Where the moors meet the sea – Location is what it is all about with the Exmoor shepherd huts. If you enjoy wildlife, walking, birdwatching, swimming in the sea, browsing through quirky craft shops, a fine meal in the local restaurant or a meal cooked by yourselves over the fire pit then this is the place for you. A stunning setting you are unlikely to find anywhere else. There are two different shepherd’s huts on the farm, each with its own private space and equipped with personal facilities, so you feel like the only guests around. The huts have specifically been placed so that they are not visible from one another. Sea view hut is the closest to the house and ‘civilisation’ It has full electricity with a fridge, kettle, George Forman grill, a fan if needed, and the option to hire a large paddling pool for those balmy days. It has a comfortable double bed and a small single. Good wifi and you can park your car right outside. Sunset hut is the most remote and arguably the most beautiful. It is completely off grid and has a solar powered lights and small fridge, although the romantic flickering of candlelight has to be preferred. It has a super comfy king sized bed. It is in a field away from the farm and enjoys the most spectacular sunsets and a sea view. Weather permitting the car can be parked right outside. Both huts are well equipped for glamping – they have outside and inside table and chairs, Pots and pans and tea and coffee making facilities for your morning cup around the campfire – but the style is in keeping with the huts’ humble origin. There are no slim TVs or DVD players – The showers are gas fired and loos are eco friendly, and although there is good mobile reception it is hoped that you won’t feel the need to use them. Both huts have beautiful sea and moor views and an abundance of birds and wildlife. Listen out for the roar of the stags and the whinnying of the wild Exmoor ponies. The huts are within the national park and you can walk straight out onto the moors and not see another person or you can walk down the hill to the nearest pub. After all, a visit to the inn after a few days in your hut is exactly what the shepherds of old would have done, isn't it?

It’s less than half an hour to ‘the city of dreaming spires’, where you can roam around the various Oxfordcolleges and quads, admiring the architecture. Punting(01865 515978) is a great option on sunny days; relaxing in a good book or coffee shop is a good choice on rainy ones. Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon is around the same distance – worth a visit not just for the theatres and Shakespeare-centred history, but also as an attractive little town in its own right. Just beyond, Warwick is particularly popular for its well-kept Norman castle (08712 652000) – family activities run throughout school holidays. It’s also 40 minutes to Blenheim Palace (01993 810500), a monumental 18th-century house in Woodstock and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Closer to home, enjoy walks directly from the campsite. There are several local footpaths along the riverside, while long distance routes – the Jurassic Way, Millennium Way and Battlefield Trail – are also accessible.

Picnic hampers can be supplied with advanced notice and a butchers van, with free-range meat and fresh vegetables, comes to the farmyard every Saturday morning. The Griffin (01295 660311) in Chipping Warden is within easy walking distance (dog-friendly and serving hearty pub food) or, if you want to really treat yourself, the renowned Butchers Arms (01327 260504) at Priors Hardwick is only a 15-minute drive. Other top pubs for within 5–10 minutes drive are The Red Lion (01295 760050) at Culworth, The George and Dragon (01295 711500) at Chacombe, The Three Conies (01295 711025) at Thorpe Mandeville and The Red Lion (01327 261200) at Hellidon.
