If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see at least one of the amazing sunsets at Red Sky at Night Campsite near Monmouth – but if you don’t, there’s mighty compensation in the shape of the spectacular views from just about everywhere on the site. And of course, on clear nights, the night skies are diamond-bright with stars - we are under one of Wales' Dark Sky Reserves! This family-run camping field on a livestock farm is managed on very laidback lines. Pitch up wherever you like and feel free to park by your tent (weather permitting). Raised campfires are allowed and you can hire firepits and grills (the owners sell local eggs & sausages) and buy bags of wood & kindling. You can bring your dogs too (take them for walks in the adjoining woods) but just be sure to keep them on a lead. Kids are certainly carefully looked after here. Get a fact sheet on arrival and join mini-campers in wildlife hunts through the trees, looking out all the while for buzzards and red kites. Round and about the site, your offspring can entertain themselves on rope swings, making dens and following a mini-tractor course across the camping field. There’s also a football pitch. Wild camping this may be (there’s no electricity on site, please note) but there are two nicely designed compost loos and a covered sink areas with fresh water tap. So bring your guitar, light that fire, break out the barbecue and enjoy the chilled vibe.

Off the beaten track on top of the Mendips in an area of outstanding natural beauty. A mixture of four acres of wild woodland, orchard and field set on a hillside. Our Yurt is set up in the trees giving you peaceful seclusion and a clear view across the sea to Wales and the mountains of the Brecon Beacons. A huge range of activities are possible or you can lie in the hammock with a good book. We have very friendly dogs and rescue chickens who may come and visit. Wild deer wander past in the early morning mist and the odd buzzard picks an argument with a bunch of crows but nothing much else should disturb you. We moved here after an 18 month search 8 years ago. It was close to everything we wanted and we've spent some time getting a bit closer.

Wake up to sea air, wide open skies and the sound of nature at this peaceful, wild-style campsite on the North Devon coast. Set on an organic working farm, each spacious field has no more than six pitches, giving you plenty of room to relax, explore and enjoy the incredible coastal views. Campfires are very much part of the experience. We provide raised firepits to borrow, with logs available to buy on site, making evenings perfect for stargazing, sharing stories and unwinding together around the fire. The campsite is located just outside the small hamlet of Martinhoe, with direct access to the South West Coast Path for spectacular coastal walks straight from your pitch. A historic Roman beacon sits nearby, and the surrounding farmland is rich in wildlife — deer are often spotted in neighbouring fields, alongside birds of prey and songbirds. Facilities are simple and low-impact, with a compost toilet and a water point provided. There is no electricity, no showers and no Wi-Fi — a delightfully off-grid setting designed for those who value peace, space and time outdoors. The best great views campsites near Abergavenny guide

Where to go

Black Mountains

The Black Mountains prop up the eastern end of Brecon Beacons National Park, a dark, brooding wedge of hills running from Abergavenny to Hay-on-Wye. The long-distance Offa’s Dyke Path trundles across the range, but hiking opportunities are limitless. The main way in for campers is the Vale of Ewyas, with its Abergavenny-Hay-on-Wye road bisecting some remote countryside below the ridges. Sites here are typically simple and small-scale.

Eastern Brecon Beacons

The Brecon Beacons is a national park of four parts. The eastern part of the Brecon Beacons themselves slot in west of the Black Mountains, south of Brecon and north of Merthyr Tydfil. It is the park’s most-visited area, with the highest peak (Pen y Fan, 2907 feet) and easy access from bigger towns such as Abergavenny, at the southeast corner. Campsites in this rugged expanse are in the verdant valleys around the edge and usually family-oriented.

Usk Valley

The sinuous River Usk threads through winsome, much-overlooked countryside south of Abergavenny. This is a green, gently-rolling land with the Brecon Beacons National Park’s bigger summits still looming in the background. There is delightful hiking, including on the long-distance Usk Valley Walk between Brecon and Caerleon, site of some impressive Roman ruins. Wood-fringed riverside campsites are conveniently positioned near the region’s midriff and area pubs.

When to go

Abergavenny is fabled for its festivals, so it’s worth planning a trip around them: Abergavenny Food Festival is the annual showpiece, in September. Crickhowell, just north, also has a walking festival in March. Weather is notoriously capricious here, and April and September can offer the same dry sunny spells that the height of summer can—and the same seemingly never-ending rain too—only without summer’s crowds.
