They say that a lifetime in Pembrokeshire doesn’t stop you being regularly blown away by its beauty.

Staying at Brynhaul gives you a chance for that too. There are two shepherd’s huts and 13 spacious pitches. The huts offer everything that’s needed for comfortable cooking, eating and sleeping. They are insulated, cosy and open all year and a great place to stay for glampers, out-of-season campers or people adventuring by bike or on foot. All you need to bring is food and, if you’ve booked The Hedgerow Hut, your swimming kit as there’s a muscle-soothing hot tub too.

Over in the camping field, things are more back-to-basics but pitches do come with some practical bells on. Each has a campfire pit, a picnic table, its own compost loo and a tippy-tap sink (you’ll see). There are hot water showers and undercover washing-up sinks that are shared along with the best amenity; the field itself. It’s a hedgerowed, clover covered six acres with views to the hills. It’s bathed in sun when it shines and often blessed with the kind of sunset and stars that can make a camping trip. All this is just 500 yards from the edge of the national park, 15 minutes’ walk from the village, two miles from the top of the Preselis and 10 miles from the closest North Coast beach. It’s a rural idyll at the heart of Pembrokeshire, with Pembrokeshire at it’s heart.

The Area Pembrokeshire is an outdoor instructor’s playground, with Canoeing, sailing, hiking, Climbing, Kayaking and coasteering to mention a few. Just 2 miles away, is our stunning backdrop, Foel Cwm Cerwyn, the highest peak in the Preseli hills, or indeed Pembrokeshire. From here (Brynhaul) you enjoy panoramic views of the Preseli hills and the rural landscape of Pembrokeshire (with no neighbours). While you take in the beauty and quiet, the children can explore the hedges for blackberries, hazel and litchens. We provide a car free environment (other than set up and take down) so playing is safe. If they join one of our bushcraft courses, they might be the ones cooking your bbq or lighting the fire pit! For us, the priceless part is star gazing and sunsets – it is so dark here you really feel the stars are in touching distance and we could photograph probably 200 sunsets a year! We run Brynhaul as green as we can, the site is off grid, but with modern compost loos and pleasant gas heated showers. Much of our power is solar and we recycle just about everything. Oakwood, folly farm, Manor park.  Play park in the village.  Canoe trips on the Teifi river, kid friendly Kayaking or stand  up paddle boarding in Fishguard. Loads of castles. Welsh wildlife centre. For Free Tons of beaches that are great on any day, that includes swimming, rockpooling, diverting streams and making the biggest sand castle or sculpture ever! Blackberry, hazel and sloe picking. Blowing dandelion clocks.  These hills are fantastic for walking with a family, short walks and full days out - our kids were up there before they could walk!! Teach them how to read a map (or learn yourself!!). DIY bush craft (start with chopping kindling for the BBQ or fire pit). Llys y Fran lake park. Scolton manor park (park is free but museum is paid for). Nearby amenities Brynhaul is situated on the edge (like 500 yards) of the wonderful Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park. Walking distance is the quiet village of Maenclochog, which has grocery shops, garage, café a country pub and 2 artists galleries. The next village is Rosebush, with a fairly unique, grade 2 listed, community pub/restaurant, Pantmaenog forest for walking and cycling, a cheese farm, old slate quarries and a hidden lake. Llys y Fran Lake Country Park, with its walks, cycling, excellent fishing and soon to open adventure centre is only 3 miles away. The stunning glaciated Gwaun Valley, where Bessie of, Dyffryn Arms, still serves beer from a jug is about 5 miles, in fact we are centrally located for all of Pembrokeshire’s 186 miles of beautiful beaches, coastline, villages and attractions.

Shepherd's hut · Sleeps 4
Our bespoke  ‘Skylark Hut’ is ready for your holiday now! We have placed her right on the edge of the field for you, so you can sit at the breakfast bar while you gaze into Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and watch the occasional fox wandering over the field as a red Kite circles, checking out a possible snack, and the swallows swoop and feast on bugs as you look over to the highest point in the Preseli Mountains (hills really but mountains to us!). Your kitchen is well fitted and thought out, you can bake it, boil it, BBQ it, grill it, chill it, fry it, or even microwave it!! All you need to do is bring your choice of food and drinks. Or dine Al-fresco around the BBQ /fire pit. There is a double bed that rises out of the way in the day time, giving you a snug dining area underneath and the 2 sofas double up as single beds with storage under them. There is something nice about snuggling up in a warm bed, after a day exploring and being so close to nature. Skylark Hut also has a comfortable en suite bathroom. Skylark Hut is well positioned for exploring hills and coastlines, from the comfort and coziness of a well thought out home from home that is yours for the duration of your holiday. Welcome to Brynhaul Clover Fields Camping and Shepherds Huts, we are part of the Greener Camping Club. You will find tranquil, off grid, clover field camping, nestled by ferny hedgerows and two lovingly crafted Shepherds huts. Our clover field camping is brand new, however our Shepherds huts are little more established, with many very happy customers. We are set in the rolling hillside of the Preseli Hills, enjoying panoramic views of the hills and down to the coast, with less than 2 miles to Pembrokeshire's highest point. Brynhaul is a haven of wildlife with pheasants, foxes and badgers regularly visiting the fields and kites, buzzards, geese, mistle thrush and peregrines seen overhead. Walking or cycling from the doorstep gives you a good choice of lanes or offbeat tracks and paths. A gentle drive reaches all of our stunning Pembrokeshire National Park coastline, and easy access to the richness of the whole county, be it coast or castles, ancient burial chambers and bluestones, cycling or fishing. Each of our 13 pitches are complete with your own waterless loo, a large bench table and a fire pit suitable for barbecuing on or chilling by.
Nearby attractions

Situated just outside the Pembrokeshire National Park with the Preseli Hills on the doorstep, there is plenty of great walking, hiking and biking. The highest point in the Preselis, Foel Cwm Cerwyn, is just two miles from site if you fancy trekking up to it though Steve and Elfrys recommend other circular routes from the site. A short drive away (about six miles) there’s lovely woodland walking in the Gwaun Valley. Llys y Frân Country Park and Reservoir (01437 532 273) has yet more walking routes as well as bike trails and opportunities for watersports. There’s plenty more of that on the Pembrokeshire coast with surfing, paddleboarding, kayaking, coasteering and more all available. Kayak-King (07967 010203) in Fishguard is a good place to start for a sea adventure. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches and coast; Cardigan Bay is to the north, St David’s Peninsula to the west and Barafundle Bay to the south. For anyone interested in history, the reconstructed Iron Age village at Castell Henllys (01239 891319), 11 miles away, is fascinating. With guides in character and plenty of activities, it’s especially good for kids. There are also standing stones near the site, Steve and Elfrys can tell you where and recommend Pentre Ifan, nine miles away, as a nice spot to watch the sunset.

Food and drink

A 15-minute walk away in the village of Maenclochog is Cafe y Sgar (01437 532078), which is recommended by your hosts. The village also has a drinks-only pub, The Globe (01437 532269), and a village shop which is stocked with local produce including fresh bread, meat and Gethins Cyder, which is made in the village. For a pub that does food, head for the quirky, community-owned Tafarn Sinc (01437 532214) two miles away in Rosebush. The Cross Inn in Clarbeston Road (seven mile from Brynhaul) is another good option that’s recommended and for a truly local brew, join a tour and tasting at The Bluestone Brewery (01239 820 833), eight miles away.
